I think it's a great idea, go for it.

I received my associates degree from an online university. I see no problem with it. I would think the bigger problem would be if the opportunity was available and one didn't take advantage of it. We don't all have time to sit in a classroom what with jobs and families. An education is a great thing, use any means necessary to achieve it.

OH it is not for me. I am at the UOP online college course getting a Batchelors degree in Business Administration. It is and online program. It does take alot of disipline and self motiviation to be in class. But since I am a mother of 2 and one on the way and since I have anxiety problems it is optimal for me.

Yes. They have been doing it for years now in NY. It is a great program for those who need it. There they call it a GED which is equivalent to a diploma.

I dropped out of high school because I thought I would be more challenged and have a better social life in college. And indeed I love college. I have many more friends than I ever did in school with people my own age, I enjoy the courses, and by my calculations I will end this semester with a 3.75 GPA (three As and one B.)

I'd hardly compare Imp to a child molester.

As far as the reasons people drop out, I'd say most of them are poor and feel like they need a full time job to survive. And a lot of them feel overwhelmed and feel like they are too stupid for school. Drug-related reasons probably factor in a lot like Mike said, as well as teen pregnancy (for girls and boys, the fathers probably feel the need to drop out and work to support their child). There are probably very few who drop out for the reason I did, but I've met several people at college who are a year older than me or less (still high school age). Some of them say they dropped out like I did, and some of them are in a program called the Gateway Program which allows high school students in my county to take some classes at community college and only have a few at high school.

I use to hang around with the Seniors when I was a Sophomore and I found my classmates (especially the girls) to be "silly" (I think that's the best word). I then ended up getting a job and hanging around the older group there too (some my age but those are still my best friends 23 years later. Or was it different reasons?

I think that's what it was Abbey. Half the reason for going to college early was the desire for a social life. I have never gotten along with people my age, ESPECIALLY the girls. High school girls have a propensity for drama and forming cliques. That's not to say that none of this goes on in college, but it's much less pronounced. Groups are less rigid.

Equally important though were the academics. I love my classes in college, they are not too easy and not too hard. I suppose I could've just taken a bunch of AP classes in high school but I think that would've been harder; my high school friends all do much more homework than I do, as well as sitting in school all day five days a week. I like to have class sometimes but not too often, and I don't have too much unnecessary homework. We write papers and do reading but there aren't many small assignments that take up time without much point. In math I have no homework at all - well the homework is assigned but it's optional and I only do it if there is something I don't understand. We have a quiz every day in math so we know how we're doing.

Yeah, OK, I think I remember a previous post where you said "north american" in Spanish. It's Spanish there right? What brought you two to Costa Rica?

Yeah, they speak Spanish. My mom decided that she wanted to run off to Costa Rica and live on the beach and she brought my brother and me with her. We didn't really have any other options at that time since my dad and step-mom had just gotten separated and my dad was having some drug problems.

That's something else. Was she working? How did you live? Just taking off like that. I don't mean to sound so nosy but it is interesting.

Well she wasn't really working. She and her boyfriend at the time were planning on buying some land and building a yoga retreat center or something (my mom is a certified yoga instructor). Then after her boyfriend turned out to be a psycho we stayed there and basically lived off the child support money from my dad. It wasn't much ($700 a month) but definitely enough to live a third world country, we just couldn't live at U.S. standards.

Yeah, well, it was an interesting idea at any rate. How long did you stay? Did you mind it?

We were there for almost two years. I liked it and all. It was hard to be poor but I've never been rich so it wasn't any different than any time before that with my mother. I liked the weather and the partying but there was nothing good for me there. Great place to visit, not the best to live.

As an outsider I would say that it sounds like a neat experience but that IS as an outsider. So you're fluent in Spanish then? Did you pick it up there or had you started learning before hand?

I'm pretty fluent. Picked it up there.
