The Queen is 80 years old and has been on the throne over 50 years. This is very gracious of her to honor Jamestown in this way. She's a good woman who I respect and has been a good Queen. I't be wonderful to attend the ceremony.

Funny you should say that, because when I read this thread title I thought about the disgusting fact that England still has a Queen.

I disagree. They are a link to the past and for all their faults do provide a tradition to hold onto.

I agree. Like Lionel though, I expected the bashing to begin almost immediately.

It's a repulsive tradition that places the value of several human beings above all others in that nation for the mere fact that they were born of that blood.
Links to the past need not be upkept when the traditions of a culture are so silly.

IF you get a great majority of the planet's population to agree with you then you might induce change. Until then, it's only one individual's opinion.

I'm willing to bet that the majority of the planet cares not for monarchy.

I suspect the majority doesn't care one way or the other. The only ones affected are those living in a country where royalty exists. That's a minority of the planet.

I've read that the huge majority of the English are very fond of the Queen and their royal tradition in general. The idea of no royalty is anathema to them and besides, it's a thousand year tradition that's stood the test of time.
(But, they might feel differently when Charles the Simple takes the throne. then, they'll just have to wait until Good King Wills is crowned.)
I suspect there's many a folk who are secret royalists. They do have that certain charisma....some of them. It's the idea of chivalry, knights, liegemen, castles, jewels, all that good stuff. Excalibur, King Arthur, etc.
Besides, if they don't like this particular royal family, they can always get rid of them and put someone else on the throne. It's been done before.

The main reason the British like royal institutions is because it shows they aren't French.

Well shit then nobody must care about anything then since they will ALWAYS be a minority because there are always more then 2 choices...sigh.
Those who wish to be free of monachic rule should be allowed such. Anything else is anti-thetical to freedom.
The Tongons are pretty pissed with the king at the moment.

When someone can propose a more acceptable form of government we may change. Off-hand I cannot think of any Monarchy that has been abolished, except by revolution. Interesting to remember that, initially, the American Revolution did not wish to abolish the Monarchy.
The British Monarchy has been continually modified and changed over the past millennium. We even tried a different form of government for a short period. So far it's been proven the best.
