I am using Windows XP prof. Prior to this, I had 98SE. Since after I started using XP, I find that it is very slow compared to the other one. I have a P4 1.7 processor, with 256 MB of RAM. Is there any problem with my machine?

XP is slower than 98 in my opinion. They just add so much junk in every version it gets slower and slower, unless you upgrade your PC. Im using a 1.6 Ghz pentium with 1024 MB ram and it runs fine. It shouldn't be too slow. Maybe you have some spyware / viruses? See here for how to get rid of em List of the best free spyware adware virus removers (http://freedomsforums.com/spyware-adware-viruses-t22.html)

XP is way more resource heavy then 98se...

You can help it by ending task on alot of crap....

See this (http://www.realtechnews.com/posts/1949) for some tips :)

Good to see you posting :)

Yes. You need more RAM. And, ideally, an upgraded CPU.

Your ram is way, way inadequate. Windows XP will suck every single ounce of your 256 MB of RAM just idling. Windows XP is a fat, bloated OS and does suck up quite a bit of computer resources, especially RAM. Try to run a program and you're guaranteed that your machine will be using virtual memory. Virtual memory is when a computer system uses space on the hard disk to function as RAM. It does work, but it's slow and computers seem to crash a lot when having to rely on virtual memory all the time.

The RAM modules, if they're available at all, should be dirt cheap. I'd at least double the ram, and going for a gig of RAM wouldn't be all that bad of an idea, dammit.

Or you could dump Windows XP and go to Linux. Which has a rather nice habbit of being perfectly happy functioning on old hardware, dammit.

Mine doesnt handle Virtual Ram very well i can tell you that! (I only have 56.8Megs of ram so my computer uses VIRTUAL RAM almost constantly i think)

I have been wanting to upgrade my ram but just havent gotton off my ass to do it...

You could build a machine that would run rings around that dinosaur you're using for under $700. I just zipped over to newegg.com and chose the cheapest good quality components and "assembled" the box.

People really should learn to build their own computers, you get so much better for less money, dammit.

Wow, lol, how does a computer even run on 64 megs of RAM =\

My computer has more RAM than his by a factor of two to the fifth.

I have 2 more slots in my tower i was gonna add 256 in it.... (@ least it would run better and not have to use the swap file as much)

That's still not nearly enough. Modern computers need at least 512 MiB, preferably 1 GiB.

What the best ram for 98se??

I mean, she runs OK on 64M but uses the swap file heavily...... I really should put a 256 or 512m stick in there i dunno.....

98 doesnt recongnize anything over 512 right? (w/o a reg tweak) So it would be pointless adding more than that...

Thanks for all the suggestions and help. I wish to upgrade my memory to atleast 512MB. The machine always indicate that virtual memory is too low.

I have my VM settings set to automatic (Windows handles the swap file)

I heard there is another way of doing it but i havent tried....

You definitly need to add 256mb of ram to your system. If you are unhappy with XP try going back to using windows Me.It is efficient for all applications.
