" He is laughing, with a touch of anger in his laughter,
but no triumph,no malignity. It is the face of a man who is
always fighting against something, but who fights in the open
and is not frightened, the face of a man who is generously angry --
in other words,of a nineteenth-century liberal,a free intelligence,
a type hated with equal hatred by all the smelly little orthodoxies
which are now contending for our souls. "

Who is He ?
And whose quote.?

earlier in the day, righto ?Maybe. I did notice your odd use of 'ne' rather than 'née'. But I think I would have gotten it anyway. '19th Century liberal' is a good clue; Dickens is the obvious guess there. It also means the writer is post-19th century, and who struggled more than Orwell against 'smelly little orthodoxies'? And all it tooks was a quickie visit to WikipediA ?
Say it IS so.!I used Google to confirm my guess. :)
