Who's your favorite band?

I like Queen..

Hard to say depends on the time in my life.

I'm approaching 40 so it varies. When I was young and full of piss and vineagar, heavy metal ruled. (no not hair metal)

My favorite at the time was Judas Priest followed closely by Ozzy and Iron Maiden. Then I finally discovered some american talent Queensryche.

This was soon followed by the greats of Mettallica (i.e. prior to the black album) Megadeth, and so on. At first I resisted Nirvana, but damn man talent wins every time.

However as I matured so did my music tastes. I found a true love of the the old school rock, and hard rock.

Queen is a good choice, definately up there. I also love Styxx, Foreigner, Boston, and the like.

Despite my hard rock/heavy metal roots, my favorite singer/songwriter of all time is Billy Joel.

My favorite artist is Johnny Cash, hands down... I guess Guns N Roses and Lynyrd Skynyrd are pretty high up there, and then there's The Offspring, The Vandals, Nirvana, Sublime, and The Red Hot Chili Peppers too...

So many great bands, an abundance of choices! Rush is always a favorite as are the Greatful Dead and Led Zepplin, but I could fill a page with those that have been favorites through one or two songs or one album. And no list is ever complete, as I always forget somebody.

When I was in college it was no contest. The Stones all the way. What a band to drink, dance and make out to.

Nowadays I'm kind of partial to The Donnas. Great, raw, sound, slightly reminiscent of Joan Jett when she was singing Put Another Dime In The Jukebox and Bad Reputation.

When it comes to country my favorite singer is the same as DarkFantasy's. I also like Kentucky Headhunter. But then again I like all country music. It is my favorite after Doowop.

I'm slowly getting more and more into country... I laughed when someone told me they "hate country", when they had previously professed their love for Johnny Cash. And then they protested Johnny's belonging in the genre of country!

Back in the day I had the Queensryche original EP through Empire. This was in the heady days of cassettes. With CD's I kept Empire, and Operation Mindcrime, and then I bought their greatest hits album a couple of years ago. Promised land was lent to me and I liked some of it, but a lot of it let me down. Wasn't what I wanted from them.

The Beatles, of course, if it weren't for them none of you would be enjoying the 60's, 70's, 80's and whatever bands are good today. If it weren't for them you'd be stuck listening to crap like the Bobby's, and the Suzie's, and the Elvis's. All the crap that those who were against Rock N' Roll in the 50's wanted your parents to listen to.

Little Richard, Elvis, Chuck Berry, Hank Williams and others from the 50's built the bridges forging rock & roll, blending country, gospel and blues into a style of music that lives on and on. Their music is played daily on radio stations world wide. Fledging musicians are even today copying those guitar licks and drum rolls & making them their own. Where Michael Jackson fits into that crowd I'm really not certain. Yes, Jackson sold countless records and did produce great shows & videos, where is his music heard today? Is there such a thing as "classic" Michael Jackson?

Decka
12-12-2006, 03:53 PM
Elvis was popular.. but mainly a visual symbol. The only reason he was famous was because he "shook his hips".. and started being physical and sexual, or at least suggesting it.

We have seen countless "music" performers become quite popular without being very much musicians at all... and relying on their looks to get them "over". (Elvis, "Hair Bands" in the 80's, Ringo, Madonna, Emo bands today, Nsync, Jessica Simpson, Brittany Spears, etc.. the list goes on and on)

All over the world people predominantly listen to pop music, and Jackson isn't called the "King of Pop" for no reason. In a few more years Jackson may be considered "classic."

I don't see how it's possible to overrate the Beatles. You can overrate John Lennon, or Paul McCartney. Or maybe Ringo Starr or George Harrisson(just because nobody speaks about them). But as a whole they pretty much singlehandedly(or eighthandedly) created cultures and genres. Who did they rip off of when they created Sgt. Peppers Lonely Heart Band? A genre nearly in and of itself. Highly influential in psychadelic rock and even folk rock. Who were they're influences for Revolution No. 9, arguably the first Heavy Metal song? Elanor Rigby and goth rock? They had a lot of bad pop songs, but I don't see at all how they could be overrated for creating songs that created genres.

I don't deny that they contributed greatly to music... but trying to give the Beatles credit for "playing the first heavy metal song" or creating "goth rock"??? THAT is stretching it a tad.. i mean.. what's next, are we going to say Frank Sinatra created "Crunk Rap Music" because he talked about drinking?

The Clash Band............

Hard-hitting songs like "London Calling" and "Should I Stay Or Should I Go" made The Clash one of the most famous punk bands of the 1970s. Once too radical for radio, The Clash became a pillar of modern-day rock. The band's members were: Joe Strummer (b. John Mellors, 21 August 1952, Ankara, Turkey, d. December 2002), guitar and vocals; Paul Simonon (b. 1956, London), bass; Mick Jones (b. 26 June 1955, London), guitar and vocals; and Nicky Headon (b. 1956, Dover, England), drums. The Clash was formed in 1976 (at the time with drummer Terry Chimes) and released their self-titled debut album in 1977...

My favorites are REM, Beatles, AC/DC, Billy Joel, Eric Clapton, JayZ, Outkast, Missy Elliot, Ramones, Rancid, VU, Sheryl Crow, Simon & Garfunkel, Beach Boys, Nirvana, Lynyrd Skynyrd...maybe U2, Led Zep, Elton John, Hendrix, CCR, the Cure, Aerosmith, Rammstein, Smashing Pumpkins, The Who, Weezer, The Doors, Coldplay, Red Hot Chili, The Shins, Sonic Youth, The Killers, Rolling Stones, and Grateful Dead.

I am only considering band/musician who have at least 5 songs that I enjoy tremendously. Some bands do have 1 or 2 songs I really love, but since I don't like the rest of their work much, they don't make it to "favorite band" list.

Top 3 will be REM, Beatles, and VU. But I love all those I just named.

You just can't beat The Stones. Been around forever. I used to dance to them when I was in college and that was before most of you were born.

Beatles are probably the best band musically. The way they grew from, I Wanna Hold Your Hand to Norwegian Wood is amazing.

Other great groups, Pink Floyd, (any album but especially Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall), Doors, Ramones (changed the face of music), Rammstein (especially Du Hast), Ladysmith Black Mambazo (love their melodic voices), Brooklyn Bounce (great bass), Mannheim Steamroller (more a mini orchestra than a band but Chip Davis is great), Paul Oakenfold (great trance music, wonderful beat), Black Sabbath (Smoke On The Water is great but War Pigs is even better). Gipsy Kings ( a lot of people don't like them but they are great with the top down and the volume turned up.

I've got to go with REM just slightly edging out The Stones and CCR. I like a band that doesn't record a song unless its a good one. REM, IMO, does that better than anyone.

Sigur Ros, Opeth, The Mars Volta, The Decemberists, Radiohead, Rage Against the Machine, Muse, and Apocalyptica would be my favorites.

The Decemberists

Ah, the band that owes any thread of notoriety to Steven Colbert. Did you catch their guitarist getting punked out by Peter Frampton?

they are a totally new act (i think). I went and saw them at The Cat Club, and they blew doors down. Good to see that Rock live is Los Angeles!

Oh come on, you can't put Elvis in the same category as Britney Spears, or even Madonna.

And, might I remind you all, The Beatles were the 60s equivalent of The Backstreet Boys when they came out. ;) Urgh, sorry to bring up an old posting but I had to comment. Saying that the Beatles were the 60s equivalent of the Backsreet Boys is totally ridiculous!!!!

Of course they were. When they first became famous, they had a huge fan base made up mostly of giddy young girls, they made music that was very popular and appealed to the common denominator. Just like the Backstreet Boys. What's so ridiculous about that?

A lot of guys love the Beatles to and I don't think the Backstreet Boys had nearly that many male fans like the Beatles.

Yes, they played their own instruments... I think you are speaking in present tense and I am speaking about the past. Notice that in both of my posts I was talking specifically about when the Beatles first became famous. I was not talking about how influential they became later or how many fans they have now.

And who says the Backstreet Boys aren't talented? I'd like to see you sing and dance like they do. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's not talent... I don't really enjoy emo music but I don't go so far as to say that emo singers and musicians have no talent just because I don't happen to like their music.

(And BTW, I like The Beatles. I don't like the Backstreet Boys. You seem to not know that so I thought I'd tell you.)

Yeah, I can see how you would think that... Perhaps I should have separated my thoughts a bit better. Sorry. I'm just in a really bad emotional place lately and I feel like everyone hates me... I don't hate you and doubt if anyone else here does. Allthough I can see people disagreeing with you when you compare the Beatles with the Back Street Boys just because young girls go crazy at their concerts. Sometimes people go crazy for a band or singer when they see them live. But to compare them for that reason is not enough to call the Beatles the Back Street Boys of the 60's.
