Nah, reprimanded sure, but firing seems excessive.

Fired, for what? He expressed an opinion which I feel is valid. People need to put things in perspective and not emotionally masterbate.
Our society jacks off on emotion. They need to get a grip.

Reprimanded for what? His perspective is quite correct to me.

They should fire whoever fired him, and give him his job back.

Good thing you agreed. Otherwise I would wonder if those purple bunny thongs were affecting your rational process. :p

He should not have been fired, or even censured.

Putting it in perspective is not a problem. The acting out part, with no real purpose mind you, was very insensitive. I think he should be reprimanded for that, not fired though.

This is quite similar to making denial of the holocaust a criminal offense in Europe and firing Don Imus for a tasteless joke. Our basic freedom of speech is quickly being eroded in the name of political correctness.
Saying they will not tolerate anyone making light of the tragedy at Virginia Tech is far more scary than anything the professor said.

What exactly did the guy say?
In my college classes, we've spoke at length about different issues regarding last Monday. I've heard a wide array of viewpoints.

The class was talking about the Virginia Tech shootings. The teacher pointed out that while horrid it paled in comparison with the number of deaths occuring daily. He then pointed a marker at various students, said bang, and symbolically killed them. He had pre-arranged for another student to stand up and 'shoot him' with a marker, thereby ending his killing spree.
He was trying to show that if another student had been armed perhaps fewer students and faculty would have been killed.
He was fired for the crime of trivializing or making light of the Virginia Tech tragedy.

I think because of the Virginia tech shooting being so fresh in everyone minds that it made this act a bit more heated. I have professors that taught with actions and drama.. They were some of the best teachers.
Should he be fired, NO, Reprimanded but even then, he did nothing wrong. He reenacted something to express a point not promote a gun usage issue.
He sounds like a decent teach who has a passion for his job and getting down to stuff that will stimulate the kids to learn.

At your job right now, if were to say somethingthe "company" deems wrong you will be fired. If you want to open debate that is what you do you open debate not make it your personal time to air your views. College is not about hearing a teacher views it is about getting you to think in and out of the box. He could have brought up the topic and let the students go from there.

So then you think he SHOULD be fired?
I have been to college and believe me, I learned more from my professor about his personal experiences and views than turning to page 567 and reading about someone else's personal experiences and views. At least we got to discuss it with the person who actually HAD the experience.
Also I believe the way debates are opened is by one person offering their views and someone else responding to it with their own.
