On another thread, Es 347 fan asked me what i like about America. Since some people here seem to believe I hate the USA, I think it is time to settle this once and for all !

I've only been once in the USA, for christmas 98. We were invited by a friend who lives in Florida to spend the christmas holiday with her (a very nice old lady indeed). We met many nice people there, but I must confess I found Florida a litlle bit boring, except for Miami. I specially enjoyed the Art Deco district there (I love Art deco architecture !).

If I could go back to the USA, I would rather visit New-York, San Francisco or New England. I hope I will have the opportunity to go in NY since my american publisher is there.

And now here is a small list of american people and things I like :

Iggy Pop and Prince
Stanley Kubrick and Tim Burton
Art Spiegelman and Daniel Clowes
Martin Luther King and Ralph Nader
ER and "Six feet under"
Franklin Roosevelt and Jimmy Carter
John Fante and Jim Harrison
tomato ketchup and coca cola
Francis Scott Fitzgerald and Gary Larson
The MacIntosh and Dungeons&Dragons
Cameron Diaz and Jodie Foster
The Doors and Ella Fitzgerald
The MOMA and the Great Canyon
Noam Chomsky and S.J. Gould
John Cassavetes and Woody Allen

and… I almost forgot…
The Marx Brothers.

How about this? It's really nice that America is our ally. If not, we would probably be speaking german here in gay paris right about now?

It is really nice that america is full of good hearted individuals, some of whom sacrificed their lives so that the french could have their own country?

Yeah i know, since that happened a whopping 60 odd years ago it doesnt count anymore does it?

If i were to make a list of things i like about France, i would certainly include the fact that you guys helped us in the Revolutionary War. And that was hundreds of years ago.

Yes Havok, you are right. I am also grateful for the Marshall Plan that helped rebuild a safe and prosperous Europe.

I could also have added Dylan, Kerouak and the beatnick movement, and the thousands of american people who protested against the war in Iraq to what I like in America.

You've only seen a touch of Florida, so you've so much more to explore on another visit. There's a few really unique cities here: San Francisco and it's charms, San Antonio with it's River Walk, New Orleans & the French Quarter, Atlanta and the Underground. Be sure to visit Austin where you can hear some of the best live music anywhere. Don't pass up other scenic charms - Niagara Falls where Canada & the U.S. meet, the Grand Canyon, the Badlands of the Dakotas--so much to see & do. Forget the politics!

I like how America stands together when trouble arise. They may have their differences but when push comes to shove they all come together like a family. To me that is beautiful.

Is there anything you like about America's government?

The present government, to be honest, not much. But I admit it seems a good decision to finally send troops in Liberia. I also appreciate that Bush decided to fund the fight against AIDS in Africa. And, even if I doubt it will have results, I wish the best to the roadmap to peace in Middle East.

You see, I am not so predictable after all…
