Why don't you just go to the web site he is getting them from and get them all.

Good call, Thislin.
Since FT is using a tired cut and paste technique to advance his argument, then clearly it can't be that hard to do a web search and find the source of his anti-Christian web-vomit.

On your earlier posting:
I don't use profanities (except an occasional "damn" or "hell"--never in reference to a person. Further, what I post has to be stretched to be called insulting. Please post examples otherwise.[/B]

two or three apparently intelligent & reasoning beings had fallen into the tired habit of selecting hackneyed and all-too-convenient labels for their beliefs, and then, predictably, found themselves having to defend them.

Again, please post an example from the posts in the exchange where I do this. You are doing what you accuse me of.

/QUOTE]

Your charges are made without substantiation, and I reject them as an attempt, a rather unfortunate and preachy attempt, to link me with the likes of Napster and FT, simply because I disagree with your religious views. You are the one doing the labeling that you complain of.

This is less about you and more about the topic at hand. You seem to be a tad overly-defensive.

If you insist on reading the first line or two of dialogue and then firing off an angry diatribe, then I suspect that you and I won't have all that much to say to each other. Again, these observations and complaints strike me as knee-jerk and reactionary.

Insulting?
You insinuated that I had no place in this debate.
You were condescending and dismissive.

Profanity?
I didn't accuse you of using profanity.
I was speaking of others in the debate. Myself included.

Disagree with my religious views?
a. I have no religion, though I do have a belief in some higher power
and
b. I think you and I agree more than you'd like to believe.
You alude to the charm of karma and/or tau.
I am a great believer in karma, but am also a man of science.

Science pays the bills at my house, not God.
There's no underestimating the power of that statement.

FT, please don't stop until you have all 26 letters posted. Yes, one could go to the website, and get them all, but there is value in repackaging into smaller, more easily managed portions. The entire compilation is a wondrous resource and could properly be considered a work of art. A derivative work, even!

People tend to complain about cut-and-paste arguments whenever they just don't like the arguments being proposed. Funny that they never seem to have an objection whenever they are cutting and pasting themselves, or reading somebody else's argument they like.

This is less about you and more about the topic at hand. You seem to be a tad overly-defensive.

You posted charges in such a way as to include me, without any effort to say otherwise, so what am I to think? Saying I seem "defensive" now is incorrect; I am pissed.

You insinuated that I had no place in this debate.
You were condescending and dismissive.

Now who is being defensive? You use the word "insinuated," which means to me that you chose to take it that way. It certainly was not intended, as you should be able to tell from my response to your charge. On the matter of my being "condescending," earlier you complained of my being the opposite. It is hard to walk between them when the other person is determined to look for something of the sort.

Profanity?
I didn't accuse you of using profanity.
I was speaking of others in the debate. Myself included.

You would have been perfectly happy to leave the charge in place if I hadn't objected.

You allude to the charm of karma and/or tau.
I am a great believer in karma, but am also a man of science.

Karma has "charm." A dangerous word, since it has magical origins, but I think you only mean it has appeal. Interestingly, I am ambivalent about karmic thinking, since so much airheadedness parades under that banner.

What I do think is that our acts have consequences--immediate consequences such as "throw a rock through a window and go to jail--and more insidious consequences--tell a lie and lying becomes a tad easier to do in the future. This is a natural process and can be called "karma" (the word can translate "cause and effect"). Much of what we attribute to luck is in reality the unseen effects of our behavior.

Science pays the bills at my house, not God.
There's no underestimating the power of that statement.

Are you sure God doesn't play a role in there somewhere? <Grin>

If he does, he sure is one of the old school Gods. (Not a kind and beneficent deity, but rather one given to throwing lightning bolts, employing demons, and dishing out the eternal suffering.)

With what I've got to face at the workplace each and every day (and at this rate, for the rest of my life?) I feel like I've been cast into Purgatory.

Considering all the sins perpetrated during my misspent youth, I'd say that there's also a bit of karma rolling around back onto me as well.

My word that sounds depressing. I don't know what advice I might give except do something.

Every job has times of stress and times when you have to deal with idiot superiors, but if the job presents no future, that is different, something needs doing.

If you have significant debts and other financial obligations, then you probably fear changing jobs, and possibly the best thing that could happen to you is for you to lose it, forcing change. America is now at full employment (those who are out of work now are either in transition or are essentially unemployable), so you could almost certainly quickly find another.

The question may be that another job would be no better and you need to adjust your thinking to find positives in your present situation.

Yup, I am an asshole and am using it for personal vendetta but if a 'christian' can constantly pound down my throat what a loving god they serve and go world wide proclaiming this, I think it's my right to pound it down his throat the other side of his god.
I just got a 3 page letter from a preacher man telling me 100's of scriptural reasons I need to serve his god. Can't wait til you get to z so I can give him 100's of reasons not too.

I am all apologies, Br’er Freethinker.

Instead of ‘anti-Christian web-vomit’, I should have used the term, ‘anti-Bible / anti-Government / Godz-n-gunz / fundamentalist Conservafascist / Gee Dubya-loving / moronic believers of vaporous faeries & imaginary gods who would slay babies with a sword’.

Can’t keep the score without a scorecard, I guess.

Thanks for the advice, friend thislin.

It's really less a matter of the job or the supervisors, and more a matter of the culture in which the job resides.

I recently made a major move to get away from less-than-reputable 'management' and am now working for people that I respect and admire. And to be fair, I really do love my work.

As for the rest, well, it's simple mathematics:

A lifetime of achieving & saving + a catacly$mic divorce + putting two girls through college = $0 in savings.

Oh well, what did Friedrich Nietzsche always say?
That which doesn't kill us makes us stronger?

Again, thanks for the concern and supportive words.

I thought long and hard before posting that.

I got the impression you didn't like your work; since you do, the rest is easier to deal with.

When retirement time comes, secure your social security and what savings and pension you can, and move to Vietnam and marry a local Vietnamese young woman. Be kind to her and reasonably generous to her parents and you will be well cared for. <Grin>

Seriously, your problem is the divorce; I have to tell you that I feel so fortunate that that particular prospect never touched me.

You're seriously missing the point, Sparky. If you took a series of quotations out of, say, Michael Moore's new book, (is he even an author?) designed to bring about the impression that he's a fucking loon, somebody could make the statement that you are being ridiculously hateful. But all you did is quote statements from it. Sure, some of them might have been taken out of context, but all of the content is originally Moore's. Everything came out of his mouth, and is quoted right there from the book. But all of a sudden, when it's the Bible, people get defensive. It's an ugly double standard that keeps people from seeing Christianity for what it is.

I'm sorry if you don't like this, but fear motivates people far more than utopian vision, and the Bible was written with that in mind, hence all that. What FT is quoting is a much more accurate representation of Christianity than the thousands or so quote lists we have today designed to show God's love and uplift people. I'd be willing to bet that throughout most of the history of Christianity, quote lists like FT's were more widely circulated amongst believers, simply to put the fear of God in them.

What you cannot do is formulate anything approaching a refutation of or answer to the fact that I am simply directing people to read exactly what is written in the Bible.

The fact that you choose to characterize the the Bible verses I am informing people about as being "anti-Christian vomit" says a lot.

Yikes. Quit splitting hairs, will ya?

My only assertion was that your POSTING of these excerpts from the Bible is intended to be hateful and antagonistic toward Christians and those who subscribe to the 'teachings' of the good book.

I myself do not subscribe to the teachings of the bible, because I do not consider it the literal 'word of God'.

As I have stated before, I consider the Bible a pasted-together collection of writings, stories, and parables that have changed considerably over the centuries due to the political inclinations and evolving/changing social mores of the various 'editors' who have had a hand in its various revisions and interpretations.

I believe that the Bible is interesting from a historical and sociological standpoint, but cannot personally view it as the credible cornerstone of my faith.

But I would never criticize those who find comfort, solace, and meaning in the words of the bible. You, on the other hand, would consider them hypocrites for subscribing to the teachings of 'the good book' that has all these archaic and violent images and references in it from God knows how long ago. (No pun intended.)

"You bugger-eating morons believe in God, and this book here is your light and your path. See how much violence and ugliness there is in it?”

Very judgmental of you really, for such an otherwise open-minded ‘freethinker’.

How is the air up there on that high horse anyway?

OK.

But those who would worship an abominable, bloodthirsty monster who orders babies to be mutlitated and slaughtered richly deserve --IMO-- whatever derision or antagonism comes their way.

I believe that the Bible is interesting from a historical and sociological standpoint, but cannot personally view it as the credible cornerstone of my faith.

But I would never criticize those who find comfort, solace, and meaning in the words of the bible.

IF said group of superstitionists were not intent on forcing me --thru myriad laws and prohibitions and taboos-- to conform to their irrational and superstitious worldview, I would not be criticizing them. I'd still be making fun of them, true enough, but I wouldn't really CARE one way or the other that they drink the blood and eat the flesh of their "god".

You, on the other hand, would consider them hypocrites for subscribing to the teachings of 'the good book' that has all these archaic and violent images and references in it .....Very judgmental of you really,.....

I'm simply pointing out their irrationality and their hypocrisy.

How is the air up there on that high horse anyway?

Much fresher and cleaner than it is for brainwashed twits who worship omnipotent, supernatural beings who kill thousands of women and infants at one sitting. Thanks for asking.

11 Christ on a White Horse

Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. 12 His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. 13 He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. 14 And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses. 15 Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. 16 And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written:

KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.

Yes, I of course realize that many murderous and bloody and ugly things have taken place on this planet throughout its history.

What I am "dwelling on", however, is the unbelievable circumstance of a billion people sharing the same bizarre mental imbalance........namely, that there is this holy and caring "god" that is high above them watching over them, who they view as being the epitome of *perfect love*, yet the same god they view as so "loving" and benevolent once ordered --among countless other atrocities being pointed out in the verses of his "perfect" Book-- the horrific slaughter of infants.

The claim of "loving god" can NOT be reconciled with a god who orders women, infants and livestock to be slaughtered wholesale.

In your mind:

* There is no God, (and you need to beat all these people over the head to point out what morons they are for believing in one) ?

or

* There is a God and you are angry that (according to this collection of scriptures and stories authored by humans thousands of years ago, and edited by humans many times since then) he is a brutal and uncaring entity?

Which is it?
The way you've chosen to phrase your last few postings on this topic, it's really hard to figure out where you are coming from.
You're starting to sound conflicted, sir.

Free thinker said The claim of "loving god" can NOT be reconciled with a god who orders women, infants and livestock to be slaughtered wholesale.

First YAHWEH is a loving God toward his people and by sending his son YAHSHUA to pay for our sins he does offer a way for sinners.
But for those who turn their back on YAHSHUA there is the lake of fire.

Free Thinker what you don't get is YAHWEH can be an angry God and rightfully so. If people sin and don't repent then there will be a penalty.
Don't think for one minute people can just live the lifes they want if that isn't YAHWEH's way.

NKJV

Rev 21:7-8
8 But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death."
NKJV

You might want to think twice about making YAHWEH angry.

But for those who turn their back on YAHSHUA there is the lake of fire.

Such a god is a moral disgrace, and worshipping such a god is immoral.

Such a god is a moral disgrace, and worshipping such a god is immoral.

Yeah, but it’s so much fun to SAY.
It just kind of rolls off your tongue!!

Doo Wah Diddy (a YAHWEH ditty)

There she was just a-walkin down the street,
Singin, do-wah diddy-diddy doin’ YAHWEH-diddy-do
Annointing my hair and offering to wash my feet,
Singin, do-wah diddy-diddy doing’ YAHSHUA-diddy-do
Magdalene looked good, (she looked good)
She looked fine, (looked fine)
She looked good, she looked fine
So why is she so maligned?

Before I knew it she was Last Supping next to me.
Singin, do-wah diddy-diddy doin’ YAHWEH-diddy-do
Breaking bread just as natural as can be,
Singin, do-wah diddy-diddy doing’ YAHSHUA-diddy-do
We walked on, (walked on)
To my door, (my door)
Please tell them all
This redhead’s no whore

Wo-o-o-oh, I knew we were falling in love,
Yes I did, and so I told her all the things
That my Father had been scheming of…

Now we’re together though it’s crucifiction day,
Singin, do-wah diddy-diddy doin’ YAHWEH-diddy-do
I’m gonna die but that’s not how it’s gonna stay,
Singin, do-wah diddy-diddy doing’ YAHSHUA-diddy-do
I’m hers, (I’m hers)
She’s mine, (she’s mine)
that’s one thing
Biblical scholars can’t divine

Do-wah diddy-diddy doin’ YAHWEH-diddy-do
Do-wah diddy-diddy doing’ YAHSHUA-diddy-do!!!

Sparky, that's the funniest thing i've read in weeks.

You are talented, sir.

Take your show on the road and for god's sakes don't forget us little people when you get rich.

Bless you.

I see Rendova gets your humor, but I don't. I think my reaction to the Hell business is normal and honest. The teaching is immoral: I have yet to see anyone provide anything that might convince me otherwise.

Yes, well. No offense Thislin, you're a great guy and I love your posts and I think you're very insightful, intelligent, and articulate...but you have NO sense of humor.

Ah--a "sense of humor." I will admit most of what passes for funny in this world I find unfunny. Comedy that works by people making fools of themselves or others is not funny to me. Nor do I find gimmicky humor, such as word play and pratfalls and clowns and mimics (although a well-turned, unforced and original pun is much appreciated).

People from time to time do accuse me of not having a sense of humor, but I know better: mine is just different. I prefer subtlety to buffoonery.

In the case at hand it appears to me that the "humor" was posted to avoid dealing with the issue--as an evasive maneuver. Now I don't really care to catch people in traps where they have to make concessions, since I know that won't happen anyway. Still, such tactics are what they are.

Read through 5 Sparky stories, if you don't laugh, your sense of humor is not just different, it doesn't exist.

Here's the true test of humor. Do you appreciate Monty Python?

Much of Monty Python is forced and seems a desperate attempt to be funny.

There was in each show one or two skits that I very much appreciated. One that I really liked was the dead parrot. Another was the "cushy pillows" torture of the old lady by the Inquisition.

My favorite comedian of all time is probably Peter Sellers. While much of the humor is him making a fool of himself, it is not Lucille Ball foolishness, but something much deeper--how we all stumble around blind, completely unaware of reality--and, when we succeed, it is almost always in spite of ourselves and because of sheer accident.

When you demand that your humor must be spiritually enlightening, you are asking far too much of it.

Where did I say that? I will admit that humor with substance is great, but I never insisted it had to have substance.

Yeah, but only because it's real. I hate when comedians do that slap stick crap. It has to be real. Or really twisted, that works too. :D

Completely agreed. The minimalistic editing is another reason why it's so hilarious. The paring down of humor to its raw elements is a fascinating, and ever-rewarding, field of study.

The Prophet Mohammed walks into a bar with a pig under his arm and orders ten drinks.

He finishes them up and the bartender says, "Don't you need to know where the bathroom is?"

The Prophet Mohammed says, "No, me and my little piggy go wee wee wee all the way home."

There is a problem with mocking other religions if you are not willing to mock your own: or maybe even if you are willing to mock your own.

"Just a joke" can be used to cover things that are malicious and demeaning.

A Catholic priest and a Jewish rabbi are next door neighbors, and are always competing with each other. One day the Catholic priest comes home with a brand new Cadillac. The rabbi gets pissed when the priest is washing his brand new car in his driveway, so he immediately goes out and buys a new Beamer.

The next day, the rabbi sees the priest pouring a cup of water over the car. "What are you doing?" asks the rabbi.

"Giving my new addition to the family a baptism," replies the priest. The rabbi fumes.

The day afterwards, the priest goes outside to see the rabbi going to town on his Beamer's tailpipe with a hacksaw. "What in the world are you doing?" the priest asks.

"Circumcising," the breathy, but quick reply comes.

I'm pretty sure I've been an equal opportunity satirist when it comes to religious beliefs, sir.

That said:

Bartender says, "Why the long face?"

The prophet replies, "I just found out my brother-in-law is Porky Pig!"

maybe to us it is but you really don't understand islam at all. I suggest you not drop that into a islam forum, you will not like what happens next. You have made an insult to their religion., they don't take that lightly.
