An asteroid discovered just weeks ago has become the most threatening object ever found in space.
A preliminary orbit suggests that 2002NT7 is on an impact course with Earth and could strike the planet on 1 February 2019.

Wow, scared me for a moment, then I read this part "The error in our knowledge of where NT7 will be on 1 February, 2019, is large, several tens of millions of kilometres," he said.
Still, could be on target. Scary shit.

Good news, if it hits Earth we won't have that pesky population problem anymore

If it does hit, the cloud of dust etc. should screen out a lot of sun and thus reduce global warming for a few years.

You might want to check the date on the article you posted. It is several years old. Here is an update from a little later.

I hope so also, but it is usually true that with more observations the orbit becomes better known. The update I linked to is only a couple of weeks more recent than the original story. The rock has continued to be observed, and if it were a problem the story would be front page news.

I remember hearing about this, the hoopla lasted all of like a few days until they realized that it wasn't going to hit.

Sure, it'll be front page news. The day before it hits. The movie Armegeddon comes to mind
OH MY GOD WERE ALL GONNA , um , uh, nevermind.......................
