Story Highlights• Lawmakers change bill that would require public schools to teach Bible classes
• Decided to make the classes optional
• Critics feared class would be more religious than historical

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- A plan to require public schools to teach classes with the Bible as a textbook was changed by a Texas legislative panel to make such classes optional instead.

The House Public Education Committee approved the modified bill Thursday, drawing praise from critics who feared mandatory Bible courses would be more religious than academic.

"I think the committee got the message that families and churches don't want the government to tell our children what to believe about the Bible," said Kathy Miller, president of the Texas Freedom Network.

The original bill by Republican state Rep. Warren Chisum would have required schools to offer Bible courses as an elective. He argued the Bible would be used for its historical value.

About two dozen Texas high schools already offer Bible courses as electives. Supporters said the legislation would make schools more confident about offering them.

then again it would be fun to be in that class. I could cause all kinds of problems.

Gee, you want to be a troll in real life just like you're a troll on the internet.

You're right, it's a good thing it failed. It's kinda scary though that they would even consider it in the first place.

Right-o.

And hey!...they could also make use of it as an authoritative science text.

The kiddies could learn about how pi equals 3.00, how harpies and unicorns exist, how donkeys have the capability for human speech, how there could be a flood that covered Mt. Everest yet the water "drained" away somewhere, how it is feasible for the to Earth stop turning and begin again 3 hours later and how some guy made a sea 'divide' in two.

In the trenchant words of Gore Vidal --"".....as if that loony text had anything useful to say about anything, except perhaps the inadvisability of eating shellfish in the Jerusalem area.""

ROTFL.

Actually I'm taking a class at my college next semester called "The Bible as Literature" that looks at the Bible from a literary and somewhat historical standpoint. I think it'll be really interesting.

That does sound interesting. I don't see any problem with classes like that at the college level.

Yes I completely agree here. What exactly is historical about the bible? seriously.

Metaphor and symbology aside, there is actually a great deal of historicity to be gleaned from the bible.

but how do make sure that fact is seperated from metaphor when teaching the class. I mean jesus claiming to be god is not a fact and parting the sea is not a fact.. ect...
Who is suppose to tell what is fact and metaphor

I would think that a class about the historicity of the bible would actually require minimal use of the bible text itself. There is archeology and other avenues that would do the job.
