I love both, but I'd rather have a dog!

Pretty sure dogs always love you and cats are sometimes too stubborn for my taste.

I voted for cats, because they take less work and are more independent. They don't require as much effort and attention as dogs, and they are smaller (don't even say anything about little tiny dogs, they might as well be cats...) and less messy.

10. Dogs come when you call them... Cats take a message and get back to you.

9. Dogs will let you give them a bath without taking out a contract on your life.

8. Dogs will bark to wake you up if the house is on fire... Cats will quietly sneak out the back door.

7. Dogs will bring your slippers or the evening newspaper... Cats might bring you a dead mouse.

6. Dogs will play Frisbee with you all afternoon... Cats will take a 3 hour nap.

5. Dogs will sit on the car seat next to you... Cats have to have their own private box, or will not go at all.

4. Dogs will greet you and lick your face when you arrive home... Cats will be annoyed that you went out at all.

3. Dogs will sit, lie down and heel on command... Cats will smirk and walk away.

2. Dogs will tilt their heads and listen whenever you talk... Cats will yawn and close their eyes.

1. Dogs will give you unconditional love forever... Cats will make you pay for every mistake you've ever made since the day you were born.

;)

I've always loved dogs. Growing up I've had about 3 dogs (I have no idea what breed they were, probably a little bit of everything). Now I don't own any, but my cousin owns a chihuahua. To some people they are annoying little freaks, but I love him. He's so playful, but sometimes he can be a pain.

Dogs are ugly.
Dogs are noisy.
Dogs are messy.
Dogs are high maintenance.

Such has been my experience with dogs.

Cats, on the other hand, do not fulfill the lies that dog lovers say they do.

EXCERPTS FROM A CAT'S DIARY

DAY 752 - My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while I am forced to eat dry cereal. The only thing that keeps me going is the hope of escape, and the mild satisfaction I get from ruining the occasional piece of furniture.

Tomorrow I may eat another houseplant.

DAY 761 - Today my attempt to kill my captors by weaving around their feet while they were walking almost succeeded, must try this at the top of the stairs. In an attempt to disgust and repulse these vile oppressors, I once again induced myself to vomit on their favorite chair...must try this on their bed.

DAY 765 - Decapitated a mouse and brought them the headless body, in attempt to make them aware of what I am capable of, and to try to strike fear into their hearts. They only cooed and condescended about what a good little cat I was...Hmmm. Not working according to plan.

DAY 768 - I am finally aware of how sadistic they are. For no good reason I was chosen for the water torture. This time however it included a burning foamy chemical called "shampoo." What sick minds could invent such a liquid? My only consolation is the piece of thumb still stuck between my teeth.

DAY 771 - There was some sort of gathering of their accomplices. I was placed in solitary throughout the event. However, I could hear the noise and smell the foul odor of the glass tubes they call "beer.." More importantly I overheard that my confinement was due to MY power of "allergies." Must learn what this is and how to use it to my advantage.

DAY 774 - I am convinced the other captives are flunkies and maybe snitches. The dog is routinely released and seems more than happy to return. He is obviously a half-wit. The bird on the other hand has got to be an informant, and speaks with them regularly. I am certain he reports my every move. Due to his current placement in the metal room his safety is assured. But I can wait; it is only a matter of time.

Dogs reward you with love and friendship
Dogs will protect you from any intruder
Dogs always listen to their owners
Dogs will play with you all day long
Dogs love humans
Dogs are cute!!!

If you are going to spend money on an animal, may as well make it an animal who will reward you with love. :)

No they don't. I've been attacked by a dog before despite what their owner was telling them to do.

Jeesh. Someone is getting defensive.

What the fuck is this? Cats do exactly that.
From having 3 cats and many dogs throughout my life I'd say dogs are far more rewarding in terms of love and friendship. Cats give you love when they want to and (from my experience) it is usually when they want food or to be let outside. I'm speaking in general terms and I find cats to be far more stubborn and not nearly as loving as dogs.

A gun does it better.
I believe we are talking about cats vs. dogs. Not dogs vs. guns.

No they don't. I've been attacked by a dog before despite what their owner was telling them to do.
Again, there are exceptions to the rule. However, most dogs obey their owners.

They are lazy the vast majority of the day.
Dogs play catch. Go on walks with you. Go to the park with you. Go on car rides with you. Sure, they are lazy the parts of the day you don't give them attention and ignore them. But whenever you want to play with them they are usually up for it. Even my older dog is usually up for playing with me. Cats however play with string and kill birds and mice.

So do cats. Both species are bred to be around humans.
I suppose so. But I don't think to the extent dogs do.

How? They're savage brutes.
So many dogs are cute! What are you talking about?

Honestly, this comes down to personal opinion. Personally, from being around both I'd say dogs are a far more rewarding, loyal and loving pets. Cats to me are stubborn and not nearly as loving and affectionate.

No they aren't. A dog is a dog, regardless of size. Small dogs will bark when someone is at the door, play catch with you and obey your commands. They just happen to be small and cute. Which is the best of both worlds IMO. They are small like a cat, which makes them forever cute, but they act like a dog (IE: loyal and a true companion who will do anything for their owner!)

Just look at my family's dog! It is FULL GROWN (but still small) and is loyal, fun, plays catch and barks whenever someone comes to the door!!!

I voted for cats because I currently have two kitties because that is what found me. Every animal that has ever owned me has been a cast off. They always have been abandoned or abused and have medical problems that cost a small fortune and they are always the most loyal and loving. They know you saved their furry ass.

Living in a condo limits me pet wise. I do not think it would be fair to have a large dog in a small space 8 floors up. I would have loads of cats, dogs, horses and anything else that needed to be fed and loved if I had the space. The more the better.

Beaten! I hate little dogs, yippy or not. They're small and weird. I've had three dogs and three cats. Two of those cats were far more truly loyal then all but one of those dogs. One of those cats just appeared one day and then disappeared a few years later. My favourite cat was a Chartreux and I have no idea what the other one was. The stray was a generic tabby. The three dogs were a Keeshond, some kind of terrier, and the current dog is a German Sheppard and Husky mix. The Keeshond was a rarity as it had a nearly perfect personality. Though any day I'd rather get a cat than dog.

I have a love to hate cats way about me..Reason allergic. Kittens are cute I will give you that but they put me in hospital after only a few hours so my hate of them is justified...
I love my dog. He may be a bed hog and steal my pillow from under my head but he loves unconditionally. He may hate going running with me for long periods of time but he will just lie down at the track and look at me, thinking to himself....Are you done yet? HeHe
He is also big and love to curl up on the couch with me and watch movies and not talk all the way through the show. He loves to be petted and protect me.
My dog has attitude. I agree small little dog are chew toys. They are timid, noisy and annoying. This is from experience I say this....not stereo typing.

I prefer frogs. They are cute. They eat flies. They don't take up much room. You can take them for a hop, especially when it is raining. If you get the right frogs you can use them to poison darts so you can kill your enemies. And if you get tired of them you can always eat their legs with a nice butter sauce.

That would be unwilling.

The fact that they are not as subservient to humans as dogs does not make them less intelligent than dogs. It could be argued by many that pigs are smarter than dogs, do you see pigs getting the paper?

A cat is intelligent enough to know when and in what amount to give you attention or whine in order to get what they want. Dogs are animals that are either lazy all the time or active and always give you attention. Neither choice is one I'd pick, and neither is indicative of intelligence.

From Straightdope.com...

Dear Cecil:

There are some (my girlfriend for one) who say cats are smarter than dogs, and others (I think most) who say that dogs are definitely more intelligent. Which is, and why? --Bruce T., Chicago

Dear Bruce:

Judging the relative intelligence of cats and dogs is like deciding which is better looking--there's just not much basis for comparison. Psychologists have a tough enough time coming up with a culture-blind IQ test for humans, who all belong to the same species; designing a species-blind test for dogs and cats is just about impossible. What people take to be signs of intelligence in their pets usually are just specialized survival skills that say nothing about innate brainpower. A cat, for instance, is much more dexterous with its paws than a dog. This dexterity fascinates cat lovers, who also cite the cat's legendary standoffishness as proof of its mental superiority. The dog, on the other hand, is much more of a social animal; dog advocates claim this proves the dog is more civilized, ergo, more intelligent.

Animal ethologists (they're the professionals in this line of work) regard such arguments as rubbish. Cats are loners because they have always hunted alone--one mouse won't feed more than one cat. Without his nimble paws, a cat couldn't corner, catch, and eat his prey. Dogs, though, hunted in packs because they picked on game bigger than they were. They used their teeth to kill their prey and dismember the carcass. (Admittedly, not all cats hunt alone--lions don't, for instance--but let's not make this discussion any more confusing than it already is.) Ethologists don't even like to weigh one breed against another, within the same species. If a bloodhound smells better, or a greyhound sees better--well, that's what they were bred for.

But surely, you cry, there must be some way to compare cats and dogs. Maybe, but it hasn't turned up yet. Obedience and trainability aren't considered reliable measures of intelligence. Newborn cats open their eyes a little sooner than dogs do, but the dog gets into solid foods sooner than the cat. Overall, puppies and kittens grow into adulthood at virtually identical rates. Mama cats toilet train their young, and mama dogs don't, but that doesn't prove anything. My advice is, go argue about something else.

Its obvious a cat is smarter than a dog. A cat wont fetch a stick, the way the cat probably looks at it is 'what the fuck for, so you can thro it away again', good thing about cats, they choose to live with you, unlike a dog.

Paul dear lol
Thanks for the laugh...YOU are so right my dog goes running with me and he goes for about an hour and anything over that he lies down and goes are you done yet kind of look. I got to the track and run now so that he can just sit and watch. hehehe
Still it is really scary going into the bathroom at my brothers and assface is on the toilet looking at you like give me a minute would you......

My cats won't fetch a stick, but they will chase the plastic caps from soda bottles or various small toys we've gotten for them and return them. They're also quite affectionate and enjoy being close. They probably listen to me as well as any of the dogs I've owned ever did.
I've heard of cats that will use the toilet and would love to teach that to any of mine. Ask your brother how he did it and if he's willing to share the technique.

Beautiful, es. I've always been partial to black cats especially--they're lucky.

I'd post pictures of our 2 dogs, Agamemnon ( shepherd-chow crossbred) and Beau (yellow Lab) but I'm at work.

Also have 2 cats, Sarang, an orange tabby, and Tabby, a gray tabby.

And a turtle, Pookey.:)

Those Persians look like they're up to something devious!

I have a black shorthair, and used to have a 30 lb Siberian. :P

If cats are so smart why do they spend hours chasing a light reflection on a wall?

I've always wanted a pet wolf. Your wolf sounds fascinating. What do you feed him?
Can you post a picture?
Our German shepherd/chow crossbred Agamemnon "Aggie" looks like a wolf--big and shaggy. He frightens people but he's a baby--but very protective.

Where did you get your wolf? I've heard tell they can be kinda skittish as pets but yours sounds wonderful.

Aaaaaaaaaaah, how cute are they??????????
Expensive little fuckers aren't they?

I may make a new white fur hat out of one of mine this year. Stylish. Might even leave the ears on. Boots for the other one. :D

I feed him high pro- dog food but he needs more than that so I get big beef bones from my butcher friend also when I have eggs we always put them in his dish as well with left over elk roast and such but he loves carrots as a treat. I have been trying to post a photo but im not very good at this computer stuff but im trying, I got him from a guy that raises them about twenty miles from me he was very selective about who got one he mad me walk through the pack to the alfa male and female and I guess If they didn`t like me i was lunch and i did not get one. I hand raised him since he was 31/2 weeks old i have my kids work with him A hour every day at first it was hard getting them to do it, but now its just like play time and helps them bond. Because in the end he is still a wolf and you have to respect that. He is not skiddish at all I do not lock him up or chain him up he is one of the family and is treated as such, he is awsome follows my kids everywhare.
