View Full Version : Username abuse

BorgHunter

It was brought to my attention today that four users (two of which have not posted) have the same IP addresses. These users are Independent, borntobegay, funindependent, and warrior1972. Furthermore, the following was noted: Warrior's last activity was on June 4th at 15:06. The three sockpuppet accounts have the following join date and times:

borntobegay: June 4, 15:10
Independent: June 4, 15:29
funindependent: June 4, 15:42

All four users' accounts have been banned and I have issued an IP ban on the shared IP address. If any more members show abusive or similar behavior to the above users, please send me, Sparky2, and/or Vilepagan a PM and appropriate action will be taken. Be sure to include evidence, why you think this is the same user, so forth.

Allforums has a very strict policy of one account per user. Use of multiple accounts can result in a permaban. Please use common sense, etc. etc.

Oh, and credit where credit is due: Our new moderator, Sparky, pointed out the matching IPs.

I sometimes take the moderation here for granted, and would like to say thanks to Borg, Vile, and Sparky (grats BTW). A special thanks to Drew for providing this site for our use.

There were posters who said she seemed to have multiple personas, nice one minute and hell on wheels the next. It seems they were right. Reminds me of, The Three Faces Of Eve.

I'm a little surprised - funindependent seemed to be pretty normal.

For the sake of argument, what if my girlfriend wished to use my computer and post here. She'd have to have a seperate account, but the IP would be the same. Would that be against the rules? Would an explanation be required? It's a good idea to stop one person from having multiple screen names, but what if two people share a broadband connection and post here?

Dammit.

If you and mac use the same computer to access the 'net and post here, then yes, your IP address will be the same. If you and your friend shared a DSL or cable connection through a router, your IP address would be the same. I don't think you will have to worry about being banned. While Borg's reasoning is solid and no getting around, I more than suspect that it wasn't the only factor in getting warrior, independent, funindependent and so forth banned.

DarkFantasy96
06-09-2007, 09:36 PM
I did suspect that funindependent was warrior. First I was just surprised that two people would come along in such quick succession with the ability to piss me off SO MUCH. I am usually a pretty easygoing type of gal. So then I said to myself... "If I took funindependent's posts, took the spelling down a few notches and added a few more "fuck"s and "bitch"es... OMG IT'S WARRIOR"

Frogger
06-09-2007, 09:44 PM
I was going to request that Warrior be unbanned but then I read her thread in which she said goodbye to Allforums. It was so filled with hatred that it actually made me uncomfortable. People like that are probably capable of hunting you down in real life and doing something quite damaging. It is probably best that her IP be permenantly banned.

It would not be against the rules, no. An explanation would only be required if one of the admins confronted you about it, which would indicate that there was a problem. None of the admins go hunting in IP logs looking for similar IPs so they can ban people. And we're not going to outright ban someone just for that, either.

Littlejoe, don't worry, I have no reason to ban you. Common IPs DO occur sometimes. I'm sure if you checked my IP logs, some IPs I have logged on with, Blibblob and Idioteque have also logged on with. Why? Because the three of us went to the same high school. I'm an intelligent and reasonable guy, littlejoe, I'm not going to ban you because you and Mac have used the same computer. Neither of you is a negative influence on the boards and I have no reason to think you're the same person anyway. :)

Borg, are you telling us that you, gasp!, posted while in school. Oh the shame. Oh the horror. You were supposed to be studying not posting in a chat room.

March yourself right back to your old high school and tell them what you did and ask them to rescind your diploma. You too, blibblob.

I post here under forty six different names but since in real life I am a multi-billiionaire I have forty six different computers with forty six different IPs. My average internet costs run into well over five figures.

Now if I could only do something about my lousy combover and get rid of that bitch, Rosie.

Other than rogue troupe of Many little Trolls running amuck and

Does sound all ruther Big Brother - Farenheit 451 - ta MEad.

When a person has more than one persona it artificially changes the dynamics of debate. The way the system is set up a poster tries to convince others to see things his way by posting certain facts or opinions. The number of posters who agree with him or disagree with him is a fairly reliable guage of how effective he has been. If a poster were allowed multiple personae he could post false agreements with his position thereby skewing the results unfairly.

I post on another board where this happened. A poster had three personae that acted in concert giving her much more moral authority than she deserved.

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay TOO Technical.This isn't a College Debate.
Or Algonquin Round Table.
S'not eben a gathering of Bridge couples.
Bridge allows for a dummy hand.
It's fashioned to make it very easy to Moderate.
The more Trolls, the harder it is to supervise.
A Message Board should'nt bee about control.

I appreciate the mods for keeping this under control. It's hard enough to know who/what you're interacting with, let alone somebody who has multiple personalities. It's called trolling and it does screw with the dynamics of the forum.

Again, thanks to the mods for catching this!

Depends on what "this" is....if you're talking about the person with multiple personas on the forum, I found nothing "it" ever said profound. "It" has proven to be a very disturbed individual.

Their ball, their rules, foolsworth. The same thing applies here. There is no "fairness" or who's watching the watchers, it's someone ELSE'S forum and they may do as they please*. Upset the people here too much and out you go. Plain and simple, dammit.

*Please note that I'm not accusing ANY of the moderators of acting in any kind of unfair manner. All I'm saying is that they have the power to enforce policies that they believe are in the best interest of governing these boards. It MAY come off as unfair to some, but in the end, it's their decisions and we have to abide by them, dammit.
