Here's some great commentary by Lou Dobbs (above is the link):

"The Bush administration and the leadership of the Democratic Party are preparing to take another legislative leap at imposing a massive illegal alien amnesty on American citizens.

And the mainstream media is complicit in advancing this thinly veiled blanket amnesty. Instead of asking and answering important questions about why our immigration laws aren't being enforced and why we're permitting pervasive document fraud, the national media seems hell-bent on trying to obfuscate the issue, shamelessly playing with language, equating legal immigration with illegal immigration while obviously trying to preserve the illusion of objectivity.

Too often, the language of the national media describes illegal immigration as "migration" and illegal aliens as "undocumented immigrants," even though many of them have lots of documents, most of which are fraudulent or stolen. Some media outlets have taken to calling illegal aliens "entrants." Whether such language is meant to engender sympathy or to intentionally blur the distinction between legal and illegal, the mainstream media is taking sides in this debate.

The Arizona Republic, for example, used "undocumented immigrant" more than 80 times in 36 separate stories in the past month alone; the term appeared as many as 12 times in one article on "migration," according to our Lexis-Nexis search. At the same time, "illegal alien" appeared a total of only nine times during that span, with seven of the references coming from readers' opinions, one from a quotation and one from an editorial.

The mainstream media reports as if America would no longer be a welcoming nation if we stopped illegal immigration. Nothing could be further from the truth. Why does the national media conveniently and routinely neglect to report that the United States brings in more lawful immigrants than the countries of the rest of the world combined? Each year, we accept 2 million immigrants legally. We give a million legal immigrants permanent residency every year. We bestow citizenship on 700,000 people a year and provide almost half a million work-related visas a year.

Illegal immigration, in fact, has the potential to change the course of American history: Demographers at the Brookings Institution and the Population Reference Bureau paint a troubling picture of the future of our democracy. As more illegal aliens cross our borders and settle in large states like California, Texas and Florida, congressional seats will be redistributed to these bigger states following each decennial Census. States with low levels of immigration will ultimately lose seats as a result. Unfortunately for American citizens, this seismic shift in political representation will be decided by noncitizens that cannot vote.

Congress will soon take up so-called comprehensive immigration reform, and a bipartisan House bill would probably admit 400,000 guest workers a year. And since any plan calling for eventual legalization would include family members who live outside the United States, the legislation would open our borders to tens of millions of people. The Heritage Foundation's Robert Rector estimated that the 2006 version of the McCain-Kennedy bill would have added an additional 66 million immigrants over the next 20 years. The bill may change, but that estimate has yet to be refuted.

There's no question this type of mass immigration would have a calamitous effect on working citizens and their families. Professor Carol Swain, professor of law and political science at Vanderbilt University and author of "Debating Immigration," would like to see more people speak up for the sectors of society most affected by illegal immigration.

"How many African-American leaders have you seen come out and address the impact that high levels of illegal immigration [are] having in the communities when it comes to jobs, when it comes to education, when it comes to health care?" she asked. "And often, these low-skilled, low-wage workers compete in the same sectors for jobs."

Let's have a vigorous open debate on illegal immigration in this country, and let's begin with the facts. Estimates of illegal aliens in this country range from 12 million to 20 million people. Why doesn't our government know how many there are?

Shouldn't this Congress and this president at least recognize that the industries in which illegal aliens are employed in the greatest percentages also are suffering the largest wage declines? And shouldn't there be an economic impact statement researched and delivered to this Congress, this president and the rest of us before any legislation granting amnesty is even considered?

Shouldn't we first bring the facts of illegal immigration out of the shadows?"

Yes Lou Dobbs is great and for all other easy to target me as a liberal this is one of the reasons I am not a liberal and that is because I am totally against illegal immigration. I am sorry the mexicans have it bad but maybe they need to stand up and topple their government and riot and all that jazz to get things changed but to come to our borders and cheat to get citizenship while other immigrants take thier turn in line is just unacceptable. Those legal immigrants bust thier ass to get citizenship here and it should not be demeaned by cheaters.
I against any amnesty for illegal immigrants.

May I ask how you could go about deporting at least 12 million people.

My first suggestion would be to hire illegals to drive the buses

They got themselves here they can march themselves right back over the border at gunpoint if necessary.

Don't give them work, money or welfare and they will leave. They are not stupid.
They should not be rewarded for breaking the law. Them getting welfare, social programs, credit cards, housing, work and the stuff is encouraging them and the only reason people are letting them do it is because they are cheap slave labor. They are willing to work what the Americans know better to work for.

It is proven in many packing companies that used to pay workers 15 dollars and hour now pay 7 dollars and hour and hire mostly immigrants because they will work for nothing.

It is destroying the middle class.

Im not disputing that wages are greatly affected by illegals, it happens here also.I would imagine a large percentage of illegals in America flew into the country, its not as simple as 'marching them to the border'. Iy would take years to deport all these people, and the logistics would be on the scale of D Day, in that time, another x amount of millions would have overstayed they're visas, so your back to square one.

Illegals are a slave class in America. They work and pay taxes but cannot collect benefits.

The only think keeping them peaceful is the fact that their children are educated and are citizens.

It amazes me that people can't see the good deal the States is getting because of their bigotry and fear of foreigners.

Oh no.. this is not a fear of foreigners. I have no problem with immigrants. I have a problem with "illegal" immigrants.

They do get welfare such as medicaid.
I have a problem because it is unfair for the legal ones to do the right thing and wait in line while another man just jumps the fence and gets in free.

I have no problem with and ethincal diversity in America.

"illegal" is the key word here. They broke the law and should be punished for it.
Now if they want to let them stay here and they each have to pay like a 8,000 dollar fine or something I am kewl with that but no punishment at all is irresponsible.
I also think the MExican government should be fined for each illegal immigrant too. It is thier citizens and ther responsibility.

Sorry Thislin but you're wrong and Warrior is right.

You keep trying to frame it in racist terms, accusing those against illegal immigration of being racists. It has nothing to do with race and everything to do with legal vs illegal immigration.

I look at the simple fact that America is a nation of immigrants and that immigration is a positive not a negative. The plusses for the nation so outweight the negatives to make the argument a joke.

Then I look at all the horrible things people like you say about immigrants. I conclude that prejudice is behind it. That is bigotry. It is also selfishness and stupid anti-American (anti what America stands for) nativism.

Have I made any racial comments about the illegal immigrants? Has anyone else?

You are a typical liberal who uses the argument that if we don't kowtow to illegality we are somehow racist. If we are against illegal immigrants we hate Spanish speakers. If we are against crime we hate blacks. In your world it is either give in to the lawbreakers or you are a bigot.

The first step would be to shut down illegal aliens coming over the border. THAT is my immediate concern, to stem the tide of illegals and let everyone know that the free ride is over, dammit.

AFTER that, then we can start deciding what to do with all the illegal aliens residing here in the U.S. IF they are willing to work hard, learn the language, go through the citizenship process and swear alliegance to America, then maybe something can be worked out. The people who have started yapping that the U.S. "stole" the Southwest and all the other garbage can find themselves back in Mexico, dammit.

Illegals are a slave class in America. They work and pay taxes but cannot collect benefits.

Actually, they do get free hospital care, to the point where several emergency rooms near the Mexican border have been forced out of business. California has mandated that illegal aliens have the right to the same social benefits that American citizens are entitled to, I believe the same is true in Massachusetts. There has been a couple proposals in at least one state allowing illegal aliens to VOTE. I wouldn't go so far as to say that illegal aliens are a "slave class," dammit.

It amazes me that people can't see the good deal the States is getting because of their bigotry and fear of foreigners.

I'd have no problem with the Mexicans were coming here legally, were learning our language, WANTED to be American citizens and all that. The problem we have is that many of the illegal aliens aren't doing any of the things I've listed. I've already posted a link to a riot the illegals have had and Michelle Malkin has been documenting the problems of illegal immigration. Google Michelle Malkin and you'll soon be digging up my views on illegal aliens, dammit.
