it doesn't have the sound software. there is a port in the back to plug in speakers. and it didn't come with an xp disk.

how do i make sure there is a sound card?
how do i get the software to run it?

any chance i can use my xp disk?

*i told them not to buy a used computer .... unless it was mine. parents are so hard to train.

If the port is there, that means there is a sound card.

You need to find out what kind. If you can find the model of the motherboard, sometimes by looking in the case, it's hard even if you know what you're looking at, then you can figure out what kind of card it is with a quick google.

Otherwise you could try some of the more common drivers. AC'97 is a common older one. nForce is another one.

or just view the system information...but it has to be operating for that.

Make sure that the PC is using independant sound card or the ciruit is part of the mother board, usually the sound port in desktop computers is in the upper part of the case if it is built in motherboard,if so it means that it is not faulty and it needs is DREVER FILES which you can download from the internet if you can find the motherboard model and manufacturer.Find out it is fun but make sure you put everything back as it is!
