View Full Version : More Race Controversy - Frat's MLK Party

Leper

A frat at Clemson University threw a dress-up party on the eve of MLK day which included girls stuffing in their bottoms, "grills", afro wigs, gangsta clothing, consumption of 40-oz malt liquor, and one student painting himself black.

Is it wrong?

Edit: Here's the link from an article about it: http://www.cnn.com/2007/EDUCATION/01/31/clemson.party.ap/index.html

i'm not Mr. PC, but even i can see that as grossly insensitive...

but at least they marked the day by something other than calling it James Earl Ray Day.

Sounds like a fun party. People are getting way to concerned with being PC. People throw 'gangster' parties, or 'pimps n hoes' parties all the time and all the guys dress in what we consider 'black' clothing. Who cares?

'black' people care.

A local HS (on the rich side of town) made the paper for a similar 'day' last year celebrating the Hispanic culture. Kids came to school wearing khakis, long-sleeved shirts and carrying leaf blowers. Officials put a stop to their lil festival.

There are white trash parties as well. I don't get offended. It's just a party, the kids are trying to have a good time.

Maybe the blacks don't like seeing the way their brethern are so often seen in public. Sometimes reality really sux. Going in 'blackface' is a bit overboard, but the rest? BFD. Would blacks holding a "redneck" party (greasy ballcaps, some teeth blacked out, dipping snuff or chewing tobacco, drinking Natural Lite by the gallon) be worthy of the same level of publicity? I doubt it.

Personally, I would say it's a private party and you can be as insensitive as you want. You can have bachelor and bachelorette parties which are extraordinarily insensitive to the opposite sex. You can have hillbilly parties. I just don't see why it's anyone's business but the partygoers.

The NAACP got pissed off, so now they're trying to hunt down people who were drinking that were under 21. That's bullshit. It should have been only the business of the partygoers, but not anymore.

Did the party get out of hand? Were the cops called? What about the EMS folks or the fire department? Was there a bonfire in the dorm or somebody firing weapons into the air? Any complaints about loud music or anything of the sort? All we've seen and heard is that a bunch of white kids had a party, the theme of which apparently offended some folks. Tough shit.

the Feds didn't get Al Capone for murder or bootlegging, they got him for tax evasion...what they could prove. the NAACP can't prove insensitivity because there's no law against it...until the left-wing loonies get their way.

A few years ago, a fraternity at the University of Wisconsin did something at least as distasteful. They held a slave auction, at which members put on blackface and auctioned off their services to raise money for charity. It wasn't a matter for law enforcement, as there isn't a law against acting offensively (thankfully). It was however a matter of concern for the local Inter-Fraternity Council and the University. They were punished by being suspended from all interfraternity activities for a year, including such things as not being allowed to have a float in the homecoming parade. The University warned them that any further such behavior would result in the loss of their status as a fraternity recognized by the university. The loss of such status would also result in the loss of money from student funds to help fund their fraternity.
These actions seemed reasonable to me, since they involved those organizations saying they did not wish to be affiliated with the fraternity. They have a right to be offensive, and others have the right to be offended. Others also have the right not to be associated with the offensive individuals.

I agree. I also think that your example is far, far more distasteful than the one originally presented. If I walked by a 'slave auction' I'd give them a piece of my mind.

Screw James Barker and screw the NAACP. So they were offended. BFD. People get offended every day. I am offended when I hear a rap song calling women ho's. I get offended whn Mexicans jam the 7-11 parking lot looking for day work. I get offended when rich white kids act like poor black kids. There are things that offend me just as there are things that offend others. Who really cares.

Last I heard being offensive was not yet against the law. If it was anyone who drove a Yugo would be in jail.

Biggest difference is LULAC & NAACP exist for minorities, while no similar group exists for the majority population. What those organizations are best at, in this day and age, is either raising hell or playing martyr as whatever presenting situation may serve them best.

Much more difficult to get your cash back when you're mugged than it is to cancel your debit card.

I was mugged a couple weeks ago. I only had $46 on me at the time, and that was more than I usually carry. (I use my Discover and my Visa, not cash, when I buy anything. Or my debit card if I'm approaching my credit limits -- happening less often as I go from a single card with a $500 limit, to another with a $300 limit, to that guy getting upped to $600.) I got really lucky and the CPD found the guy, and I'll get my money back after they're through using it as "evidence", but that could have been a lot worse if I carried around hundreds in cash and the guy wasn't a dumbass. And oh, was he a dumbass...he mugged me while wearing a bright green Boston Red Sox cap...which he never thought to take off. Not all crooks are quite that dumb. You can take fraudulent charges off a credit or debit card, but you can't do that with cash.

Just a thought.

I very rarely walk out of the house with less than 300 cash in my pocket.

I have carried around as much as 3 or 4 thousand in hundreds in my pocket for many days in a row if I was going to a lot of poker games. (this was pre-internet and even before the land based casinos began to be so common)

But then, I am in a very rural area, and muggings are exceptionally rare.

I've done the same thing. Speaking of which, I won 2,500 playing Texas Hold 'em yesterday, and the funny part is, I would've bet cash money on my blood alcohol content being in excess of .25. To be honest, I can't even think straight today; I've been useless at work, and I have a raging headache.

Why does it show lack of respect for a white male to make himself up as MLK at a MLK party? From the short news note, this may well have been his intent.

Outrage Over California College Party Accused of Mocking Hispanics

SANTA CLARA, California — A "South of the Border" theme party has stirred outrage at a university after students showed up at the bash dressed as Hispanic janitors, gardeners, gangbangers and pregnant teens.
Photographs from the private, off-campus party organized by Santa Clara University students in late January appeared on the Internet soon afterward, prompting an outcry on campus.
One image shows a partygoer with a balloon stuffed under her shirt, making her appear pregnant. In another, a woman wears pink rubber cleaning gloves and carries a feather duster.
"A lot of people have the idea that Mexicans or Latin Americans are all like that, and that's wrong," said Nadine Rasch, 18, a finance major from Guatemala, who did not attend the party.
Paul Locatelli, president of the nearly 8,400-student Jesuit university, has condemned the party. No students have been disciplined, but a campus spokeswoman said the school is investigating the party and that the university's code of conduct extends to students who live off-campus.
A protest march organized by students attracted 250 people, while the campus has held meetings and plans a forum next week.
