US action film 'insulting to Iran'

Iran has attacked American action movie 300, calling it "psychological warfare" aimed at insulting the country's ancient culture.
The hit film, which raked in a massive 70 million dollars (£35 million) over its opening weekend, is based on a comic-book fantasy version of the 480BC Battle of Thermopylae, where a force of 300 Spartans held off a huge Persian army at a Greek mountain pass for three days.

Director Zack Snyder and the film's producers have stressed that the film is based on a graphic novel by Frank Miller and was never intended to be an accurate historical representation.

"Hollywood declares war on Iranians," a headline in Tuesday's independent Ayende-No newspaper screamed.

Javad Shamghadri, a cultural adviser to Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmedinejad, said the film was "part of a comprehensive US psychological warfare aimed at Iranian culture".

He accused America of trying to "humiliate" Iran to reverse historical reality and "compensate for its wrongdoings in order to provoke American soldiers and warmongers" against the nation.

Some 35,000 people have signed an online petition to Warner Brothers demanding an apology over the movie and an immediate historical review.

Some US reviewers also commented on the political overtones of the West-against-Iran storyline at a time of mounting tension over the nation's nuclear programme and the Iraq war.

They noted that the Persians - from whom Iranians are descended - were portrayed as decadent, sexually flamboyant and evil, in contrast to the noble Greeks.

A Warner Brothers spokesman told Variety: "The film 300 is a work of fiction inspired by the Frank Miller graphic novel and loosely based on an historical event. The studio developed this film purely as a fictional work with the sole purpose of entertaining audiences; it is not meant to disparage an ethnicity or culture or make any sort of political statement."

I have to say, I was disappointed in the "Immortals". They were the badasses of the Persian Army in the book, but they weren't anything special in the movie. They were so lame the director had to add a giant mutant who wasn't in the book to make them more fearsome.

at least they didn't put muhammad in it.. that would mean the natural 6 car bombs and 30 civilian casualties. It's their fault though, they should have KNOWN the crazy fascists would kill people for putting muhammad in a movie...

You will still contribute. Someone is paying the bill, and they wouldn't if people didn't come.

By the way, what is wrong with capital letters? Using them make your messages easier to read.

capital letters are a prime example of the conserva-fascists trying to keep the 'smaller letters' in their place. traditional-thinking right-wing bastards!

what, some letters are 'better' than others, and therefore deserve some sort of elite, larger-than-the-rest-of-us status? *pfft*

back to the iranians being offended by the movie 300.
you thought that was offensive?
try this on for size, you eternally-offended radical muslim jackasses!!

the prophet mohammed walks into a bar, sits down, and asks,
"bartender, got any specials today?"

bartender answers, "yes, as a matter of
fact we have a new drink, invented by
a gynecologist patron of ours.

it's a mix of pabst blue ribbon beer and smirnoff vodka."

the prophet mohammed asks, "good grief, what do you call that?"

the bartender replied, "it's a "pabst smir."

Tehran's local newspaper just said: "Ahmadinejad to declare war on America in less than 300 days. Israelis are pigs."

Kidding, but of course, this news story means I shall have to see the film again to give it more money.

I'll bet college students will make a spoof movie called 300, in reference to the number of pigs Mohammed copulated with. It will be all over youtube in a matter of days.

I appreciate your humor, and geniuses like e.e. cummings can get away with such conceits as omitting capitals, since it adds to the meaning of what they write.

Still, the standards of English evolved for good reasons--mainly to improve clarity and readability.

Iran can make a movie where they invade america and destroy it if they want. Do you think anyone here will care? Why do we continue to take these Persian clowns seriously?

LOL, we should tell then if they dont stop with their nuclear activity we will send 300 spartans in to enforce regime change :D

they are technically "for-profit", but they reinvest what little profit they make into recreational facilities-as i recall. i saw Top Gun 36 times in 1986 @50 cents a pop.:@@:

trust me, if there's a concession stand, and money changes hands, AAFES is there.

I don't think the immortals existed in real life. I think they were a creation of Frank Miller for the book.

it's a movie based on a graphic novel, it's just close-they left out the 1000 or so other Greeks there...but that's neither here nor there-it's still one heck of a story.

Actually, it was closer to 3,000 Greeks against 50,000 Persians, not 300 vs. a million....

It's a comic book Frogger.

It is a movie based off a comic book.

It is an action movie based off a comic book.

Why would you expect it to be close to historically accurate? If you do not see this film you are emasculated to the point of being a woman.

I'm quite positive they existed. The Persian Immortals were the Persian elite Imperial Guard. They always contained exactly 10,000 men, with dead or wounded soldiers replaced immediately. There are many accounts of them and how they fought, including the battle of Thermopylae and against Alexander the Great.

Roughly 300 Spartans and 7000 allies vs 1-500,000 Persians, but after the Persians found the other pass the 7000 allies retreated and left the 300 Spartans to fend against the full force of the Persian army.

There was a muslim girl walking up the stairs near a mosque one day. As the Prophet Mohammed was greeting the hadji’s trekking by, he looked up and noticed that this girl was not wearing any panties.

The Prophet Mohammed called the girl and gave her twenty Drachms and said, "Little girl, take this money and buy yourself some panties. It's not proper to walk around without any panties on."

The girl went home and gave the money to her mother and asked her mother to buy panties for her. When the mother asked where the girl got the money, the girl explained what happened.

Upon hearing how the girl got the money, the mother rushed to her bedroom chamber, whipped-off her underwear, put on one of her shortest burqas, and ran directly to the mosque.

As soon as the mother sees the Prophet Mohammed coming, she begins to walk up the stairs. The holy man then notices the lady and calls her down.

The woman, not wanting to show that she is expecting any attention or drachms, walks back to the Prophet very calmly.

The Prophet Mohammed hands the lady a 10 drachm coin and says...
"Lady, take this money and for Allah’s sake, go buy yourself a razor!"
