I think the Kennedys were the first to figure out the Irish vote. Are you implying that the Irish will vote for any politican as long as they're drunk, the politican and the voter I mean...How rude...

Between 1845-1850 ish, about a million Irish arrived. So many that they stopped taking them and diverted the boats to the St Lawerence.

With counting underway early signs indicate that the ruling Fianna Fail Party
under Taoiseach Bertie Ahern will win, tho not with an overall majority, so some wheelin and dealin will have to be done with either a smaller party or a few Independants.
Probably tomorrow before a clearer pictue emerges.

Haven't they been the ruling party for the last 50+ years?
I can't remember what the name means, though.

Fianna Fail.
pronounced= fay-na foil.
translated=soldiers of destiny.
They are the biggest party in the ROI. Have been in power now for 10 years solid, tho with a minority, usually form a coalition with The Labour Party.
Looks the same again, minority with Labour.
Taoiseach Bertie Ahern is the leader of Fianna Fail.
Ireland uses a PR system.

What political party would Ahern be more closely affiliated with if he was in the States? Does Fianna Fail lean left, right or down the center?
paulc

Like most modern Euro contrys, the ruling Party would see itself as centre left, I guess.
Bertie Ahern has gotton himself anothe 5 years, not surprising as the economy is booming, and when people get money in they're pocket, they're happy.
Not sure who he'll deal with to form a coalition, tho he's ruled out any deal with Sinn Fein,as they're both political enemies,from way back during the civil war,and dealing with the UK would become difficult.
We'll find out this week.

Still no sig of a Government being formed.
The Greens and the 2 PDs 'Progresive Democrats' look like the ones Fianna Fail want to deal with.
