It's not the fall that's so bad, it's just the sudden stop at the end.

I wonder what was going thru his mind on the way down.
Apart from very fast air.

So what is standard operating procedure if your parachute(s) fail? I mean, do you aim for the water, trees, side of a hill? Or just pray all the way to the ground?
That guy is lucky as hell though, I mean its not everyday that you hear about someone surviving something like that. I was under the impression that it had never happened but maybe it has before.

Now that was a bizarre and fascinating read! The fact that thousands of people have survived very long falls was a surprise. Also it sounds like a fall from a plane gives one a better opportunity for survival than a short fall because you can plan better.
I read the woods and survival one as well.
When we did a thread about it, I was the only one out seeking water. But they stress that within two days your body will be in bad shape without water. After three days you will die. Water is undervalued until there is none.

Man falls nearly 17 stories at downtown Minneapolis hotel
Associated Press
MINNEAPOLIS - A man fell nearly 17 stories from a window at the Hyatt Hotel on Nicollet Avenue in Minneapolis last night.
The man apparently broke through a window on the 17th floor. He fell and landed on a balcony just above the first floor.
Authorities rescued him from the balcony. The extent of his injuries wasn't immediately known but officials say the man survived the fall.
A hotel manager says the man was a guest at the Hyatt.
Police are investigating what may have led to the fall.

It's amazing how robust the human body can be, and also how frail it can be in other situations.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess "alcohol."Yeah, I wonder if he was doing a Pierre Bezukhov. If so, that may have helped him survive -- sort of like those head on collisions where everyone dies except the guy who was drunk.

It has also been shown that people who jump intentionally and those who are intoxicated at the time of the fall have disproportionately higher survival rates than fall victims in general.
That's kinda funny in a very bizarre way :@@:
