In the near future -- Aircraft Carriers will be of little to no consequence in an all-out war. Future wars will be fought with long-range, deadly-accurate missles and drones.

The thought of there being no aircraft carriers bothers me, somehow.
Maybe I'm just being nostalgic, I dunno, but carriers and their crews are like the biggest, baddest, kickass fighting "machines" we've ever come up with, and they do get the job done - I'd hate to see them go the way of the dodo.
And while I know that technology marches ever onward, it's also hard for me to believe such an effective and powerful weapon would become obsolete. Seems to me there will always be a need for carriers, if only to serve as a seagoing platform for aircraft to take off and land. Missles and drones can only do so much, though. You'd still need humans in the relative vicinity of a major conflict, wouldn't you?
The main Wiki page about carriers indicates that there are several nations designing and building new carriers, so I think it'll be awhile before they're completely gone. Whew!

That was pretty much the case 30-40 years ago. But until all-out war, they're nice to have around.

Carriers are just an essential part of every country's defense that borders the ocean, just like roads are for vehicles to travel on. They won't go away anytime in the forseeable future.

I wouldn't be surprised if they did turn up with one, one of several that they've been hiding from the world for decades. I fugure that if they are smart enough to send an astronaut (or tekanaut) into space, they should be smart enough to build a carrier of some sort :@@:

Yes, and those can all throw up a pretty heavy curtain of missiles in defense. Dop's correct though, shoot enough missiles at the carrier and something will get through. Or just use a nuke and get it over with.

The Phalanx CIWS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phalanx_CIWS)(Close-in weapon system pronounced see-wiz) is an anti-missle system that was designed and manufactured by the General Dynamics Corporation, Pomona Division. It is now manufactured by the Raytheon Company. It is used by the United States Navy on every class of surface combat ship in its fleet and is used by navies of over twenty allied nations. Because of their distinctive barrel-shaped radome and their automated nature of operation, Phalanx CIWS units are sometimes nicknamed R2-D2s, after the famous droid from Star Wars.

The following countries currently have aircraft carriers in operation:
United States- 24
UK- 4
France- 2
Russia, Italy, India, Brazil, South Korea, Spain, and Thailand each have one carrier currently operational.
As to the statement that the french carrier was the first and only one not designed or built in the United States, that's just wrong. The British designed the first aircraft carrier, the HMS Hermes, and she was commissioned in 1923. The Japanese also designed and built all their own carriers. Of the modern carriers, Britain, France, Italy, Spain, and Russia all design and build their own ships. The carrier operated by Thailand is of Spanish design and manufacture.

I think the French carriers are the only ones not built in the U.S. that resemble the American ones in using conventional aircraft with catapults, although I think the UK was going to go back to that design since Harriers can't do everything.

The Russians? Well, let's just say it all looks good on paper.
Prae, where the Russian weapon systems go wrong is not in the making and designing of the weapons. The weapons themselves are top-notch. Where they go wrong is the execution. The Russians simply cannot field a fighter pilot to match the quality of ours. We have real life training in real jets. The Russkies cannot afford such a thing, and never really was able to.
You know the old joke about the space race: The US spent billions of dollars designing the perfect pen to write in space, millions of man-hours spent testing different designs, and finally succeeded, a marvel of American ingenuity. The Russians used a pencil.
The joke was just that, a joke, because broken pencil leads are horrible things to have flying around the insides of space ships. But it is a good analogy to the way Russians did things and the way we still do things. They can design all these wonderful, fantastic things, only to bungle them in real-life operation, because they never appreciated the necessity of training.
Those quiet, diesel submarines that the Russians operate never stood a chance against American subs. In theory, they should be on a relatively level playing field. But Russians never got the knack of training their sub crews to the level of ours, not to mention funding and readiness issues.
I do believe though, that a Russian army would eat ours for breakfast.

Yeah, just like they did the Afghani "army", right?
Look....the Russians have DICK on us. Our military is proven; we kill more effectively and efficiently than any other fighting force on this planet by a factor of 10. That isn't up for debate - it's a solid fact, my friend. Very solid, at that.
Nation building, OTOH...well, we're not so good at that, and if not to add insult to injury, we've also managed to folly every conflict that's been fought by our politicians (a saddening trend, but unfortunately, one that's there to please myopic, unrealistic isolationists (which, mind you, has become an American necessity, I'm afraid - but I digress)).

Maybe we should outsource the nation building tasks, like we've done with "technical assistance". As you noted, we're real good at kicking ass, that is unquestioned. When our military is turned loose to do what they do, there's nobody currently who can go toe-to-toe with us.

It's not that they can't stop the missiles Dop, it's that the chances are a bit slimmer. During the Cold War, Russia developed weapons systems that were designed specifically to penetrate the defense systems of American carrier battle groups. They knew what kind of defenses we had so they developed larger and faster missiles than we did out of neccessity. One problem the Russians faced with these larger missile systems was that their size limited the platforms on which they could be carried. The Russians fielded the SS-22 Sunburn missile, and the SS-29 Shipwreck only on their largest and most sophisticated naval vessels, and even if Russia started selling these missiles with abandon, anyone contemplating their use would face the same problems. Only a very modern naval vessel is capable of launcing such a missile, and those are currently only possessed by a very few nations.

The Sunburn and other russian anti-ship missles can be fired from shore batteries ... Iran has several of them as does China and probably others.
Sunburn or similar missles have never been tested against our CIWS (Phalanx for example) so there is no absolute proof one way or the other but from what I've read and personally heard from my own inner-circle, the U.S. will not make claims that our systems could handle a sunburn-type attack.
The math is simple ...
CWIS requires X time to acquire a solution
Sunburn offers Y time to gather a solution
X - Y > 0 (a positive number) therefore ...
CIWS loses, Sunburn wins.
This isn't rocket science :D
There is also the option of simply overpowering Phalanx or whatever. You may want to watch the movie The Sum of all fears for a demonstration of how a handfull of Russion fighers took out an american carrier simply by firing more missles than the carrier defenses could handle. Granted, it's Holloywood and probably not precisely what would happen in real life but the point remains ... anything can be overpowered and that is how the Russians will be playing the game from here on out. No more trying to match the U.S. ruble-for-dollar until they go bankrupt, but instead, simply become unbeatable because of a strong defense. The philosophy would be "I don't have the capability of attacking a well-armed nation but if one should attack me, I have the capability of dishing out some serious a$$-kicking."
