It's day two of the four-day ASEAN summit and it's being held in my backyard. Yep, we are this summit's host city. It should've happened late last year but due to terrible weather, what with storms and all, the event got postponed. While it's definitely something to be proud of, the media hype about what the summit will bring to us is both exhilirating and frustrating. Geez, I'm not in the mood to discuss about the "good" because frankly, I don't think it's much, except that the construction of a special convention center specifically for that purpose has buried us deeper into the pockets of foreign investors and made more politicians richer.
Oh okay, maybe I'm just bummed 'cause I feel caged. I can't go anywhere because public transportation within, around and through the venue and the hotel the diplomats and dignitaries are in, are blocked off for four days. And the traffic in alternate routes is worse than any I've ever seen.
The reason? Security. Hah! I've heard reports about threats, bomb threats to be specific, from obscure and not-so-surprising groups. That's not totally unexpected. Happens on any major event, even just a local fair. But when I thought about it, I ahd to smile at the irony of my own cryptic thoughts. I was like, gee, Terrorists at the Terrorists' summit? Okay, don't quote me on that! I just felt it odd that the countires represented in this ASEAN Summit - Brunei Darusalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam - include countries on the US Terror List. LOL, I was just wondering, would terrorists really mess up their own gathering? hmmm... Just a thought. And yeah, that's a little stupid. Or is it?
If you'd like to read more about the summit, google up! It's pretty hotstuff on Asian news these days.
