One of the nicest things about my job is getting to meet and talk with fascinating researchers from literally all over the world.
Just got off the phone with a charming old English gentleman, a historian, who now lives and workds in Alexandria, Virginia.
He writes specifically on naval history and has also written about the Lincoln assassination. A very nice, polite, learned, funny, and interesting man.
Somehow the conversation turned to WWII and he mentioned he had fought in the Battle of Britain--as an 18 year old--first as a navigator, later a pilot.
These RAF fellas had life spans that literally were measured in weeks.
It was fascinating and touching talking with a man who was one of those who helped turn back the rolling Nazi juggernaut during some of the darkest days of the war.
In the words of Churchill--
Never have so many owed so much to so few.
He is planning on visiting our library soon. I look forward to an opportunity to shake his hand.
