View Full Version : Are there any more original ideas?
A good friend of mine made a statement and it seems to be quite valid. His statement was this:
There are no more original movie ideas left. All they do now are remakes and bring comic book hero's to the screen.
I know it's not entirely true, but it is a valid point, I think. Anyone agree with my friend or no? Thought it might be an interesting discussion.

There are an infinate number of possibilities in the universe, so saying there are no more ideas is kinda dumb if you ask me.

Your friend doesn't see enough movies. Mainstream movies have always been cliche from books, a lot of them survived on various sequels. Most of the movies ever made, from the beginning to 2007, are poorly-thought out ideas. Storytelling has existed for thousands of years, and all stories seem to borrow a premise from the same base roots. Tell him/her that they need to look at this years Oscar Nominees and watch a few, instead of blaming Hollywood for making "remakes and comic book movies."

Just when I think all the good stories have been told, and all the good movies made, something new comes along and surprises me.
There's hope for us yet!
There does seem to be a lot of repition--that's because they're merely pushing a sure-seller.

I think there will always be original ideas, but good movies need not rely solely on originality in any case. A movie should focus on being good (eg. good direction, story, script, acting, music, cinematography, editing...etc etc.) way above trying to be original.
There is also the difference between a well executed tribute and a poorly made copy. Many great movies contain elements taken from previous great movies, as long as it's done right you have a great movie in the end.
What kind of movies does your friend usually like watching?
What kind of movies does your friend usually like watching?
In retrospect, perhaps he was referring to mainstream. He does enjoy some of the less popular, smaller scale (independant) movies. Perhaps he does so because of his belief of nothing original from the mainstream?
I never really paid much attention to what was produced, only what I cared to see and it seemed after the statement was made, it seemed to be plausible.

As far as I knew, there are still original ideas regarding movie itself... likewise the Jim Carrey's Number 23...the original comes from the number and give meaning through his ideas...23 can be found somewhere and in whatever manipulation...and one of the other movie equation is The Devil's Algebra by Tom Shankland...if someone get the brief idea of every mathematical film, you can't say there is no original ideas...
"A serial killer is cutting an equation into the victims' corpses: 'wz = Cov (w.z)...

That was a good movie? The previews made it look like crap.
I was born in 1985, 1 + 9 + 8 + 5 = 23
My address is 5740, 5*7-4+0 = 23

Of course they are, I learned about 23 in elementary school, you can get to it from almost any combination of numbers. That doesn't make the movie bad.

Lot's of original ideas if we just know more about the movies we are watchinghttp://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/38624000/jpg/_38624243_strummerlive_300.jpg
Anyone know Joe Strummer and the Clash Band?
This will finally made as a documentary filmed by Julien Temple about the real story of Strummer behind the front man of the seminal punk... The film includes live concert footage spanning Strummer's career...

Noone cares about joe strummer..
i'd say the complaint about movies is SOMEWHAT warranted, but hardly as bad as music. There are only so many musical chords, and only so many sequences you can put them in, and only so many time signatures you can place them in... music is a lot worse off than movies.

You didn't got what I mean...Joe Strummer:The Future is Unwritten is a documentary film and the filmed covers up his real story and his frontman being a singer of the Clash Band...common,let's be general....
During the years he led the Clash, Joe Strummer bared his soul at the top of his lungs. As principal singer and lyricist, Strummer's voice was the Clash's voice, and Strummer's philosophies - social, political, sexual and spiritual - got right in your face.
Joe Strummer has written from the perspectives of South American mercenaries, dying desperados, Sid Vicious and Mick Jones. The only person he hasn't sung about is Joe Strummer.

One of the greatest soundtracks is the London Calling during 1979...
"London Calling" is the hit song off the album of the same name (London Calling, 1979) by the U.K. punk rock band The Clash; it is also the album's first track. This apocalyptic, politically charged rant features the band's famous combination of reggae basslines and punk electric guitar and vocals.

There have been thousands of movies made so obviously creative ideas are harder to come by. But I would still put a comic book movie or remake before most movies made before 1990. So maybe the ideas aren't that original, but the movies are still better.
