I am a very big fan of Homers tale "The Odessey". A very long tale that stretches from the Birth of Helen to the Homecoming of Odesseus (or Ulysses to some). Question is, for those that are familiar with it, do you believe there is any real truth to this story? Certainly there is reasonable doubt about the type of creatures Odesseus encountered throughout his long journey home, but as for the origins of the story itself, do believe any part of it? If so (or not) please explain the reason for your asnwer :)

Id say fiction, for sure. Maybe a slight base in reality, but mostly made up.

Umm homers "triology"? Please explain

And in answer to your question, it's a myth so basically made up, but I'm sure there is some truth in it.

Uhmm I'm not sure either. There is a collection called the Homeric Hymns, but not sure if that is what Dunkirk is refering to.

Well I can't answer about the rest of it. I know that for several years it had been assumed that some amateur german anthropologist had found concrete evidence for the city of troy and even that a major millitary campaign had occured. I believe it was in the 1870's, but really not that sure. But last I heard new evidence was being examined which might change that view.

Given that much of Homers work is believed by many to be collections of stories from the oral tradition, because writing was just catching on, there is probably some truth there. It is also quite likely to have been embroidered on to make a more entertaining story.

Uhmm I'm not sure either. There is a collection called the Homeric Hymns, but not sure if that is what Dunkirk is refering to.

Topic was made in reference to:

The Birth of Helen of Troy ( her trials and suitors as a living Goddess )

The Trojan war (which was fought because of her)

The Oddesey ( Ulysseys, his wife Penelope, and their 20 year trail of faith )

Well I can't answer about the rest of it. I know that for several years it had been assumed that some amateur german anthropologist had found concrete evidence for the city of troy and even that a major millitary campaign had occured. I believe it was in the 1870's, but really not that sure. But last I heard new evidence was being examined which might change that view.

I too have run across bits and pieces of information about this. "I believe that there was also a piece on this on "The History Channel once"

Here is a link to the Wikipedia article on Troy. Quite interesting. There are multiple cities on the same site, over many centuries. There are some indications confirming Homer's account, but nothing certain.
