A Chinese court has jailed a farmer for 13 years for trading in state-protected swans and their meat, Xinhua news agency reported Friday.

Zhang Yuelin, 48, from the northern province of Henan, had bought 38 dead swans and one kg of swan meat late last year, the agency said. He was also fined 50,000 yuan ($6,500).

The story "misleads innocent children and distorts their mind and spirit," said Wang Song, an official of the National Anti-piracy and Anti-pornography Working Committee, quoted by the China Daily.
