At 6 am Monday, N. Ireland joined the rest of Ireland, becoming a smoke free island. No smoking in public places:

To be honest, smoking sucks, Im glad that in Florida its illegal to smoke in public places. However, if your in a place that serves alcohol, I think it should still be ok. Like yeah, no smoking in pubs and bars is kinda stupid. Hell even I will light up a cig or two while im drinking, and I hate smoking. Ive never smoked a cig while sober.

Some habits harm only the individual. If you drink you are harming only yourself unless you get into your car and drive and there are laws against that. If you overeat you are only harming yourself.

If you smoke, however, you are not only harming yourself, you are harming other, innocent people. I am all in favor of banning smoking in public places including pubs and bars.

If your in a bar drinking in the first place, your hurting yourself, as you say, so why not let smokers in there as well? Or do you only want the drinkers to hurt themselves through drinking? I mean if your in a bar and dont like smokers, then you can drink at your house lol.

Yourself is the key word, Phyrex. Everyone has the right to hurt themself. When you smoke you are hurting others and no one has the right to do that.

Yeah I see your point I suppose. Second hand smoke sucks. Alcohol is however all on you. I havent drank in well over a month actually, Im kinda proud of myself lol.

I feel more strongly about this than most since I contracted cancer because of smoking. I do not allow smoking on my property or in my cars.

Froggie,
You should move to PV Estates in California. It's a "No Smoking" city. It's illegal to smoke anywhere, except inside your own home. Get caught outdoors or anywhere but your home, and its a 200 dollar fine.

Frogger

Yeah, but then I'd have to live in California. Don't know if it's worth it.

They passed that law about a year ago in NY. Unfortunately, a lot of small town bars went belly up because people started staying home to drink and smoke.
Although the mayors bar had a smoking room added on with an exhaust fan, which if I had owned a bar there~I would have added a 'no smoking room' with an exhaust fan instead, many more people who do go out and drink, do smoke.

Here in Canada we have a non smoking bylaw in effect for roughly 5 years.
Some business slowed down a bit but others thrived. It is a growing curve and face it, It is the way everyone is going so why fight it.

Well, some habits die hard, I've been smoking since I was 7. I am respectful to others who don't smoke but I don't want anyone telling me what they think I can or can't/should or shouldn't be doing.
Ironically, when I lived in NY, we used to go to Canada to buy our cigarettes because they were cheaper then here in the states. Yup, your govt. made money off merkins by the fist fulls, bet ya didn't hear any complaints about that though. eh?

I do not smoke, but I also beleave that you should have the right to have a smoke when you are having a drink! Owners should have the right to say this is a smoking bar or not and then the patrons have the right to go in and breath second hand smoke with there drink or find a non smoking bar. (pub in this case) whats next the goverment going to tell you what type of toilet papper you can wipe your ass with. oh im sorry you cant use TP its made of trees and that will contribute to global warming looks like ya have to use a rock until they ban them!!!!

This second hand smoke argument is pure baloney. Nobody ever died from breathing somebody elses smoke in a bar. Maybe it made their clothes smell, but that's about it. Bars are not exactly a health spa - people consume the drug alcohol, what difference is there if people smoke. Nobody forces anybody into a bar.

Amen, Drew!

Here in this town, they passed the ban on smoking anywhere food is served, so the bars are still safe. I agree that bars are smoky, but there are bars that are non-smoking, too. If the second-hand smoke bothers a person, they can go to the non-smoking bars, or restaurants, as it may be. I'm like Imp, I smoke, but I try to be considerate of those who do not. A lot of it just boils down to common courtesy.

You're right. They do sometimes get pretty nasty about all of it. It's okay...I'll just step outside and have a cigarette, or sit in my own back yard.

Sorry love but I don't feel bad.
Cigarette smoke is yucking and kissing a man/women that smokes it like kissing and ass tray.. sorry
Non smoker all the way..Tried smoking once.
Had to fly to Winnipeg by myself at 13 and had a lay over in Vancouver international airport. Was so scared so bought a package of players light and sat down and smoked the whole package waiting 2 hours for my flight. I was some green and was pretty sick. Cured me really fast. Never looked back only the occasional recreational type smokes. hehe

When people say to me, "Mind if I smoke?", I look at them and say, "Mind if I fart? I find a good fart relaxes me and besides it's my life."

If they complain that farts smell and farting in public is rude I remind them that many people feel the same about smoking.

beer, fried food, and the barfly they've been hitting on is the village bicycle, second hand smoke should be the least of their concerns.
