Eminem is an amazing artist that has deep, but also clever lyrics with catchy beats. He's honestly a lyrical genius.

What do you all think of him??

He's a good rapper, not the best but definitely better than the vast majority of them. I haven't really liked his most recent stuff, I think what made him great originally was how much emotion he seemed to put in each one of his songs. I think he's lost some of his fire.

I went through a small rap phase when he was just starting out, his old stuff is pretty good. I pretty much despise 98.984938% of rap now anyways. Unless I'm in the club that is.

I have to agree. I would go so far as to say he is one of the most groundbreaking artists in current memory. He is one of, if not THE, best lyricist of all time.

Very groundbreaking I agree. But I don't think I'd call him the best lyricist. And most of his stuff kind of annoys me. It's that voice I suppose.

Marshall Mathers (Slim Shady, Eminem) is a slick opportunist, true.
An entertainer, no doubt.
A self-admitted fraud, to be sure.
Compromising all credible artistic principles to sell the maximum number of CD's to the maximum number of troubled, flacid, insecure, thumb-sucking, suburban young lost-boy wanna-be rapper white kids?
Absolutely.
But a lyrical genius?
Sorry, I would have to disagree with that.
He's a vaguely talented, opportunistic seller of a product, and nothing more.
Say, Ja Rule; is that white boy laughing all the way to the bank?
HELL YEAH!!

In terms of rappers, Zack de la Rocha, KRS One, and a few others beat Eminem for me.

I agree. His lyrics are amazing and he is a true genius. One of the best ever.
Eminem has a way of putting words together that make such a strong point in a funny and clever way. He deserves all the credit and awards he has won.

Mathers is one of the best of the rappers, far better than most but he is no Vanilla Ice. Now there was a guy with talent. He was as good in rap as Fabian was in rock and roll.

I was against him at first. I let the media blind me to his great talent.
I picked up the Eminem Show when it came out, and was like, WOW!! He is truly talented. I have since picked up the rest of his stuff. So, glad I gave him a chance!
Good stuff!!!

Phyrex - there are a lot of rappers that have made the same comment. Even some of his rivals have stated that Eminem is the best lyricist yet.
As for his best album - it is without doubt, The Marshal Mathers LP, which is the greatest rap album of all time as well. - And yes I just said that and I truly believe it.

His lack of class and poetic sophistication leave a lot to be desired, especially if one is to be called the greatest lyricist ever. And even then he lacks the reputation and effect, as well as writing recognition, of other lyricists such as Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, and John Lennon.

Eminem's songs have no staying power... they get old in like 2 weeks.
He's a good lyricist, but I would put some people over him as far as "best of all time" go...
And yea, EVERY rapper seems to claim they are "the best of all time".. I guess they saw that making that claim worked for Muhammad Ali and Jay Z, so they said "hey why not"

so what if the next polka release puts "shake that" in THEIR song? you gonna get up and grind to THAT in the club? LOL.
OD probably just thinks eminem is hot, thus justifying how great he is. I could be wrong, and OD will definitely deny it, because who wants to be labeled as simple nowadays?

Yes, Eminem is attractive. Why would I deny thinking that?
However, that has nothing to do with why I believe Eminem is a strong musician. Whenever I listen to his songs and how they flow and how clever and meaningful the lyrics are, I can't help but believe he is a great musician.
Not that awards mean much, but Eminem has won many, many grammies and his albums have made some of the greatest CD's ever lists. Almost all of his CD's have gotten RAVE reviews, usually getting 4 to 5 stars. Clearly, many people believe his music is of good, strong quality. Hell, JereJere (who most likely does not think Eminem is attractive, since he isn't gay) admits to liking Eminem.
To even bring up my sexuality is evidence, that again shows that I don't bring it up, but that EVERYONE ELSE brings it up. Thanks for proving that again, Decka.
Honestly, I'm offended that you would even bring it up and think that that's the reason I like him.

Yes, I agree with OD, that was inappropriate and mean-spirited.
I myself admire the music, songwriting, production values, and pop-craft of Adrian Belew and Jeff Lynne, but I certainly do not want to sleep with them.
Now Bonnie Raitt or Joan Armatrading?
Now, there's two talented musician songwriters that I'd probably hop in the sack with, if given the opportunity.
Joan Jett too, and probably the entire Lilith Fair stable of artists as well.
(If I was single, available, and up to the task, which I certainly am not.
So there's probably no point in discussing it, really.)
Anyway, let's just discuss the music, and leave the sexuality out of it.
PS Oh yeah. The Bangles and The Go-Go's. I'd definitely like to sleep with all those ladies.

My favorite show is Roseanne and no one on that show is attractive. Eminem being attractive is just a bonus. :)

Comedy is a different sect of entertainment.. you can be fat, ugly, and funny, it's actually a good formula.. but you can't be fat, ugly, and taken seriously... well rarely it happens.

:@@: I took Roseanne seriously. She is a very smart women who I look up to. She controlled her own show and made it one of the most successful shows of all-time.
The show is also not just about "comedy"...it brought up many issues like abortion, drug and alcohol abuse, sex, physical and mental abuse, and money problems. The show, in all honesty, is a dramedy.
Decka, I'm just pointing out that I like things because of their talent...not just because of their looks. But again, looks ARE a bonus.

I enjoy his music in bursts.
More so things like "Run Rabbit Run" which is just emotional fuelled rage with no chorus or much of a tune just him rapping contionuslly flowing as he does.
He does have a very clever way of making just about any word smoothly transistion into another regardless of whether they even remotely rhyme.
Personally though my favourate rappers are DMX, Dead Prez and Bone Thugs N Harmony.
DMX for his raw grunt, some of the "Prayer" songs are truly classic with an often frightening authenticity to his words. Plus he was truly badass back in the day lol
Dead Prez because apart from their clear "Yo white people keeping a brother down" attitude that never ceases to bring a smile to my face, the beats they use compliment the raps really well. Classics such as "Hell Yeah" and "Hip-Hop" clear examples of this.
And lastly Bone Thugs for making great raps i have never been able to hear properlly as to what is being said.

Eminem's as popular as he is because he's seen more like a pop star than a rapper (though I doubt he intended it be that way). Hence you see people who normally listen to Top 40 pop, and have probably never bought a rap CD in their lives, singing along to Eminem songs.

To a large degree that is the only a way a rapper can be financially successful. There was an article in the USA Today within the last month talking about how rap has declined to virtually being a small blimp on the radar of music. Rappers like DMX have no audience anymore. Outside of those kids that wear the Southpole clolthes and wear a dorag, anyway.
Eminem's "humor songs" as I call them (e.g. My Name Is, Real Slim Shady, Without Me etc) are there to sell the album so that more important songs - those with more meaning and lyrical merit like Lose Yourself, Toy Soldiers, and I Am Whatever You Say I am etc can be heard and appreciated as well.
