Well SUVs seem to be coming under attack again. I was just wondering those of you who oppose SUVs do you oppose car racing or any gasoline engine type racing. Also how many times have you gone somewhere just for the heck of it. When is the last time you went to a fun park? Now for the big question What is your real beef with the SUV? Jealousy because you can't own one, or maybe your afraid to drive one, hmmmm seems like people that b***h about SUVs really don't have a B***H at all. Unless they are living in a cave with no electric, phone, etc...

I've been waiting for a good SUV thread. Fire away, liberals!

Get 'em, mad dog. I've owned an SUV, long before they were ever called by that name. Bought a '75 Blazer brand new when I came back from overseas - just had to buy it. Had a Jeep CJ for a while too. While pickup trucks seem to be viewed differently by the liberals, they're the original SUV's. In the United States, more pickups are sold than anything else.

The funny thing is that you take some of these SUVs and they get just as good if not better gas milage then some of the cars (comparing 6cyl).
Es I've always thought that was funny, Joe can drive a truck all day long but as soon as he goes and gets into his SUV he is an a-hole gas waster. The truck is a big old V8 and the SUV is a 6cyl.

My wife has a Honda CR-V, which officially is an SUV although in reality it's a tall Civic with 4wd. I'm thoroughly convinced that the people that complain about SUVs ruining the environment really have some other motive, whether they realize it or not. I think they either hate SUV drivers (I'll admit that alot of them drive with their head up their ass) or it's a class envy sort of thing. But I'm sure that conversion vans probably get worse gas mileage than SUVs, a lot of sports cars are just as bad, pickups are just as bad. But like you pointed out, they only pick on SUVs.

Take a good look at that Honda your spouse drives. Is there a spare tire hanging on the back? You may want to relegate that tire & wheel to the inside of the vehicle. During recent crash tests of baby SUV's the "bumper-bashers" did considerable damage to the rears thanks to those tires hanging there. The tire sticks out beyond the bumper & takes the brunt of the impact.
There probably is a lot of envy involved in the bad publicity SUVs receive. A good many of them cost over $40K, some more than twice that amount. A good many of them get rotten gas mileage, especially the bigger ones. Merely having a V6 does not mean great gas mileage. On one hand, I understand the detractor's sentiments, on the other, to hell with them.

The problem is that the "bumper" is just for show. I'd rather sacrifice the door than the body. Still it's a sucky choice to have to make.

well yes, indeed i do oppose car racing, it's stupid.
when i go places "just for the heck of it," i walk. or take public transportation.
i don't really like "fun parks" either. i don't see what they have to do with SUV's, they just rub me the wrong way.
here is my b***h about SUV's. people complain about our dependence on foreign oil and say therefore that we must drill in the alaskan wildlife refuge. but take the hummer, which makes ten mpg! its a f***ing TANK!!! we wouldn't even have such a huge dependence on foreign oil if americans didn't crave humongous gas-guzzlign SUV's. also, don't tell me that people absolutely NEED SUV's to go driving out in the rugged wilderness. if i had a dime for every SUV i saw on the new york city streets, i could be just like gov. arnold and buy FOUR hummers! you sure need a big, powerful SUV to navigate the rough terrain of downtown brooklyn!

Rollover, SUV lovers, and let ME inta this discussion, too! Are those things... safe? And can they match the miles per galleon Chris Columbus got? Too be sure, maybe Chris wouldn't have gotten so LOST if there'd been a gas station around ta ask directions at, but, hey, okay then, whattabout gasoline powered pogo sticks??? I mean think outta the BOX people!!!
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna walk (NOT drive) ta the livin' room and check out a really cool TV show about jet packs...
Toodles, my good fellows... (Ya smokin' that ink pen yet, mad dog???)

That works great in Brooklyn. Not quite as easy for most of us.

Here's my bitch about people that hate SUVs: why don't you complain about all of the other gas-wasting vehicles - sports cars and pickups and conversion vans and yes, even minivans? Why just SUVs?

I complain about all gas-guzzlers. However, I endorse the anti-SUV movement because SUVs represent the typical luxurious waste at the expense of the environment. That is, other types of vehicles with low gas mileage, from what I've gathered over the course of my life, are more likely to serve practical purposes. An obvious example is the 16-wheeler. They're used for the necessary transportation of goods. A less obvious example is the minivan, which is typically purchased to transport large families. SUVs, on the other hand, are primarily purchased today to serve as a status symbol or conform to a trend or perhaps because they are "safe" (which is a whole new beef I have).

Yeh, that bus running around with 2-3 passengers is a real save. How about the tractor trailer that has to haul one box that weighs 20lbs 300 miles, happens all the time. Why can't a big family use a 6 cylinder SUV instead of a 6 cylinder van?

yes, but do the "most of us" necessarily need an SUV to get to wherever we want to go? for how many people is having an SUV really a matter of necessity?
also, i stick strongly to my case against people who drive SUV's in the cities. do you know how much valuable parking space those things take up? it's rediculous.

Who cares if it's a necessity? I don't hear anyone complaining about the numbers of Cadillacs or Lincolns solld. Is anyone bitching about all the Mercedes, BMW's, and Audi's sold here? Those who buy those things new not only pay a luxury tax if the sticker is over $40K, but most of them pay a gas guzzler's tax as well. Just imagine how many of those Mercedes drivers actually "need" a $100, 000 automobile. It's all a matter of "wanna". I wanna drive an SUV. I wanna drive a 600 SL. That Ferrari you lust after is a gas guzzler too!

well, i can bitch about that too, if you want. i just hate it in general when people spend large amounts of money on things they don't need. it's wasteful, and i would rather use it for a more worthy cause. i'm not saying that you can never buy anything for yourself, but spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on luxury items isn't the way i plan to live my life...

Almost all of the SUVs I see have families in them, although I'll grant you the Hummer, which usually has a 50 year old guy with a cigar hanging out of his mouth. And besides, SUVs can do things minivans can't (or can't do as well), like tow trailers and plow through snow.
What really irritates me are the Hollywood types that have gigantic houses that use more energy to heat and cool in a year than a Hummer uses in it's lifetime. Then they show up at the Oscars in a Toyota Prius and pretend that they're green.

I'm not saying any of those examples are right. I'm against anything that wastes energy. I have no problem with a big family using 6-cylinder SUV. That's just not why SUVs are popular. SUVs, unlike minivans, are popular because of trendiness, not because people want to haul their families around.

Fair enough around me the folks that have the SUVs need them snow, back roads, kids, etc... I do understand about b***hing about them were they are not needed, BUT b***h about all gas hogs. One other thing those that drive them into the city maybe they have them because that is all they could afford to take there family of 6 1/2 up to there home in the country. Ya know Maybe they can't afford 2 cars but they still live in a hard too reach place, oh well just a thought.
sputnik

wait wait. 6 1/2?
also, i see hundreds. EVERY DAY. i am not exaggerating. i swear. plus all the sports cars that you want me to bitch about too....wait why do you need ME to bitch about them? why don't you just do it yourself?
also, its hard to deny that people buy SUV's as a status symbol. status cars are an american tradition...also thier ad campaign majorly caters to the fact that people want to feel bigger, to feel better than their fellow humans. for example, i once saw a hummer ad in a magazine, in the style of a cartoon. the caption was , "teach those taxi-drivers a lesson." the driver of the hummer wore a kinda evil expression, and the surrounding taxi drivers were cowering in fear of the humongous tank of a car in their mist.
my point is that, if people who drove SUV's as a status symbol, or merely because they can afford to were a minority, then why do so many ads cater to these people?

What do you suggest they spend their money on, if not themselves?
