View Full Version : Endless virus scan

I've been having some computer problems lately and I thought maybe I had got a virus so I got a new virus scanner. I had previously had Norton AntiVirus and it didn't detect anything, but I decided to upgrade to Norton SystemWorks. SystemWorks says to reboot your computer using the cd as a restore disk and do a scan for viruses in dos before actually installing the program. I have tried to do this(multiple times in fact) but the scan never seems to end. My old scan would take at most an hour, and I have let this one run for 8+ hours while I sleep and it still won't finish. It never seems to get out of either Windows' "TEMP" file or Windows' Temporary Internet Files. My computer is constantly freezing up, prompting me with errors, and just in general isn't running very well. I just don't know what to do and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions or ideas for what could be causing this? Is this reason to use my system restore cd to bring back normal functions or what? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Post your comp. specs and we can help you better. Thanks. :)

Here's some generic advice though:

Update your drivers
Maybe it's a program you recently installed? Did you install any programs (besides SystemWorks) lately?
Download Spybot Search & Destroy (http://spybot.eon.net.au/) and see if some buggy spyware is the culprit. I had similar problems with an old Pentium II-266 Toshiba, and it turned out to be some spyware that was causing the thing to crash.

Hope this helps -- if not, post your specs and we'll dig a little deeper.

Oh, and if Norton AV didn't find anything, SystemWorks wouldn't either. SystemWorks is a suite of software that includes Norton AV. But be sure you have the latest definitions! (Download the definitions here (http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/download.html).)
