I guess the Norwegians want crabs to be given an anesthetic first, or maybe to be humanely killed by lethal injection. Hell, he tried to beat them to death first. When I boil crabs I simply drop them in boiling water. The end is quick.
Sort of reminds me of Larry the Lobster.
Charged after crab boiling
Aftenposten's food writer Yngve Ekern has been charged with animal cruelty by animal rights group NOAH after an article about cooking crabs.
Food writer Yngve Ekern is sorry he offended animal rights activists.
The case against Ekern has been dismissed and instead referred to the Conciliation Board, reports trade newspaper Journalisten on its web site, but there will be repercussions.
Ekern angered animal activists with his description of preparing crabs on the beach while his children were watching. He described throwing the crabs into hot oil after bashing them on a cutting board, a process that didn't kill all of them.
The article also outlined how to boil crabs, and included recipes.
"Showing how to boil living crabs is encouraging law-breaking. Crabs are also covered by the Animal Protection Act, and animals shall not be exposed to pain," NOAH leader Siri Martinsen told Journalisten.no.
"It is highly probable that crabs have the ability to feel pain. We know too little about it and the animals should get the benefit of the doubt," she said.
Ekern was saddened by the charges and will meet NOAH at the Conciliation Board on Monday.
"I think on should turn up and hear what NOAH has to say, and I am especially looking forward to hearing an alternative method of boiling crabs, because they are traditionally boiled alive," Ekern said.
Senior researcher Stein Martinsen at the Institute of Marine Research does not have good news for NOAH.
"It is difficult to kill shellfish in other ways than boiling. I know some who hack lobsters in two, but they have a tiny brain that is not so easy to hit," Martinsen said.
Personally, he lets the crabs get very cold before boiling them.
"They get practically anesthetized lying in the refrigerator. If you then make sure that the water is boiling, it goes quickly," Martinsen said.
Norway's Food Safety Authority will establish a committee to examine the question of what crabs can feel during the boiling.

Is it the bashing or the boiling that caused the most problem? Bashing seems very unorthodox to me and makes more sense if that method raises an eye brow or two. But boiling live is as he said very common and traditionally done. Basically that's how most restaurants cook their crabs I would think. So what's the big deal.

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing. The bashing seems a bit ridiculous to me, but they are typically boiled.

I'm glad to see we aren't the only country wasting hard-earned tax dollars on stuff like this.
Wonder who's gonna get thrown into the pot to see if it hurts or not?

It was the boiling. Not all the crabs died during the bashing and that is what got the animal rights activists so upset. They were basically bashed so they wouldn't feel the boiling.
I think Norwegians should eat only crabs that have died of old age.

There was this story about some guy who want to a crab boil and was shocked to see live crabs thrown in boiling water to be cooked. Asked if the boiling water is painful to the crabs, which were boiling a few minutes by then, a guy replied, "nah, they're used to it by now."
Dammit.

PETA might not be, but the Navy sure would be. They'd probably send the grown up Seals after you.

Noway's a one to talk.
Their government sanctioned whaling not long ago.
Maybe they should fret less about crabs and worry more about Moby Dick.

o.k.........first things first.....crabs and lobster are invertabraes, they live in the water and have no sense of feeling like humans do........does no one know their biology in Norway?
I would think Norway would be doing more to get their drunks under control more than worrying about the feelings of an animal bred for human consumption

We're having barbecued ribs, chicken, and crabs for Father's Day. I'll just boil the crabs in water with a bunch of Old Bay seasoning. Yummmm! Crabs with melted butter, coleslaw and corn on the cob out on the deck.

Heaven is sitting at a table with a red and white checked tablecloth in some crab shack with a pile of mixed crab legs done up in Old Bay in front of you; some Snow Crab, King Crab, Blue Claws, with cole slaw and crisp french fries.
When I visit my youngest son in Deleware we often head for the shore to 'do crabs'.

I think that crabs feel pain when dropped into boiling water (wouldn't you). I dated a guy with a 38 foot cabin cruiser and he would take me out in Puget Sound and we would go crabbing. The way he killed them was with a machete.
Step 1 - Boil large pot of salt water.
Step 2 - Take each Crab, one at a time, on a chopping block.
Step 3 - Using the macheti, chop each Crab in half, right down the center of the head and back (ensures instant death).
Step 4 - Put each half of crab body in boiling water.
Step 5 - Remove crabs after 20 minutes, clean them, then refrigerate.

The problem with boiling crabs or lobsters after cutting them in half is that the tasty juices will be lost in the water. That's very undesirable for food lovers like Frogger and myself.

exactly.....the shell keeps their natural juices intact so when you get them and crack them open........I shall stop there now cause I am getting hungry:smile2:

Those crabs aren't so bad except for one thing. Every time you take a shower they crawl up your asshole to keep dry. Then after you dry off they crawl back into your pubic hair tracking shit along along your side.
There is an easy way to get rid of them though. You shave half your pubic hair and then light the other half. When the crabs run out of the burning pubic hair you stab them to death with an icepick.

Crabs and lobster may not have the complexity of feelings that we do, but they do feel pain. I remember putting a "dead" crab into a pot of water and put the heat on. I came back as the water was getting very warm and the crab was desperately trying to get out of the pot. Crabs and lobsters feel pain. Which is why I don't waste what I catch, dammit.

You'd better watch out, phyrex, I have no compunction about sharing my crabs, dammit.
