Faggot is a terrible word that should never be used or uttered except in the case of fundraising.
Gimme a break John.
"We must show that inflaming prejudice to attack progressive leaders will only backfire.
Can you help us raise $100,000 in "Coulter Cash" this week to keep this campaign charging ahead and fight back against the politics of bigotry?"

My biggest beef with Edwards is the fact he's put the video on his website. "HEY LOOK EVERYONE, SOMEONE CALLED ME A FAGGOT!"
I guess he has to milk it for all it's worth.

Wow, after seeing that youtube video, I'd say Coulter hit the nail on the head. God, people hate brutal honesty, but then again, there's a time and a place for employing a modicum of tact, and exercising the 'when and where' apparently isn't Coulters strong suit. As for Ann, you can call her butch all you want, but it doesn't change the fact that she's better looking than any female the left has to offer.
Although Helen Thomas is a real looker, I'll give you that...

When it's said about Edwards people mumble in hushed tones and say "hey, be nice".
It is inappropriate though.

Yes, because in 2007's USA we use faggot in another connotation.
All that hand holding with John Kerry in the last presidential election, his care for his appearance, and the fact that he is a democrat (a party in more support of gay marriage than the opposition), all do not contribute to Mrs. Coulter's insult.
She must've meant something else, like nerd.

You really credit him for the Democratic victories? How about the candidates themselves? Consider that after a period a given party is in power, the American public almost always drifts to a "time for a change" mentality.
His performance was that of a buffoon and his political views confirm it. The Dems need to keep him in a cage.

What is it you don't understand about the dems taking seats in red states such as Virginia? That was the due to dem strategy (Dean, Pelosi, Emanuel et al) and had nothing to do with voters drifting.
And now it's even easier for the dems ... with the republicans eating their own over supporting Bush's war. Any senator that was marginally elected last time in a red state can kiss that seat good-bye.

Three words come to mind ... Judge Roy Moore.
Ahhhh, I remember him now. Interesting fella. Out in left field, but definitively interesting, nonetheless.
From Wikipedia:
"Moore attended public schools, graduating in 1965 from Etowah County High School. Upon graduation, he was admitted to the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1969. With the Vietnam conflict reaching its peak, Moore first served in several posts as a military police officer, including Fort Benning, Georgia, and Illesheim, Germany before being sent to Vietnam. Moore served as company commander of his MP unit and was known to be very strict (to the point of earning a reputation as "being a stickler for constant salutes and regulation haircuts in the midst of war"), earning him the derogatory nickname "Captain America." His role earned him several enemies, and he so feared being fragged that he recalls in his autobiography sleeping on sandbags to avoid a grenade or bomb being tossed under his cot.
Moore left the United States Army as a captain in 1974, and was admitted to the University of Alabama School of Law that same year, graduating with a Juris Doctor degree in 1977. After graduating, he returned to his hometown of Gadsden and began private practice, focusing on personal injury and insurance cases."
He's obviously not dumb, but to lose his post as Chief Justice to the Supreme Court of Alabama for not removing a wooden tablet is insanity. I mean, let's really examine the Ten Commandments, shall we:
1. You shall not worship any other god but YHWH. (Definitely inappropriate)
2. You shall not make a graven image. (Another example of something that shouldn't be mentioned in a court of law)
3. You shall not take the name of YHWH in vain. (Ditto)
4. You shall not break the Sabbath. (Double ditto)
5. You shall not dishonor your parents. (Now we get to the really good stuff - the really, really blood-thirsty shit...)
6. You shall not murder. (Is there a law against that, or something?)
7. You shall not commit adultery. (A court is no place to have your character judged, thank you very much. This needs to be removed.)
8. You shall not steal. (Like that's illegal...pfft.)
9. You shall not commit perjury. (What...? Do you mean, like, in court? Who says I can't do that???)
10. You shall not covet. (Who are you - the morality police, or something? Fuck off, Nazi.)

I am curious, however, how you reach the conclusion that unintentional racists (I think you mean those who claim to be tolerant but in fact are condescending or mildly hypocritical about it) are worse than real racists.
Real racists burn crosses in front years and join lynching parties. They insult minorities openly and laugh about it. They discriminate on purpose.

Racist is a label for someone's views. It can be used as a neutral comment, a slander, or even a compliment (if you live in FT's town). Faggot is a slang word with derogatory connotations here in America.
You're questioning why it should be okay to call someone something such as "atheist," when it is not okay to call them a "godless bastard." The Winter was hard on your mind, was it?

The amazing thing about this discussion is that Ann Coulter made her comments around the same time such left-wing illuminaries as Marzipan and Bill Maher were making jokes about wishing Cheney were killed by terrorists.
But saying faggot is evil and insensitive.

You have made it abundantly clear you don't think calling someone a faggot is wrong. You have made your point, stupid though it is.

By all means, if you *remember* where Lungdop said that he 'hated Jews', please share it with me. You or Brooks either one.
I'm serious. I'd like to see the quote --or your recollection-- of what it was he said.
I missed it.

1. Maher said no such thing.
2. You have made it abundantly clear you don't think calling someone a faggot is wrong. You have made your point, stupid though it is.
1. Maher: I’m just saying if he did die, other people, more people would live. That’s a fact.
He did say it. And this is in far worse taste than saying faggot.
2. I said in another post that it is inappropriate. She shouldn't have said it.
But the reaction far surpasses the seriousness of the incident (that is unless one is using the incident to raise "Coulter Cash" on his fundraising page).

Free, if you don't remember it's probably because it didn't bother you as much as it bothered me.
If someone says "Where did Freethinker say he doesn't care for Republicans" does that mean I have to find that as a quote from you?
There is no quote in which Lungdop says "I hate Jews", but there are many posts where he shows a strong, strong, strong dislike, antipathy etc toward them.

That is an abject lie.
Here is the exact quote of Maher.
""Have you heard about this, this week? The Taliban tried to blow up Dick Cheney. Don’t worry, he’s okay. [laughter] [audience reacts “aw”] [laughter] No, he was never in danger. At the time of the attack he was safely asleep in his coffin. [laughter] So… [applause] I’m joking. I just hope that this attempt on his life doesn’t turn him bitter, vicious and paranoid. Because that…..""
(I don't know any left-wing illuminaries <sic> named 'Marzipan'.)

You claimed he "wished Cheney was killed by terrorists". He said no such thing. Your lies are worse than what you are claiming he said. He was clearly making a statement of fact, not making a wish.
What Maher did say isn't anywhere near as bad as what Coulter says on a regular basis.
2. I said in another post that it is inappropriate. She shouldn't have said it.
Then you would have to be a raging hypocrite to flip flop and try to defend what she said. Especially if you did it in an incredibly stupid way, like by claiming she might not have meant "gay".
But the reaction far surpasses the seriousness of the incident (that is unless one is using the incident to raise "Coulter Cash" on his fundraising page).
And here we have the flip flopping. It is inappropriate but you fault the victim for fighting back.

1. His statement, in the context of the supposed assassination attempt, was that other people would live if Cheney were killed.
Also I said that Maher was "making jokes about wishing Cheney were killed" not "[I] claimed he wished Cheney was killed....."
Big difference.
2. Making a joke speculating about the VP getting killed is worse than saying faggot.
3. Where did I defend what she said (I really don't expect a reply to this)?

Yeah...Louise Brooks.Very misunderstood,headstrong little
fireplug of an actress.Never got past her alluring mystique with
those in Hollywood, determined to shape her as they saw fit.
Lived a lrather long life, unknown by most.
In her heyday, her allure and sexiness, was almost unrivaled.
I've only seen a few of her movies.I can't take too much silent
era.But she certainly set the stage for Page girl type headstrongs.
Hers was similar to the great Greta Garbo. Those intense eyes
and profile, and inner strenght of independence.

I beg your actress. If all it takes for an actress,is to act uppity and
feel, top of the mountain, with their singular pert look and
coy manner, then Miss Brooks was ALMOST Unique.
But,she proved to fail the ultimate test of true
thespianship and rigor. She quit too easy and with too
mush impatience.I wonder if Hollywood, ever uses her as a model for
-- Just who the hell does she think she Is --.
Hollywood makes and breaks more like her,in a year, than

Coulter was out of line to use it on such an "intelligent" and "good-mannered" stage...
however, in today's american society.. "faggot" is normally used in context. What is a stereotypical "faggot"? Someone who is thin, flamboyent, happy, and likes guys. So when two meatheads bump into each other at a bar, one will call the other a "faggot" or a "bitch" in order step down a level. The other meathead has the option of either leaving, and having some guy he doesn't know label him as a "faggot" or "bitch" and the matter will be forgotten instantaneously... OR, the meathead can step down and reply in kind, normally followed by pushing, loud yelling, insulting, and two guys trying to throw a punch or two as they either go to the ground or security steps in and kicks them out...
THAT is how the word is used...
