If you're like me, reading comes in waves. Sometimes I've got 3 books going at the same time... sometimes months go by and I don't read anything heavier than the newspaper.

Here are some books I've read recently and really enjoyed:

By A Lady - Amanda Elyot
Bastard Out of Carolina - Dorothy Allison
State of Fear - Michael Crichton
Devil Went Down to Austin - Rick Riordan
Thirteenth Tale - Diane Setterfield
Devil Wears Prada - Lauren Weisberger
Duchess, a novel of Sarah Churchill - Susan Holloway Scott
Memoirs of a Geisha - Arthur Golden

What's the best stuff you've read lately?

I am presently , 1215 the Year of Magna Carta by Danny Danzinger and John Gillingham.

So far this month I have read The Assassins A Radical Sect of Islam by Bernard Lewis, Torpedo Juice by Tim Dorsey, Hannibal Rising by Thomas Harris, and Next by Michael Chrichton.

The next books on my to read list are War Means Fighting, Fighting Means Killing: Pea Ridge to the Seven Days by Shelby Foote, In the Lion's Court: Power, Ambition and Sudden Death in the Reign of Henry VIII, and the two volume, The War of Revolution by Christopher Ward.

I tend to switch between reading mystery novels and straight history.

I work at a library--believe it or not, I don't always have TIME to read!

Am plowing my way through "The Glorious Cause" by Jeff Shaara, a novel about the Revolution. I will probably finish it in a few years.

I just recently discovered 'historic novels' and have really enjoyed the few I've read. Takes a little getting into for me since I've never been a big fan of European history, but I'm learning to enjoy the insight into lifestyles of the past. Weren't many 'saints' among the masses back then either!

I really like historical fiction. I like the odd biography too, but it takes a good author to make non-fiction as interesting as a novel. I also enjoy seeing how people lived in the past, especially things like what they wore, what they ate, and what their houses were like...

DF, you really should read By A Lady - Amanda Elyot if you like historic novels. It's about a modern day actress who's 'transported' back in time during a rehearsal for a Jane Austen play. I thought it was a fascinating story! Let me know what you think about it if you decide to read it.

How was Torpedo Juice? I read Dorsey's Triggerfish Twist not long ago and thought it was real funny. I'm not familiar with the author, but understand he's written quite a few other books. Any you'd recommend?
