View Full Version : obvious crap
i am keeping an eye on my in-laws house while they are out of town, so i use the computer for longer periods. and the comp moves REALLLY SLOW, since it is dial-up. so, i have a tv on for distraction. yesterday night i see part of MAN VS WILD. i am an outdoor enthusist(SP?), tracker, hunter, primitive skills , etc.. and the show just doesn't cut it. first, to "survive" in the "wild" you have to change your mindset. you have to stop thinking "me against the wild" and learn to meld into it, and live WITH it. learn and accept its ebb and flow.
the guy is in alaska, and obviously he is from briton originally. he finds salmon in a stream. he get a really BIG stick and sharpens a fork on it. the stick is far too large in circumference to be really effective on fishing. i'd have chosen a smaller thinner but still strong branch to sharpen. he catches a fish. he starts eating it without scaling it first. he has a friggin knife.
then he finds a cabin. abandoned. i can buy that. and he "finds" a boat on shore in high grass. BEEP! wrong!!!!! it is obvious the grass was pushed down and to the sides not long ago. like 5 minutes before the scene was filmed. and there was an obvious trail leading in and out of the grass where the person put the boat there. they tried to hide the trail in the grass, but it didn't work.
sorry guys, this show fails on all accounts. except scenery. i then immediately turned the channel.

Ivan,
I think you would prefer the program, Survivorman starring Les Stroud.
Les Stroud is a camerman who is dropped off in remote locations all by himself. He usually has nothing but an energy candy bar and a Swiss Army Knife with him. Unlike Man vs. Wild, he has no camera crew to film him.
Stroud carries about fifty pounds of filming equipment with him and sets up all his own cameras. He often sets up a camera to show him walking quite a distance and then has to go back, pack up the camera and rewalk the distance he has just filmed.
Stroud's mission is to survive alone for up to a week while walking out of wherever he is to meet his support crew. Until he does that he is all alone doing all the filming and doing his best to find food, water and shelter while he is working his way back to civilization.
i've seen one episode of that one. he was in the sonora desert. seemed much better than man vs wild.
i may order his first season dvd.

It is carried on the science channel. I don't think it is presently being shown but I am pretty sure it will be renewed.

In-laws?
Go into the master bedroom at night with whip cream and pots/pans. Then go wild.
Oh, wait, in-laws house.
Well, do it anyway, although it will be considerably less fun without them sleeping there.

Okay he looks interesting. Thanks ivan.
i'm seeing another episode of "MAN VS. WILD" right now. this man is an absolute idiot. well, almost. he has some useful knowledge, but he does so many things WRONG. no real survivor would run down a mountain. risk a broken leg, and risk dieing.
he catches a fish. he has the ability to make a fire. he eats it raw. but he boils his water for safe drinking water. ok.
he gets himself soaking wet on purpose. idiot.
the show is obviously just "show". no real substance for survival and again, the man agaist nature mentality.

wouldn't eating a raw fish expose you to possible worms or more... I wouldn't want to get the runs out there, dehydrate and have some animal finish me off...
speaking of animals finishing you off... there was a movie we started to watch last night called... Grizzly Rage... man it sucked.... these kids end up in the middle of nowhere with a mad momma grizzly tracking them... five minutes into the show you just pray she kills them all ... fast...
I did like the one with Anthony Hopkins called The Edge where they are being tracked by a bear. I liked one of the lines a lot...."Most people lost in the wild die of shame. They didn't do the one thing that could save their lives-- thinking".
love it.
people go from modern age civilization to "primitive" do seem to not think. they got too used to the "instant" life. no thought required.

I'm going to go out on a limb here, Ivan, but let me suggest this:
Turn the TV and the computer off and ACTUALLY GO OUTSIDE AND EXPLORE THE OUTDOORS for real !!
Then come back and tell us about it.
Much more visceral and real than complaining about whether an outdoorsy TV show is real or not.

I've seen all the Man vs. Wild episodes, some as many as 3 times.
Bear is not only an explorer but also a Naturalist. He knpws how
to survive. He is dropped off at a different, difficlt Locale
and has to find his way back to civilization. He does have a film
crew, otherwise how would we get those great LIVE shots.
He usually has just a pocket knife {nothin big or fancy } No matches
so,has to make a fire the indian way, most often.
He has to use whatever is on hand from nature for Food,
I've seem him eat termites {high in protein} and later puked his
guts up.He moves fast and smartly.
He does try and blend-in and adapt to his environ. But he also
like many of natures predators, either insect or furry,Flora or
Fauna,is competing to stay alive amidst Survival of the Fittest.
Darwin and Thoreau wood both be proud of Bear.
He ain't a big strappin guy, butts,he's tough as nails.

I on the other hand think of the Hilton as camping. That's as rustic as I get. Well except for a hiking weekend we did a few weeks ago. The cabin had no phone or air conditioning and the bathroom pretty much sucked. :D I doubt I'll spend another weekend there although it was right on the river and the sun rose on that side so that made it worth it... almost.
I do though like the idea of vacarious outdoor living... especially when the wine is chilled, and the caterer is arriving with the dinner. ;)

To prove how utterly NAIVE you are,I think yer just jealous of Bear.
There's Virtually a reason for everything he does.He doesn't
rely on Luck, but ruther his wits.
I believe the reason he ran down that Mountain,if that was the Alps
episode was from prior experience. He knew that he had to warm up
and that the terrain was just as hazardous walkin, maybe more so than
just scalin rapidly. One can twist their ankle by merely steppin sideways
on a stone.
There...I just proved how dumb & naive you are.

I am glad no one filmed some of my learning experiences in the wild. That I have survived some of them without severe injury or worse is surprising. Over the years I have gotten smarter about what I do. I have never learned much of anything useful for surviving in the wilderness from television shows about the subject.

The difference between Man vs Wild and Survivorman is the safety net. If Bear gets hurt or sick he has his crew with him and is in able to instantly communicate with the outside world. He doesn't really need to rely on himself.
Les Stroud is all alone. He is supposed to meet with people after five days but during the intervening time he is dependent on his own wits and abilities. I find his show much more realistic.
the reason why i can critique these bullshit shows is because i have lived the "wild" .
i am now married with children and have bills to pay so my time i the woods is cut short.
see my sig, i disappear for 4 days next month.
but WHEN things go bad , i know i ain't runnin in circles squeeling like a little girl going, "oh my god, oh my god........"
anyone watch the movie "snow walker"? did anyone notice the MENTALITY of the two individuals? one is inuit, she is calm, she is at home, and does not feel as if it is all freak out mode to be in the "wilderness". no big deal. the other person , an anglo, has the "oh fuck i'm gonna die" attitude.
the show "man vs wild" has that attitude. you may learn something out of it. but a lot of it is something i would never do. like intentionally get soaking wet. run down hills and risk broken bones, etc.. his attitude, and the show is , pay attention to this part, MAN VS WILD. but they have to do shows like this to get people to stay interested enough to watch it.

OK,That Marlin Perkins.
The fact is -- Man vs. Wild -- is highly instructive.
It's basically ALL ABOUT what to do in order to stay alive in the Wild.
I guarantee you and others, are bound to learnt more than just a
few tips per hr.long episode.
I'd say,basically every 5 minutes there's a deadly serious Tip that'll
either save ones life,or help to keep going.
Mr.Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom.
yeah, right. remember foolsworth, i noticed how someone had placed a boat in the grass just minutes before filming the scene and he acts like it was just there for some long time. you can tell it was just placed there. and in many places he walks right by many edible plants to dig up bugs for the "exciting" yuck factor, or eat raw fish risking worms. the man is just in it for the $ and to "shock" people. survivorman is a lot better. but even better is doing it yourself.

Next tingy yer gonna say is that Bear guy can't climb or hike.
You just can't handle the fact Bear does all that stuff with such
ease and lack of Fear.
Like I said,the Guys kinda small,but wiry.
I remember years ago, thinkin All good Truckers were fat and smoked
