(05-04) 18:57 PDT VIENNA, Austria (AP) --
In some ways, Hiasl is like any other Viennese: He indulges a weakness for pastry, likes to paint and enjoys chilling out watching TV. But he doesn't care for coffee, and he isn't actually a person — at least not yet.
In a case that could set a global legal precedent for granting basic rights to apes, animal rights advocates are seeking to get the 26-year-old male chimpanzee legally declared a "person."
Hiasl's supporters argue he needs that status to become a legal entity that can receive donations and get a guardian to look out for his interests.
"Our main argument is that Hiasl is a person and has basic legal rights," said Eberhart Theuer, a lawyer leading the challenge on behalf of the Association Against Animal Factories, a Vienna animal rights group.
"We mean the right to life, the right to not be tortured, the right to freedom under certain conditions," Theuer said.

awe, heck! why not!
he watches TV and has a legal team...it's not like they wanted to make him a citizen and let him vote.

This has got to be one of the stupidest activist pushes yet. It's a chimp, not a person.
I can just imagine 100 years later when chimps march on the capital for the right to vote. Stupid monkeys.

When it starts calculating pie and understanding concepts like physics and god I will consider it but until this it is a chimp oh yes and understanding ethics and that it is not ok to throw your feces at people you dont' like.

What this is trying to stir up, I assume, is an accounting to animals rights. Its stupid to declare a chimp a human. It's also inhuman to practice vivisection on them as well.

Sometimes I really can get into giving certain animals more rights than certain human beings. It's a matter of behavior not species.

Hah! I'm going with definition #3 of inhuman - they aren't human so performing inhuman acts on them is perfectly fine! I win!

How about we just kill the chimp so the Viennese find something useful to do?

I am sure that they activist would think it was inhumain to kill this lion too? If chimps roamed the wild randomly killing people I'd be all for shooting them down.

Never! Wien (Vienna) is the birthplace of the Weiner.
If we kill off all those weiners Oscar Mayer will seek vengeance on our families.

Well, if a Chimp can become President of the United States I don't see why they can't have other rights also.
