BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany's celebrity polar bear cub Knut has received an anonymous death threat, causing alarm at Berlin Zoo on Thursday and prompting heightened security.

Top-selling Bild newspaper said the zoo had received a hand-written fax from a suspected animal hater with the words: "Knut is dead! Thursday midday."

But that deadline came and went safely for media star Knut, who has been on newspaper front pages around Germany and the world for weeks. "He is safe and in good spirits," said zoo official Ragnar Kuehne after the time had passed.

how could so many ppl hate a face like this? (http://today.reuters.com/news/articlenews.aspx?type=oddlyEnoughNews&storyID=2007-04-19T162138Z_01_KUA944455_RTRUKOC_0_US-GERMANY-POLARBEAR-ODD.xml&pageNumber=0&imageid=&cap=&sz=13&WTModLoc=NewsArt-C1-ArticlePage2)

Probably one of those animal lovers who think that if left in the wild Knut would have died when his mother perished, so he must be killed now. Don't let those types anywhere near human orphans.

You want to know what really happened?

This story was first reported by a german newspaper that is notorious for telling half-truths. What actually occured is that the zoo had a previous polar bear cub. It mother rejected it so the zoo deemed that the cub should die 'as it would in the wild'. Animal right people protested this decision to no avail. Then they have this case with another polar bear cub. The zoo announced they would take care of it and the animal right groups said 'shouldn't you let it die like the last one?'.

You really should be more suspicious about stories which claim "animal rights activist demand death of aminals" on its face it absurb and contradictory. I thought is was BS immediatly upon hearing it and so researched it more.
