I'm typing this from my work computer. The one at home locked up today, and when I tried to reboot it, it went into MS-DOS mode asking for a reboot disk. When I installed the reboot disk, it tries to start up, then goes right back to the same request again. I tried running a disgnostis test and the results told me that I was missing a FAT command. Right now, (before I left for work), I ran a debug.exe command that should still be running right now and plan to run a scandisk.exe command when I get back home. Is there any way I can fix this without taking it to the shop ( or worse, buyng a new one)

I wonder if your S.M.A.R.T sector went out or if it is just the boot record...
Have you tried hooking it up to another computer and running a full disk scan??
Good luck!!!

Ah, computer problems... I have an appointment with the "Genius Bar" at the Apple Store tomorrow morning because my charger/adapter thingie is malfunctioning. Haven't had any problems so far with the actual computer though, and I've had it since November. Pretty good for a piece of modern technology I think. :lolhit:

O.K....This is wierd :@@:
Last night before leaving for work, I started a DEBUG.EXE command and let it run while walking out the door. I get home this morning and the program still seemed to be running. I thought "this isnt right". So I rebooted the computer "again" and lo and behold, the whole thing comes back up again
I have no idea what happened, but I'm glad that its back on line again :)

Excellent, maybe by running DEBUG.exe it fixed the error :)

When DEBUG starts with no command-line parameters, it:
1) Allocates all 64 KiB of the first free Memory Segment.
2) The Segment registers, CS, DS, ES and SS are all set to the value of that 64 KiB Segment's location (CS=DS=ES=SS=Segment Location ).
3) The Instruction Pointer (IP) is set to cs:0100 and the Stack Pointer (SP) is set to ss:FFEE (under DOS 3.0 or above).
4) The registers, AX, BX, CX, DX, BP, SI and DI are cleared to zero along with the flag bits in the Flag Register; with one exception: The Interrupts Flag is set to Enable Interrupts.
I'm curious how reseting some registers could fix your problem. I'm thinking it was fixed by something unrelated to debug.

debug is like "scan disk" right?? Any errors it finds are fixed??
Something was fixed when he ran debug......

Debug doesn't search for errors. As I understand it, it resets some registers and outputs a hex dump. I don't see how that would fix anything.

Well it turned out to be something in the computer, not the power cord. So they had to take it in for repair. But it's okay because my laptop is still under warranty and they'll do it for free. They're also going to fix the little piece of plastic that came off of the front of it. So I'm just using my parents' computer for a week or so.

i had the same thing happen with my Compaq...oddly, they aren't that tolerant of being used on an uneven surface where the plug gets tweaked.

Dunkirk,
I remotely accessed your computer and repaired it. The total job took three and one half hours. My usual rate is $50 per hour but since you are a cyberbuddy I will charge you only $30 per hour. Please remit the money to me through paypal.
Thank you in advance.

I am happy that your hard drive is running smoothly. It is really interesting to run diagnostic tests.I suggest that you download the right diagnostic software for free from the hard drive manufacturer,it is free and try saving it on cd.I use these diagnostic softwares to fix many different hard drives. Also it help to start repartitioning the scanning ot see if it helps.
