Elderly man beaten to death on N.J. turnpike


MOUNT LAUREL, N.J. - A motorist beat a former Soviet political prisoner to death with a rock Thursday at a highway rest stop after the victim declined to buy his religious CDs, police said.
Brian K. White, 26, was arrested after a 90-mile chase and charged with murder, eluding police and weapons violations.
The victim, Michail J. Makarenko, 75, spent 11 years in prison for anti-Soviet agitation and propaganda, said his interpreter and secretary, Gregory Burnside. He lived in Hillsboro, Va., and owned an art gallery that exhibited works of banned artists, Burnside said.

Authorities said White approached Makarenko at a rest stop along the New Jersey Turnpike near Moorestown and began striking him in the head with a rock after he declined to buy the religious CDs. Then White got back in his car and headed toward New York City, police said.
Troopers said they caught up with him about 15 minutes later and chased him for about an hour before he pulled over to the side of the road in Teaneck, jumped out of his vehicle and charged at them.
White was quickly subdued, police said.
"He possibly is delusional," said State Police Maj. Mary Beth Mahlmann.

As usual we don't know the full story, but only a quick sensationalist press report. Who knows what really happened, but the story as posted doesn't make sense. If he really was that insane, others must have declined before, and somehow they lived through it.

Other than being an example of random violence (that can happen anywhere in the world, although in most places the press is more civilized and reports only real news), I don't see the point of having posted it.

Just because White happened to have NOT killed other people who refused his CDs, but did kill the 75 year old man (Michail Makarenko) in question, does not prove that he wasn't suffering from a severe mental imbalance. (iow, deep seated indoctrination with religious nonsense)

Also, i found the following sentence from the article very puzzling;

I was under the impression that no bond was set in the case of aggravated assualt that results in murder. To think about this murderous religious cretin being back out on the streets is chilling.

i'm doubting that some one selling CDs at rest areas is going to be able make that kind of bail, but assuming that he does, the psych exam is still going to be necessary.

I don't think anyone is trying to justify murder.

We have all been approached by people of this sort. I once had a woman approach me as I was sitting on a park bench with, "Are you saved?" After I looked at her puzzled, she shouted, "'Cause if you aren't you will roast in Hell."

Now I can imagine someone starting an argument: don't argue with the deluded. Sometimes discussion and talk helps, but when they are emotional don't say anything except maybe, "You're right," or "I know." Don't even smile (that will be taken as mockery).

This was the point of my remark. We need to try to understand these tragedies, and to have understanding. That the press puts it out as "crazy man" is a large part of the problem.

One cheery note; for some reason White failed to track down the man's wife and children and livestock and kill them too.
