That is over the top. She must have really messed up her electrolyte balance somehow.
So now the radio station will be freaking because a silly game turned deadly and they will likely be sued.
Now her kids have no mum! :(

Wow! That's a real pisser.
Couldn't the radio station had run an Opy and anthony type contest and simply had the woman screw someone in St. Patrick's Cathedral?

That's probably exactly right.

I'll bet they settle out-of-court on this one.

Wow Vile that was a good article. Someone has already added her name to the list of people that have died due to water intoxication.

People are shooting each other to get PS3s, and killing themselves to get Wiis in radio contests.
Good time to be in that industry.

Yeah, those are good consoles...if you're 12 and live in the 80s.

any worse than gunfights in inner-city movie theaters, or getting trampled going to see The Who?
there's never been a shortage of stupid, and the supply seems endless.

Your cells absorb the water you drink, if you drink too much, your cells will literaly burst.

True to a degree.
OTOH, some would argue that those systems were about gaming and not just about the graphics generators that render 2 billion polygons per second.

And my understanding is it'll happen even faster if you consume distilled water.
Oh, and why isn't Robin Williams dead???

If not, then I wanna party with Robin.

Those games were rudimentary and silly. Little plotlines, minimal amusement, and terribly lacking in complex gameplay. The games of today are superior, unless you have a simple mind and enjoy shooting squares at bigger squares with no premise or reason to do so.

Part of the problem - but a major problem not listed in wikipedia is hypokaleamia (low potassium plasma levels). The loss of potassium will disturb the chemoelectric potentials not only your CNS but your muscles as well - especially your heart muscle cells. You'll get irregular beats eventually leading to cardiac arrest. I think it's the same strategy you use when executing people by lethal injection, only you give a very high contration of potassium. Even though busting cells sounds cool and serious it's not the major concern when hyperhydrated.
We had a female yoga student here in Denmark, who were on some sort of resort, getting her body "back into balance", by eating very little, drinking alot of water and getting her colon flushed regularly! The outcome was that she died from water intoxication a few days into her treatment. :( Let that be a lesson - don't put water hoses where they don't belong!

Kind of like Tetris or Klax, eh?

Maybe.
But then again, with games like "The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift", who am I to complain? I mean, seriously, where else can you find realistic racing gems that allow the "complex game play" of jumping buildings in a Honda Civic that shoots flame from it's exhaust pipe. And it looks really cool doing it, too......
I suppose the sophisticated "plotlines" and highly evolved "amusement" of today's games qualifies you to give the latest Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen "game" your nod of approval, which, mind you, isn't a game as much as it is a sack of black vaginas, but I digress; it's much better than, let's say, Pac Man.

Pac Man is a great game, especially from that time. The Fast and the Furious or any game featuring Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen are bad, nay, terrible games regardless of their time period.

Water drinking competition was never allowed in official eating competitions (see IFOCE (http://www.ifoce.com/)) because of this. Those hosts didn't do their homework. :hitout: If they were doing gatorade it'd have been ok.

I want to know how much she drank. Unless she had some pre-existing condition...this seems bizarre. How much could a woman consume in a short period of time?
People have to drink and hold lots of water for medical tests...sometimes six or more glasses...they don't die.

According to the wikipedia article,
"Consuming as little as 1.8 litres of water (0.48 gal) in a single sitting may prove fatal for a person adhering to a low-sodium diet, or 3 litres (0.79 gallons) for a person on a normal diet."
If she was a small person perhaps she could have needed less.

Good lord, I have drank a gallon of water in a single sitting on several occasions. I had no idea it was so dangerous.

She did have a disease where the body basically treats water like an alcoholic substance. Too much of it can cause someone to, in simple terms, become drunk.

I used to drink two 2 gallon cartons of water a day...
I think she probably drank about 20 times that amount in a few hours.
There were probably a few people there who were all competing VERY HARD for that Nintendo Wii...
Hope her kids got the game though :)

Those were on the SNES. Not the old Atari and Coleco consoles. SNES is my favorite system, so many good RPGs and adventure games.

Unless your name is Fatty McJenkins and you have a 40 gallon stomach, it is seems impossible for a human to ingest that much water in 3 or so hours.

Beat the heat! Drink water!
I remember being in Somalia, or haiti, or Panama, or anywhere for that matter, and before going on a patrol or mission we had to down a quart of water in one sitting. That about made me puke, i cant imagine pounding a gallon or more in one sitting

SNES was nice. XBOX 360 is the best console ever though (if you dont count the PC of course). I have played them all and that is my opinion.
