They both sold out, but which one originally sold to more gamers?
My vote is the Wii, but I have to admit, was somewhat surprised the PS3 sold even 400k. Thought the price tag was a sure killer.

I honestly could not care less about either of them.

Perhaps in the frog like tradition, you are accurately predicting the 2nd demise of the home console market.

The Wii is more oriented for casual gamers if I recall correctly. Either way, I want them both.

Sony have the biggest brand name, so will win the battle in the next gen war.

PS is a way better system. For the hardcore gamers and those who just like to be tech savvy it's the best bet. The wii is a novelty, cheap and cute. It'll do well for awhile, but mark my words, the PS3 will kick the crap outta it in the long run.

The Playstation has definitely been a strong brand for a long time, and it doesn't seem to be letting up now.

Yes it does. The PS3 is flashy and all that, but Sony has had manufacturing difficulties with it, and it's way too expensive. There also aren't very many games out for it right now, granted though that it's still at launch.
The Wii will outsell it, and I think the PS3 is ultimately going to be a net loss for Sony. The PS3 is a sell for "hardcore" gamers mostly, and even some of us (e.g. me) don't want one. I want a Wii, however.

It seems to me that there are a lot of those "hardcore" gamers... I just don't like the Wii because of it's name. I mean, really. WII??

Aye, it is a dumb name. Awesome console, however.

I've been reading various articles lately about people destroying their TV sets with the Wii. The hand wand seems to have a very weak strap, and people have been getting alot more excited with it than its design engineers had planned on. They are swinging the wand around so hard that the strap breaks and it goes flying out of their hand straight through their Television Sets

I'm not surprised after watching my nephews jump around with the old fashioned controllers.

The Wii already has outsold the PS3, by about 500,000 units. Then again, we don't actually know when more PS3s will be made, and most of the ones already out, don't work. I'm certain that the Wii will show us that people will take something interesting over a PS2 with slightly better graphics. I mean hell, the 360s graphics are AMAZINGLY better than the PS3. And the Sony had forever after the 360s release to make something better. It's kind of funny that they failed. Oh well, Sony has been going downhill for years and the PS3 will either kill or make their company. I'm betting kill. I don't want one, don't want to play one ever again after that one time in Best Buy, and I am most CERTAINLY getting a Wii sometime hopefully soon.

Nintendo investigating Wii strap problem By YURI KAGEYAMA, AP Business Writer
Thu Dec 7, 6:58 AM ET
TOKYO - Nintendo's president acknowledged Thursday the just-launched Wii video-game machine may have a problem with a strap that secures its trademark wandlike remote-controller to the player's wrist.

President Satoru Iwata also said Nintendo may raise its sales target for the Wii, which is selling out at retailers since it went on sale in recent weeks in the U.S. and Japan.
The console from the maker of the Pokemon and Super Mario games is locked in a fierce three-way battle with Sony Corp (NYSE:SNE - news).'s PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360.
"We are investigating," Iwata said of reports about the Wii's strap coming off as players swung around the controller, at times causing the remote to fly out of their hands.
Players use the Wii remote like a tennis racket, sword and other devices to play games.
"Some people are getting a lot more excited than we'd expected," Iwata said. "We need to better communicate to people how to deal with Wii as a new form of entertainment."
The company has not decided on any specific measures to change the strap, Nintendo spokesman Yasuhiro Minagawa said.
Iwata said he first wants to see how Christmas sales go before revising Nintendo's sales target for 6 million Wii consoles by the end of March.
"I'm not ruling that out entirely, but it's premature to say it now," he said at the Foreign Correspondents Club in Tokyo.
Nintendo has delivered more machines so far to consumers than Sony Corp. has, partly because of Sony's production problems.
Nintendo has shipped about 400,000 Wii machines in Japan and more than 600,000 in North America. The machine went on sale Thursday in Australia and is set to go on sale Friday in Europe.
Sony readied just 100,000 PlayStation 3 machines for the Japan launch, and 400,000 consoles for its U.S. debut. Its European launch has been pushed back until March.
Sony has promised 2 million PS3 machines by the end of the year, while Nintendo is targeting 4 million in global shipments of Wii during the same period. Both Sony and Nintendo are projecting selling 6 million by the end of March.
Selling machines in numbers is crucial in the gaming business because hot-selling formats attract software companies to make more games, which in turn boost machine sales.
Iwata denied that Nintendo was competing against Sony. It's more important to attract novice players and to reach out to older people and others usually not associated with games, he said.
Analysts say Wii appeals to inexperienced players and has a price advantage at 25,000 yen or $250 — about half of the PlayStation 3.
Analysts expect Wii to mount a serious challenge to market-leader Sony, which has sold more than 200 million PlayStation series machines worldwide over the years, although they say the verdict on next-generation machines is still out for a couple of years.
Sony is expecting to rack up 200 billion yen ($1.7 billion) in red ink in its game unit for the fiscal year ending March 2007, much of it in startup costs for PlayStation 3.
Nintendo is forecasting profit of 100 billion yen ($845 million) for the fiscal year, as Wii buoys earnings in the second half.

Everyone I know who got a PS3 only got it to turn around and put it up on ebay.
Of course, none of them made the profit they were hoping for.

LOL :D
I went to Toys R Us a few days ago and was really shocked to see that they actually had quite a few Wii units still sitting on the shelves. I myself didn't buy one because I spent all of my money on everyone else. I'll go shopping for myself after Christmas when the after holidays sales start :)

just go down to Target and see what you can buy off the shelf. I know I have been looking for a Wii for months. I have to push the PS3's out of the way to see if there are any Wii's behind them. Sony has a good spin machine, thats about it. Until PS3 games blow away XBOX 360 games graphically, no one will spend an extra 300 bucks to get one. By then it will be over. Sony rolled the dice an dlost, learning the lesson learned by Nintendo years ago when the Playstation 1 took over the console market: name alone isnt everything.
