Has anyone else noticed the great (for us) number of lurkers on the board lately?
Be nice if some of them would sign up and post. :)

That's just warrior screwing with a library's computers.

Do you mean lurkers like this individual, who is accumulating identities for future activities? (And all with the same IP Address, no less?)

They all signed up over the past few days, during the exact timeframe that another notorious troll was busy doing the troll thing.
Give us a day or two, we'll get them cleaned out of the system.

Do you mean lurkers like this individual, who is accumulating identities for future activities? (And all with the same IP Address, no less?)No, I mean having 150 or 200 guests who aren't members. We used to hardly ever have more than 40 or so.
Probably Evakian has it right.
Since you brought it up, though, I am curious about something. I thought Borg put an auto-ban on warrior's IP. Is that in effect or not? The reason I ask is that when nighthawk showed up I thought you said she was using the same IP as warrior.

I think we should close off all the bases to guests (Except Introductions and Feedback) (So it says 'PRIVATE' and they cant view anything w/o being logged in)

I disagree, Dude. If we don't allow new people to at least read the posts in different threads how will they know if they like the site or not? I joined another site where newcomers were basically in purgatory for the first week or so before they could post on anything but the introduction board. Most people got fed up and left before finalizing their membership.
Perhaps we should have a heirarchy of membership. When you begin you can respond to posts but not start new threads, or something like that but I would hate to not allow people to read the threads.

The first part of your post I agree with Frogger. A forum never grows unless people can see what they are getting themselves into. And once that happens certain death follows.
The second part... well... here come the rules... Just the word hierarchy makes me shudder. Another certain death move. Let's not go there.

But,heres an idea instead of making it so they can't post a new thread.......they have to post a picture of themselves in their underwear...........hmmmmmm.......

Not a good idea. A woman I worked with told the story about how her husband didn't wear underwear and he zipped up too fast one time and really hurt himself. I don't know what's worse, the fact that some guy managed to hurt himself or that his wife went and blabbed about it, dammit.

I think it's alot different with a woman not wearing undies than a man.
Accidents happen, but I'd say the fact that she went around and blabbed about it is far worse.

Imp, you are as wise as you are beautiful;
I myself wear a similar dress, and never once have I zipped my wiener into a painful state while wearing that garment.
It's simple math really. If A = B and B = C, then it only follows that the square of the hypotenuse equals the sum of the zipper-gristle.
Thanks for elucidating that for the rest of the great unwashed masses, you brilliant minx!

Sorry about the mistaken identity, it's just that Sal isn't a common girl's name. My girlfriend's kid had a male friend named Sal who spent way too much time hanging around my house, yuck. So, I just assumed, dammit.
If it makes you feel better, some guy tried to pick me up on a chatroom. He thought I was a girl. Does "shocklance" sound feminine to you? "He" started by saying how long I wanted to be single, I was thinking this is rather bold for a girl. I replied "not long." He then launches into a spiel about his blue eyes and how big his muscles are. I'm thinking "uh oh." So, I type in "hey, I'm a guy."
Dead silence for about 15 seconds, then he said
WHAT!!
I replied, "I'm a guy there dude, what made you think I was female?" I mean, I had a profile clearly stating I was male. He left, real quick. Of course, I had to go back to the main chatroom and tell the story. I wasn't going mention the guy's NAME or anything, I was going to let him have his dignity, but he got all defensive and starting yelling that he wasn't a fag and all. I thought it was funny at the time, poor guy, dammit.
My little misassumption reminded me of that story, so I just had to share.

hehe...(((hugs back))) Actually, you are not the first to make such an error. Sal can be short for Salvadore and various other names. In my case "S A L" ... those are my initials for my name. Also you mainly post in politics or world news. When posting there I have a different style than I would use in say Chat or religion.
On another forum, a guy basically called me out, wanted to fight, was baiting me and made references to my anatomy. I thought it was hilarious. When he found out I was female, he felt stupid for having escalated that far and it pretty much ended our aggression toward each other from there on in as we had a humour connection to fall back on. Even though we were politically polarized in almost every way.
Actually that's one of the things I love about posting boards. Opinion do not have to be attached to a sex. An opinion does not have to coloured by the sex of the person presenting. So actually I took it as a compliment.
And thanks for sharing the chat story. It is funny. Shocklance sounds pretty neutral actually. And a good reminder that all is not always as it appears to be. :)
Catch ya in another thread.

Never mind. I found it.

Google and Yahoo send out slurp BOTS that scan posts for key words. I had them all the time on my board. I was banning them but they'd be back later, haha.
They collect the posts for different reasons, usually info for stats. I found out they actually were mirroring my board because after it got deleted from the server *because RJ didn't pay*, I found it again later thru one of The Dude's links.
You can make your own bot to search the net for you. Don't ask me how, I've never done it but a guy I know from another forum I visit does it. He makes interactive bots too, ones that you can have a convo with.
I'd say that would be a large reason why we have so many lurkers.
~Sal~
06-26-2007, 11:09 AM
Imp do you think government bots would be scanning looking for subversive posts? I do, but I can tend toward the paranoid at times. Then again it would now be a security measure much more than ever before.

I think alot of it has to do with the mention of brand names, too. On Yahell, they have a system of recommending a post, which alot of trolls have fun with. But I know once I mentioned having gotten a Tempurpedic matress and how great it was... and BINGO, that post had a bunch of RECS real quick!
Y'all are probably right about monitoring for terroristic stuff too... but you gotta wonder... WHO does the monitoring?
I can hear it now: phone rings -- "Thank you for calling the National BOTS Center for Message Board Scrutiny. At the sound of the tone, please leave your IP address and we'll get back to you ASAP."
;)
SMW
Imp do you think government bots would be scanning looking for subversive posts? I do, but I can tend toward the paranoid at times. Then again it would now be a security measure much more than ever before. O, most definitely Sal. and like you said, threatening or terroristic posts, moreso code words used.
You are not paranoid at all, big brother is watching and reading right along beside us... and sometimes posting.
I had a friend in Ny who, right after 911, tried hacking into the CeeEyeAay computer. I told him he was friggin' nuts. They managed to bypass his answering machine and in amazement he picked up the phone. They told him they know him and what he is doing and will be there immmediately the next time they see him even attempt to hack them. They told him he is being watched now.
My friend is a borderline genius. He lacks the common sense god gave a goose. He was more impressed they bypassed his answering machine then the fact he was staring federal prison in the face. Needless to say I will NOT communicate with him via the net.
We are all being monitered to some extent, every post, email or PM we make is being recorded. They don't care about peons like us, but our info IS being collected. I was shocked as hell when I seen the mirror site to my board.
We are like an electronic ant farm and yes, people get paid to sit there and study us. We have the freedm to surf the net and post as we wish, they have the same freedom to gather our info. My two cents.
SMW's right too, keywords to brand names. That's from the ad companies for their info and stats and desire to stuff pop ups in our face.

Now that's an amazing story!! Talk about stirring up trouble for ones self!
I remember when Al Gore first invented the internet and we were all scared to death our employers would be reading every word we typed 'on their nickle.' While definitely POSSIBLE, it never really became a reality. How many people are interested in wading through millions of emails about one's Aunt Edna and the boil on her butt in the hopes of getting to jucier stuff?
Some companies (like TI here) do 'word searches' to catch any obscene behavior by their employees. But like any 'system' there's always a way around it. (A friend who works there found out they have another email server that doesn't go thru the clearance machine, so he encourages me to send him dirty stuff to that address. Of course, I never do. *koff*)
