Calling it "pop" has just never felt right, even though I grew up where everyone refers to it as such. However, those are the same people that when asked for a Dr. Pepper offered root beer as a substitute.
Soda it is!

SODA!
I hate, hate, hate it when people say pop. Coke is ok I guess. But still, soda. And I want to know what people say for "other". Actually I think I've heard people call it "tonic", so maybe that's one of them.

A "coke" is just that: Coke. Any other carbonated beverage falls into the category of "soda", unless specified by trade name.

Yes.
I always consider the second question to mean: Diet, Zero, Cherry, Vanilla, Lemon, Lime, or Cherry Vanilla.
But they seem to take it as all PepsiCo products, Coca-Cola products, and all Dr.Pepper/7Up products, as well as everything in between. Confusing really.

Sal adjusted her posture in the Lazy Boy lounger, and drummed her fingers.
Where was that manservant and her glass of pop?
She flipped through the channels on the satelite remote. 159 channels, and not a damn thing on.
"Raphael!!" she shouted. "Where the hell is my pop??"
Sal's cool, sleek skin positively glowed. Two hours of therapy with the visiting chiropractor this afternoon, and she had given that young man quite a work-out. She wore only a brief sarong and a bikini top.
"Raphael!!" she repeated from the comfort of her lounge chair. "Do not make me break out the cat 'o nine tails, young sir!!"
Sal fumed, and her posture foretold an evening of cheap television drama, domestic servant abuse, and the possibility that the Milton Bradley board game Twister would be introduced into this darkly sexual scenario.
At that point, the house cat executed a hasty retreat to parts unknown.

Okay, forget the term "Coke". It only refers to Coca-Cola, period.
So that leaves us with pop and soda. The way I see it, the full name for the beverage is "soda pop". If you want to be formal, call it by it's last name. If you want to be casual, stick to the first-name basis (as I do).

Pop doesn't sound formal. Soda pop is what people in the West say, such as in the gloomy and useless states of Montana and Wyoming.
