I agree that religion should be kept out of politics. However, it's my opinion that believing in something bigger than yourself can be immensely healthy. How could it be unhealthy? How can believing in something bigger that yourself be immesely healthy for you? I mean if something fails to correspond with reality or logic how does that make you healthy? Of course, I agree religion should be kept out of politics but unfortunatly some people don't see it that way. They think the United States was built on chrisianity and that is just not true.

How would the existence of God fail to correspond with reality or logic? And don't give me arguments against Christianity; I am not a Christian and I'm just talking about belief in God.

None of the history books claim to be the absolute guide to "everlasting life" if the precepts found within are followed. None of the history books in question urge the reader to base his entire life on the veracity of what is contained within.Does the Bible claim to be an absolute guide to anything? Does the Bible urge the reader to base his life on the veracity of what is claimed therein? (if you say it does, please provide a cite reference.)

(if you say it does, please provide a cite reference.) Well the Bible may not say it but certainly many believers will tell you that is the case. Like my Seventh-day-adventist neighbor that also tells me all the people that go to church on sunday instead of saturday are going to hell. Well the Bible may not say it but certainly many believers will tell you that is the case.True, true. I only raise this set of questions to point to the need to seperate our claims about the Bible and the claims that some people make about the Bible (which clearly over reach.) The rhetoric of both sides can be flat wrong and miss the entire point. Any hope of real discussion then runs the risk of becoming a pointless shouting match of slogans devoid of truth, or even basic accuracy.

Assume! Now, if you could just solve the riddle of The Seals in Revelation we can wrap this up! (Seems they were working on that deal in Waco but, well, the dog ate their homework.)

I find it really interesting to study the Bible... not necessarily content-wise, but the history of how it was written, by whom, and why. Over 40 authors, from 40 generations, written over a period of 1500 years. How could it have NOT been written with divine guidance?

This question came up earlier, but I don't think anyone ever attempted to answer it.

If YOU and YOUR FRIENDS had to write an instruction book for life in the year 2007, how well do you think the lessons would translate in the year 4007? What would people say about your 'wisdom?' How could it be possible to write a book today that would even be around in two thousand years??

One other question: If you don't believe in God, how do you think the men who authored the Bible figured out what to write? And how did they keep the project going for 1500 years in a time with such limited means of communication, travel and knowledge?

What do you think?

:)
SMW

Well there are othe books that have lasted longer of course. Also, did you see my thread on the Jesys Myth?

A great one volume work on the inspiration, canonization, transmission and translation of the Bible is A General Introduction to the Bible (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0802429165?ie=UTF8&tag=dklgiftscolle-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0802429165). If you want a well written book by two highly recognized Bible scholars that will be an excellent supplement to your study and understanding of the Bible plus provide an excellent reference to use whenever you need to find a quick and accurate answer to a historical Bible question, this is the book for you.

Jbaaron, welcome to All Forums! Thank you, yours is a Christian gift to everbody!
