Literal Detective

All right gentlemen, it seems we are forced to start off “en media res”. This leaves us with no exposition, so save the introductions. Our plot trigger occurred at approximately 11:30 this evening, when several minor characters all remember two distinct points of auditory imagery; the first was an exclamatory statement of distress by the victim, followed by a violent onomatopoeia. Shortly after, a dark figure, which we can now assume to be our antagonist, was seen running into the darkness of the setting. Unfortunately, this is not enough detail to warrant a flashback scene, so we’ll just have to piece it together ourselves. Given the pace of this story so far, and the fact that our hook is a mystery, I’d wager that this case will be plot-driven as opposed to character-driven, but it is still too early to say for sure. Now, despite the lack of expository evidence, we can be assured of several things:

1. There remain several key clues here that, while perhaps may be initially overlooked, will greatly aid us in advancing the plot.
2. The tone of this opening crime scene promises us a complex and intriguing story, undoubtedly involving at least one major plot twist.
3. An extensive characterization of both protagonist and antagonist through the ensuing cat and mouse game, which may reveal an interesting “foil” comparison.
4. Strong underlying themes as to the nature of crime, vengeance, and/or justice.

So, we know where we’re going, but we’re still missing many details. We should be on the look out for some important developments:
1. Complex and powerful metaphors represented in certain objects or characters.
2. An internal conflict within the protagonist which gravely threatens his success.
3. Back stories of major characters revealing their motives and drives, specifically of the protagonist, antagonist, and the mystery of our deceased.

Well boys, it looks like we have our work cut out of us. Let’s get to it.
