View Full Version : Christmas gifts!

So, what'd you get? What'd you give? Have any Christmas traditions?

Since I received my gifts this fine Christmas evening, I shall speak now. I got a subscription to 'The Economist', Viktor Frankl's book "Man's Search for Meaning", Neal Stephenson's novel "Cryptonomicon", and a video game. Fine gifts indeed.

So, how about you share what you got on this capitalist orgy of a holiday.

I'll have to wait for the morning to find out, but thanks for asking.

The "Big" gift I got was a brand new computer. I had to buy it and assemble the whole damn thing myself, but it was a road worth taking, dammit. I must say that I buy myself the best gifts. *breaking arm patting myself of the back.*

My girlfriend bought several smaller gifts. Gift certificates to the "Olive Garden" (I LOVE the Shrimp Alfredo Pasta and the Tuscan T-bone) and "Ruby Tuesday," also a gift subscription to "Maximum PC," a magazine I devour every single chance I get. She also introduced me to the concept of care packages. Which is a Christmas bag full of small items that people use from day to day. Socks, deodorants, beef jerky, chocolates, shaving supplies, beard trimmer an electric toothbrush. It doesn't SOUND like much, but when you start using the stuff every single day, you DO appreciate it. It's a hell of a lot better than getting a "Chia Pet" a tie that lights up or other novelty items that no one ever quite uses. She also got me two smoked pheasants from "Figi's" for my eating pleasure. My parents came through with the usual sweater I don't quite know what to do with a thing of chocolates and some nuts. My neighbors in my Condo gave me one rose plant I'm going to try to make live and a bag of these horrible Christmas candies. I appreciate the candies and the SPIRIT in which they are given, it's just too bad the candies aren't edible, dammit.

On the giving side, I gave my girlfriend a new set of brakes for her car. I also gave her tires on a previous Christmas. I'll agree with anyone who says that it's not the most romantic gift in the world, BUT she won't wind up in a ditch, which is a good thing with winter coming on, dammit. I also raided the "BJ's Wholesale Club" to get a care package for her. She loves walnuts and pistachios, so I got here a five pound bag of both plus a 2 pound bag of "Dove" chocolates, which she loves, a half dozen pairs of panties, socks, pantyhose (I just LOVED buying those) shaving stuff, deodorants (remember this IS "BJ's" so she got a LOT of these things) plus a couple pairs of pants she liked and sweaters.

My family all got gift certificates and phone cards, for two reasons. First off, I have no idea what to buy them, secondly they will USE those damn things.

Sometimes shopping is tough and waiting till the last minute turned out to be a bad idea, dammit.

All in all though, it was a good Christmas.

I'm halfway through Cryptonomicon myself and, well, you know the other reason why.So, how about you share what you got on this capitalist orgy of a holiday. Not being as ambitious as Darth I went out and bought a computer that was already put together. Still got a pretty good deal though, and I am absolutely thrilled with it.

I got a laptop from my parents, about a month ago actually, and also some other small gifts, but I won't know what those are until tomorrow (with the exception of a pair of shoes with cute little rainbow colored octopuses all over them that we bought at the mall today...) I think I also got a new pair of headphones, or I hope I did, since mine broke.

An outstanding book!!!!

I gave him two sweaters, leather gloves, and a manicure and pedicure. I got chocolates, a massive sparkly poinsettia plant, toboggan pants for walking, a new calico-kitty calendar, a cordless bedside telephone...and the one that made me cry was a new cell phone because my old one was so old and big and I totally did not expect that one along with everything else.

It is weird outside today. A green Christmas with heavy fog. Glad Santa had Rudolph last night.

This morning all I have to do is finish my coffee and get the potatoes ready for cooking later.

Frogger, take a look at the date, and stop being a ridiculous asshole. Now is not the time to be childish and petty. It's the time to spread happiness.

As for the actual topic of the thread, take a look at this puppy (http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Digital-5-Piece-Speaker-Subwoofer/dp/B0002WPSBC/ref=pd_ybh_a_4/102-5272812-3419326). Can't wait to get back to my dorm where my computer is and try 'em out!

I gave my bride a trip to NYC with her favorite niece.
(Well that, and some new boots & a sweater.)
They traveled to and from this past week, for an early Christmas with the daughter up there in the city.

Our Christmas together here at home was a low-key affair, spent with visiting family members. Good food, good fellowship, and very few actual gifts exchanged. Funny how when you get older, it's less about the presents and more about spending some time together with the people you love.

Well I got an MP3 player, some new Steeler gear, new reeboks, a new wallet, the movie Big Daddy (not my favorite, but it's the thought that counts), an Old Spice gift pack (cologne and deoderant). All in all a pretty good day on the material side of things.

On the family front I didn't do so well. My niece announced last night, she didn't like any of us and wasn't coming over. Then we went to my mom's and that went okay, but then we went to my aunt and uncle's. As usual my aunt & uncle, were such glorious hosts; my wife isn't speaking to me at the moment. And I've been warned she will not go there ever again. Family can't live with them, can't chop them into pieces and feed them to the alligators. Merry freaking Christmas.

Pendragon,

I got a three level toolbox, a leaf blower, a jewelry chest disguised as a book, two shirts, three books, three frog ornaments, a vibrating chair back that can be used in the home and in the car, and an oxy/aceteline torch.

I recieved many shirts (5), and a box of assorted cheeses. Also several gift cards. The shirts are pretty useful, since I never get around to buying clothes myself. The cheese assortment will be handy for munching during bowl games/ playoffs.

Sure I've been back to the doctor and taken antibiotics. I may be a bit slow but I'm not a complete idiot. It's just not healing the way it should. And now to top that off, I have to return something to Sears and my receipt has disappeared. I had it out on my bathroom sink as a reminder and I think one of the grandkids must have taken it. It's a double bummer because I need that receipt for a $50 rebate.

Welcome to the day after Christmas.

I am not going anywhere today...when you find the receipt, I would likely still retire to the den (alone) today if I were you. You might kill someone out there....purposely Okay that first sentence takes the cake for awkward but TS... I am gonna whine allllllllll day.

Well this Christmas didn't turn out to be that good. Even so I got a computer. Unlike Darth I didn't build it, but I bought it from CyberPower PC. Which basically means that someone else built it for me. I am prepared to be amazed as my computer is 6 years old, and very very slow. Horrible, and this was the time to upgrade. I am looking forward to it. I don't know if anybody cares about specs, but here they are.

Sal, I got an appointment with the foot doctor. Her first words after looking at the foot were, "That hole is much deeper than I would like." Her next words were, you have to start wearing the surgical shoe again, you may not drive and you might have to postpone leaving for Florida."

Not a very good day.

Ew...that is indeed not a good day! Sorry to hear that. :( Um, I guess you do not like the surgical shoe. (Not Santa's "best ever" present). Florida is stormy...stay home. Did you find the receipt?

About the DVD thing, I asked my girlfriend yesterday, and she said her life is so hectic and stressed that sometimes she just wants to watch something light and fluffy and mindless where she knows the ending. Makes her destress.

I just feel like I am burning up time on earth doing the same thing over again. I won't read the same book twice either. Waste of numb bum to me. And I get bored sooooooooo easily.

Luckily, we're all different. Thanks for the different perspectives though.
