SHALL WE HIRE A MONUMENT ENGRAVER TO GO TO ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETERY
AND ADD THE MISSING WORDS ?

A MESSAGE FROM AN APPALLED OBSERVER:

Today I went to visit the new World War
II Memorial in Washington, DC I got an unexpected history lesson. Because
I'm a baby boomer, I was one of the youngest in the crowd. Most were the
age of my parents, Veterans of "the greatest war," with their families.
It
was a beautiful day, and people were smiling and happy to be there.
Hundreds of us milled around the memorial, reading the inspiring words of
Eisenhower and Truman that are engraved there.

On the Pacific side of the memorial, a group of us gathered to read the
words President Roosevelt used to announce the attack on Pearl Harbor:

Yesterday, December 7,
1941-- a date which will live in infamy--the United States of America was
suddenly and deliberately attacked.

One elderly woman read the words aloud:

"With confidence in our armed forces, with the abounding determination of
our people, we will gain the inevitable triumph."

But as she read, she was suddenly turned angry. "Wait a minute," she
said,
"they left out the end of the quote.. They left out the most important part.
Roosevelt ended the message with "so help us God."

Her husband said, "You are probably right. We're not supposed to say
things like that now."

"I know I'm right," she insisted. "I remember the speech."
The two
looked
dismayed, shook their heads sadly and walked away.

Listening to their conversation, I thought to myself,Well, it has been
over
50 years she's probably forgotten"

But she had not forgotten. She was right.

I went home and pulled out the book my book club is reading --- "Flags of
Our Fathers" by James Bradley. It's all about the battle at Iwo Jima .
I haven't gotten too far in the book. It's tough to read because it's
a
graphic description of the WWII battles in the Pacific.

But right there it was on page 58. Roosevelt's speech to the nation ends
in
"so help us God."

The people who edited out that part of the speech when they engraved it on
the memorial could have fooled me. I was born after the war.! But they
couldn't fool the people who were there. Roosevelt's words are engraved
on
their hearts.

Now I ask: "WHO GAVE THEM THE RIGHT TO CHANGE THE WORDS OF
HISTORY?????????"

Here's a picture I took last time I was in DC:

Be careful what you read, sisko.

I wonder if there could be a better example of Rightwing nitwittery than what this thread provides.

The hordes of little flag-wavers and Jeezus believers are constantly on the look out for something they can pin on some "evil" liberal influence.

It's beyond belief. They have near total domination of all aspects of this society, but let one of them scurry around and find --or even THINK that they have found-- one tiny instance where their precious God-Guns-n-Guts prejudices and superstitions have not being upheld to the letter, and they are filled with rage and indignation, demanding that THEIR worldview and THEIR ideological framework be the dominant one not simply 98% of the time, but 100% of the time.

It's sickening.

Yeah ok. Sisko admitted his error and retracted his statement. I congratulate him for admitting his mistake. No reason to gloat about it FT. :)

HISTORY?????????"

Because we've entered an Era,chock full of selfish, bratty GenXer types
who aren't very keen on studying History, lest of which the blood, sweat
and toil of far greater Generations.
Tim Russert {Meet the Press} wrote a book last year,in memory and titled
after his Father. How great and silent they were.Seldom Bitching and
making huge contribution to both Flag & Country.
Those WWII Vets of my Father's Generation were Great Americans.
Almost to a man.
And the WWI Vets had to endure even far greater pain and discomfort
in order to help forge this Land into THE Greatest Place on Earth.
And now we've got this almost entire Generational GenXer phenom,
thingy widget mess to deal with.Basically a generation of Techno-crats
and Gismo hounds who love to slack the day away on Computers and
enjoying the Good Life {It's Miller Time}.I see em up close on me travails to
the Big City,twiced a week.
They're the ones who sashay around with funny hair and clothes as if
being kOOl is priority numero Uno.
And they almost to a person, have their little quirky Exostential
leanings,as if just itchin to bring Europe and the cafe scene {Starbucks}
to every corner of America.
Basically not a care in the world, besides SATISFYING their daily
fill of Fun stuff to do,eat drink and Be Merry, and ta Hell with
God,Flag & Country.
It's Sad but a part of what Georgy Orwell predicted.

1984 {1949}
" Who controls the past controls the future, who controls the
present controls the past."
-- George Orwell { ne Eric Blair }
