Everything you didn't want to know about Colony Collapse Disorder
It sounds like the start of a Kurt Vonnegut novel:
Nobody worried all that much about the loss of a few animal species here and there until one day the bees came to their senses and decided to quit producing an unnaturally large surplus of honey for our benefit. One by one, they went on strike and flew off to parts unknown.

honey isn't the reason we need bees, it's for pollination.

Pooh bear is already on life support. They have artificial honey dripping into his fluff through an IV.

I think my kids play a part in this. All summer they catch bees and torture them.

There is a quote often attributed to Einstein, that "If all the bees were to vanish off the face of the globe, mankind would only have four years of life left left. No more bees, no more pollination... no more men."

This recent Bee colapse phenomena is fascinating and also alarming.
I remember reading a Grocery tabloid,about 2 years ago,with a
really HUGE,gross enlargement of a bug.It looked like The most vile
and monstrous Flea, from Outer space. It was an enlarged photo
of what was a Mutant Mite, that actually had developed from Big
City Smog.It was prevalent in only Big City Metropolis and seemingly
thrived on concentrated areas of High pollution.
The thing was a spittin image from a cheapo Grade B Sci-Fi Horror.
It had a large and heavily crusted body with very nasty pinchers
and eating apparatus.
The article said the Government was fully aware of this new
deadly-lookin litte monster bug,but was kinda keeping it under wraps,
due to overexposed hysteria.
Since I'm a Motorcyclist and travel into the big city,on me scoot, about twice a week,i was kinda creeped out about this new environmental air
mite,invading our space.

The mites that infest colonies are part of the problem, but only part. There have been problems with colonies when no mites were present. Another piece of the puzzle may be the spread of cell phones.
