I really dig it that Madonna smokes cigarettes.
It's kind of her way of saying, "Yeah, I'm a mommy and an international pop sensation, but I'm also trying to watch my weight. The nicotine really helps me keep the pounds off."
I admire her for her political incorrectness.

Shame on you Sparq ... in some places, one might hear: "keep up that kind of talk & you'll get your mouth washed out with soap" ... but in your case: "scrub your hands with comet cleanser".

Isn't it funny though?
Smoking has become just about the last politically-incorrect non-verbal social statement.
The ultimate f%@k you.
(Tattoos aren't even that rebellious a statement anymore; everybody and their 10 year old little sister has one, so what's the point?)
I don't even smoke (and never have), but every now and then I'll bum a cigarette from somebody in the right social setting and fire it up. Outdoors of course. And while drinking, natch.
Usually when there's somebody nearby that I'm trying to annoy.
The conversation normally goes like this:
"Sparky, you don't smoke, do you?"
"Me? No."
"So why are you smoking that cigarette? I've never seen you smoke a cigarette?"
"Ah, every now and then I want to tease the lung cancer Gods. Sort of like driving without your seatbelt on the freeway. Haven't you ever done that either?"
"NO. And I think you ought to put that out. You know that Suzie over there has quit smoking for health reasons. It's really insensitive of you to be smoking right in front of her like that."
"Ah, f%#k her. She can bum her own cigarette if she wants one bad enough."
"Aaaghh!!" (storms off)
So anyway, back to Ms. Cicconne-Ritchie;
This thread kind of got started as a lark, was then followed by an apology for said lark, and now I'm just trying to fill some space.
I don't really care to be involved with Madonna anymore, but in a strange way, I kind of miss her every now and then.
But only when I'm drinking and bumming a cigarette.
How funny is that?

Response to Msg. 13 by Sparky
Good story, and effective dialogue writing, but I think fiction. Either that or you are a lot braver in social situations than anyone I know.
The Vietnamese government use to make a lot of money from its cigarette monopoly, although there was a vigorous black market in American brands.
It was really difficult for a non-smoker like myself to function in that society then, since people would always offer you a cigarette and you could not decline the way you can in America (it all has to do with face and karma).
At some Central Committee meeting or another they seem to have decided this was not good, revenue from the monopoly or not. About three years ago all of a sudden the monopoly went out of business and foreign cigarettes could be imported freely, but any sort of promotion or advertising was banned.
At the same time they began a propaganda campaign against smoking--posters of skeletons and "hungry ghosts" smoking cigarettes--that sort of thing. I would guess the smoking rate went from nearly all men to maybe thirty percent (women had never smoked much).
Now smoking in public is tabu--there is a lot of bad face in being seen smoking--and people offer you chewing gum rather than a cigarette. I don't know that that is an improvement.
In Vietnam, if you want to persuade the local cop that you are a criminal, have a tattoo (each neighborhood has a local "constable" who is one's first contact with police). In Vietnam criminals have them and other people don't. I don't really understand this, but that seems to be some sort of rule.

You really are becoming quite the broken record sir.
Is it your intent to enlighten & educate, or to merely act as an irritant?
Because the more you presume to attempt the former, the more you actually do the latter.
Take a day or two off will you?
Take the kids for a walk in the park.
Treat the missus to a dinner and a movie.
Or, give that garage a long-overdue cleaning out.
If you work hard enough, you just might be able to get the minivan in there.
(Vehicles depreciate a whole lot less when they are kept inside, and protected from the elements.)
Good luck with all that, ok?
And please let us know in a few days how everythings going.
Hugs and kisses.

Man, it’s one new adventure after another down here in the southland.
It's been unseasonably warm, and my dogs have had a hell of a time with the heat. The dachshund has become particularly ‘gamey’, as a matter of fact.
My wife heard from a neighbor a few weeks ago that the best way to wash a dog is to use douche solution. (It’s supposed to be good for their coat.) So, I went to the grocery store and bought a three pack of Summer’s Eve.
Anyway, I brought Rudi the dachshund in from playing with the neighbor dogs yesterday afternoon, and he was mighty dusty and overheated. The missus threw his little ass in the bathtub, and commenced to pouring the douche stuff all over him. He did not like it one bit. Looked at her like she was going to ruin his reputation or something. He hacked and wheezed at first, and then settled down when she rinsed him off with clear water. Toweled-him off and he was good to go.
Sure enough, after he ran around the house (and did victory rolls across the living room carpet to dry himself off some more) you could tell a difference. He smelled pretty good, and his fur was soft and shiny.
Thumbs up on the dog-douche idea!
PS I am a little concerned, though. This morning, Rudi had on a little pair of thong panties. And he’s looking a little bloated and pre-menstrual. Cranky, too.
This might’ve been a bad idea.

Oh, please don't tell me they eat dog there in Vietnam.
The elderly Koreans I can understand.
But the noble Vietnamese?
It is a touchy matter, since many if not most Vietnamese strongly disapprove. I will say this, though, it solves the stray dog problem for a poor country (a problem in most third world countries--they run in packs in Bangkok and can be scary). The Vietnamese dog restaurants are back-alley affairs in the worst neighborhoods.
It is more a custom of the north than the south, and the dog eaters tend to be northerners come south for a better life. They take it as a matter of right to do this, not unlike cigarette smokers in the States.
There are many foods available in Vietnam that one never gets in the states: goat, venison, quail and duck eggs, fertilized eggs, snake, gecko (poor Geiko gecko--whenever I see that add I can't help but imagine him on a skewer), frogs. They sometimes eat snails but, unlike the Thais, don't seem to be into insects in any way.
Since I am about 95% vegetarian, I miss on all this.

Translation - i need to label and smear mikezilla because i disagree with him
Hmm. Translation.
Let me try.
"i need to label and smear mikezilla because i disagree with him."
Translating by AltaVista, English to Japanese
http://babelfish.altavista.com/
Japanese sentence.
"私は私が彼に同意しないのでmikezilla を分類し、塗りつける必要がある。"
Translating again, Japanese to English.
English sentence.
"It is necessary for I it meaning that I do not agree to him, to classify mikezilla, to be accustomed to painting."
