I don't know who did it, but somebody made a "love ballad" version of The Bay City Rollers' "Saturday Night". Saturday night's alright, and if it isn't we can check our calendars and find one that is. Ugh!

Dream On is one of the greatest classic rock songs ever written. Dio and Malmsteen's cover is not.
Some shitty band covered one of Phil Collin's best songs, In the Air Tonight, and it made my ears bleed. I also recently heard some awful cover of Bob Seger's Turn the Page.

Probably true, but Dream On is a good song too.
As for bad remakes, can't think of any because I don't listen to remakes :P

Well, I guess Aerosmith isn't really horrid. They're just not very good, IMO...I've never cared for them much--too much repitition in their songs, and I can't stand Steven Tyler's caterwauling and sorry attempts to hit those high notes.
My god, you should have heard him when he "sang" the National Anthem at the Indy 500 a few years ago. Multiply the worst version of this song by several billion and that's what it sounded like. I was hoping Arie Luyendyk or Michael Andretti would start their engines early and blast Steven's eardrums into outer space, but no such luck.
Ahhhh, when they start engines at the 500. Now THAT, folks, is music.

Sampling is evil incarnate. If you can't come up with the stupid melodies or hooks yourself, DON'T STEAL FROM THOSE WHO DID!!!!!!!!! GODDAMMITT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And no I don't care if they did pay royalties for it, to me it's still stealing.

come on Metallica is not scum just because they wanted what was rightfully theirs. Do you think it is ok to go into a store and just take a CD without paying for it? I like their version of "Turn the Page" too.

Exactly! I don't think it's a big deal that some sites make you pay to download music. Most of the time it's only like a buck a song to do so. That's cheaper than buying the whole CD only to find out you like only 1 song.
I like their version of "Turn the Page" too.
I can't remember where I read it but Bob Seger was pretty pleased with it too.

I actually like Metallica. I just didn't like the idea of them covering one of Seger's signature songs.
FWIW: I'm a big Seger fan so that probably plays into it too :D

On the subject of Metallica...
They are one of the most influential bands ever. They were the driving force of the anti-hair band movement through the 80's. Their straying from straight 4/4 time signature and song structure along with massive guitar creativity along with short tangent bursts away from the beat are legendary. While people want to say Nirvana kicked hair bands out the door, that may be, but Metallica picked them up and dragged them all the way TO the door.
With that being said, their view on music IS elitist. While I hate Bob Dylan, he said a great quote when asked about the whole "pay for music" phenomenon. He replied "why would anyone pay for my music? It ain't worth nothin"... This demonstrates that a musician makes music because it bleeds from his soul, that they cannot possibly NOT create these songs that are in them. Metallica thought that their music as worth something, and I can't disagree with them more.
Metallica had 2 careers it seems. One as an anti-pop culture heavy metal society, and then one as a more conservative song structure, branded, and fulller style in the late 80's early 90's. I am one of the few Metallica fans who actually enjoyed the "Black" and "Load" CD's more than their earlier works. Even though the earlier stuff was way more influential on music and creative as a whole, I like that Metallica began to stray from an all anger, all hate style. Songs like "Hero of the Day" gave me hope to a possible future more uplifting album. That was killed and crushed by their release of "St. Anger", which was an uncreative and obvious attempt to get reacquainted with their early days, which were well behind them.
As for Bob Seger's Turn the Page, I can understand that your like of Seger can taint your view, and you have every right to think Metallica didn't do a good job of the song. You just have a different perspective. I don't know Seger, I don't know where the song "came from". All I know is that Metallica didn't try to BE Seger, they took the song and made it their own in their own style. I would imagine the song garnered more interest in Bob Seger, but that doesn't warrant automatically liking them.
