View Full Version : your opinion of rap

this one should get alot of attention. everybody here seems to hate rap except a few people. why do you hate it so much? what makes you think that rap has no talent? espically compared to other kinds of music where there are people that write the song, people that play the music, people that make the beats, does the hair and make up, clothes..blah blah blah...and all you see is the person singing it. with rap..rappers write their own lyrics, produce beats, spend hours in the studio making it sound just right, ...its all them. if you ask me, id say thats pretty tallented! what is your opinion?

I just don't like it - it doesn't speak to me. But then again neither does blues or country western. I do think that most rappers are fairly if not extremely talented, though. I certainly couldn't do it.

I admit to being out of my element when discussing rap music. I believe it is a form of artistic expression and there needs to be talent to succeed. However, rap music in general seems to only want to glorify certain violent and negative aspects of our society. Every rap song i have ever heard (hardcore rap i guess i mean) has lyrics detailing shooting someone, selling drugs or denigrating women. Its almost as if there is nothing in the world for these people but sex, drugs, and violence.(the sex part is fine with me) If you are an adult, i say have fun with your choice of music. However, it seems that the age group most affected are our young children who listen to this stuff.

Most rap I ever hear is about how some guy was shot dead, money stolen, or beat his wife...the other part of the time its about getting on girls and using them for money. Like I said in another post about rap, I'd have more fun wiping my own ass with rusted barbed wire toilet paper than I would listening to a rap song. Besides, anybody can say "yo yo, uh huh, yeah, yo huh, aight yea man, tight yo" 50 thousand times if they wanted to and somehow make sense out of it. I'm more of a rock guy anyway...anything from AC/DC, Boston and Led Zepplin up to KoRn, Soulfly, and others.

And what's with this Snoop Dogg guy doing a Metallica song? I felt like crying when I heard it. Besides, where'd this "izzle" come from at the end of every sentence? I don't think Kindergarten helped him very much.

Ha, Metallica got their just deserts. Those terrible time swinging morons dare claiming the Misfits as an influence.
I hate rap. Wait, no, sorry, I hate any mainstream manufactured or talentless music. Therefore, I like some rap. Some sounds good and is good. I like MC Hammer(gotta love him, It's hammer time), Cameo, Dead Prez, and NWA. Oh, and the Roots, which is a Rock, Blues, Jazz, Rap, Soul group, they are great.

I don't like rap because it promotes violence and most of the rap singers have the smarts of a cow. Some singers are smart and deserve credit but as an overall rap is just tastless garbage.

Old timers might remember "Mrs. Miller" Some folks said she wuz a LOUSY singer... while others said she just got a bad... rap...
(All I know is listenin' ta a couple of her tunes could make yer ears bleed...) :)

Sorry, I don't much care for rap, either, and for the same reasons as some of the others--violence, profanity, treatment of women, etc. But there are some Christian rappers whose lyrics aren't offensive, but I'm just not a big fan of the style. DC Talk had some rap-style songs that were good.
But to each his own.

I like some rap artists, but most of them are crap.
Eminem is good, but when I see and hear Snoop Dogg.....
The lyrics are most of the time not very nice, and the videos; you only see naked ladies shaking their asses around.
It's not my cup of tea.

Rappers are incredibly talented but unfortunetly that does not mean Rap is for everyone. I do not like Rap dipite the talent involved, but i do really like Eminem

The rappers are getting rich from their talent, while you all are moaning. I don't care for rap, but there are a lot of people that do like it, and that's what make it worthwhile to the rappers. It's just a way to make a living, and that's fizzle shizzle. ;)

IMO several rappers are extremely talented, and I appreciate their music. I like Eminem. But, for the most part, what rap music is describing, the gansta culture, the blin blins, the sex/violence, or take pride bein form "the hood" just does not touch my inner plane. I can't connect to it because I have no such background, I can't love it because I am interested in becoming a gansta.

As far as the “talent” part goes, it’s much more difficult to play live instruments than it is to scratch a few records on a DJ system. Also, rap music is spoken, not sung, therefore it doesn’t require a good voice either.
Rap artists write their lyrics, generate their music via a DJ system, and speak the lyrics with the music. Rock groups write their songs, play their music using musical instruments that require lots of practice, sing the songs WHILE playing the music, and usually produce their own records. Any questions?

I mainly listen to meatl, but I will listen to some rap. But I will not listen to anything played on MTV. And these guys trying to mix rap and metal are pathetic. There is nothing sadder than a white guy trying to rap.

I don't like rap, never have and never will. I grew up listening to country, I also love Jimmy Buffet and Dave Mathews. It just seems so distasteful. (There's also another reason I could give but I'd also be jumped on in 5 seconds for being racist...even though this doesn't apply to ALL rappers)

It's just another form of artistic expression.
I don't buy the cd's (I don't buy any cd's) but I can listen to it and in most cases I enjoy it.
It too will pass and who knows what music genre we will be discussing years from now.

wow, ignorance at its best, you must only listen to DMX and Eminem if all you hear about is murder, stealing, and spousal abuse. But again you said it best "Most rap I ever HEAR" listen to a little variety not just eminem, listen to OutKast, Talib Kweli, and a few Jay-Z or Pac records, check out some variety before you diss something, based on the music you stated you listen to I could take a guess and say u listen to white pussy bullshit that centers around pumbling each other in "mosh pits" and bad dancing to loud screaming placed on a track with a slightly revamped version of guitar tracks they stole from black sabbath or another break out artist from the 70's. Oh yea, and that barbed wire comment, come on man, thats nasty, it ut goes to show you what "good ol fashioned white music" does to you, and yea im white, and yea i like rap, along with old school shit like sinatra, santana, elvis, hendrix and shit like that.

You know Toad, you're right about the people that say they don't like rap, but they like Eminem, it has to be because he's white, because his lyrics are really bad.
Anyway, to the ones that say Rap sucks....evidently it doesn't suck too bad because the artists are making millions from it. That's what counts.
I agree with everything you say Toad, except yo bad language. I can't hang with that.

well see here's where i have to say thanks for agreeing, but f u for the eminem comment, I listen to all things, rap, blues, rock, metal, ect, but in a world of hip hop gone awry, im gonna have to say eminem is one of the top lyricists, his raps may not cover as many topics as some, but the topics he does cover are shown very well, he has great imagry and expression some of the people just cant stand up against. While he is definatley not the best lyricist, he is one of the top of the game.
And to all those who have problems with what I say, here's a little expression from me, 2001 style.

I bet he's one of those white guys that act like that when he's around his 1 or 2 friends and then goes home and puts in a John Denver cd.
first off, when it comes to topics such as world news and politics, I do have a vast amount of opinions, whether I choose to voice those opinions depends on my own free will and personally i9 dont think I personally have a background that is rich enough in those topics of discussion, music on the other hand I do, and southernboy, john denver is annoying, but yea i do listen to shit like Sinatra, NSync, and Metallica also, do my friends try to ridicule me? yea but, well it's their faults, they understand after a while just because i person dresses, talks and acts in a certain demeanor doesnt mean he could be shuffled into a category, i act the same around all friends, aside from the level of goofiness I have around others and the amount of temper I hold with some, all depending on them and my feelings towards them and their actions, so lets see if we can have an intelligent conversation where you people prove me wrong on a level which you havent reached yet, if possible. Bitches.

01-26-2004, 07:13 PM

Wow....you're just about as lost as Mr. Shaman. First off, where in any post towards you did I specifically say you were an asshole?
Second, where in any post towards you did I specifically say you were unintelligent? I only said you'd have a hard time posting in any other threads because all you've been able to post so far is a bunch of badmouthing towards us about how "we hate rap, rap sucks" and all that other stupid crap. You easily could have just said you like rap, disagree with our opinions and we would have been just fine.
Third, you hate me because I like a certain musical group that you seem to not like? I sense prejudice here.
Fourth, and this one really taps my head off...why am I being blamed for not liking rap music when there's several others around AFN who think the same way I do? if you're gonna rip on one person, rip on all of them.
no one else is responding to my posts, if they would I would respond, and yea i hate psychopathis records, is it prejudice, in a form yes, but hey we all have some forms of prejudice, mine just seems to be a minor one, towards bad music, fake gangster, born again christians, such as ICP and they're affiliates. Bitches.

01-26-2004, 08:00 PM
I like Zug Izland just because of their style of music, not to whom they are affiliated with. I really don't like ICP either, so there's one thing we can agree on.
I'm saying its prejudice because you don't like ME because I like something YOU don't. I may say I don't like rap, but I don't hate people who like it and i'm not going to go around and rip on people who do, cause that's their opinion and they're entitled to it. Besides, I don't believe in "minor forms of prejudice"...it's either prejudice or not...

many people say rap is not music but just a bunch of words put together and i have to agree with that. But i love rap because of the way the put the lyrics together, and yes many talk about killing and having sex but also many of them are fake. They just talk bunch of noise, but there are true niggas out there and thats what make rap music the best. Many ppl judge ppl that listen to rap music when on the other hand nobody judges ppl for listing to jazz or classical or rock or country. so what is that all bout. there are many time i am being hate on because i listen to rap music, just because i listen to rap music it does not make me a gansta. so yall can say what u want bout rap and hip hop but its the music of today.

I don;t hate rap, I just really don't like most main stream music. Some rap can be good (everyone should listen to the Strrets) but becasue it'a not my favorite genre I hear mostly mainstream crap. I also can't stand songs that have no meaning past something negative, like things that are demeaning to women and violent or crude for no reason. but some of the lyrics are poetry. I really try to give al types of music an equal oppurtunity to impress/disgust me, but some genres just aren't my thing, and I'm definitely more of a rock person than a rap person.

My stand on it is that most of it is degrading to Women in america.
Now a rapper like 50 cent talks abotu stuff that happened in his life, but even he is getting boring. Eminem talks about real issues and things that ppl need to address, as did the legendary Tupac. Now lyrically, rappers like eminem and Tupac, they are VERY lalented, while they might not have great vocabulary, but its VERY emotional. As for composing they're beats that takes ZERO skill, i can do it and so can anyone else. What they do is take one measure and reapeat it...adding a little difference here and there. you want musical tallent? Look at the band TOOL! it took them FIVE WHOLE YEARS to finish ONE album. Their lyrics are the most emotional ive ever heard, but their music speaks even louder! Their lead singer went to WEST POINT ACADEMY (probabaly THE finest school in america) and alot of ppl do not get what they are talking about, but if you do...they are the MOST talented, emotional, time staking group EVER !!!!
