My favorite is The Little Mermaid. For 10-15 years Disney had not made a blockbuster hit until The Little Mermaid was released to theaters. It revived the Disney magic and since then Disney has had success after success. The Little Mermaid won an Academy Award for its music and countless other awards.
Personally I liked the story and the message it sent. You could actually relate to how Ariel felt, in terms of not being allowed to do what you want because of your parents. Overall, I just thought this movie had everything a Disney movie needs. Good music, a charming story, wonderful animation and a good message.

Overdose ! What mauvais goût.
Obviously the right choice is Snow White, possibly Dumbo, Fantasia (only for a few sequences) or The Sleeping Beauty. All the other movies from this list are at least kitsch, at worst totally crap.
What - snob, me ?

I agree with astrapol2. The true Disney movies ~ the ones Walt Disney had control of ~ are some of the best animations ever done. My choice was Cinderella, but it was a toss-up.

What a hard question. But I am a product of the 90s, so Lion King is held in high esteem.

My absolute favourite Disney movie is The Sword in the Stone, but that wasn't on the list, and second place is Aladdin anyways. I love Robin Williams.

Oh yeah, I love Sword in the Stone. But it isn't my favorite film by Disney.

I don't think it can be so black and white, as to say that the only good Disney movies were the one's Walt Disney himself had control over. That isn't giving the other movies a chance right from the start.
Anyway. Thanks for voting everyone! I've been a bit Disney obsessed for awhile now. :p

With the exception of The Little Mermaid, I've seen all the movies listed, and they're all good. There are other Disney movies that could have easily been added to the list. The hand painted artistry in the Walt Disney movies is what makes them better. Comparing the two styles is tough due to the available technology. For many years I heard that Fantasia was supposed to be so good, but that Disney had locked it away. Finally it was re-released and I rushed to the nearest theater to view it. I was truly disappointed. Here I was sitting in a fancy movie theater with Dolby whatever sound system, screen the size of a house waiting for this flick I've heard about ... seemingly my entire life ... then it comes on the screen. What may have been fabulous in 1946 (or whatever) was completely primitive by today's standards. This movie had not been digitized or upgraded in any way. That did it a disservice.

I was talking to Astrapol because he I believe called the new movies "crap". But I'm glad you do admit the new Disney movies are still pretty good. I suggest seeing The Little Mermaid.

OK I admit "crap" was a bit provocative. In fact I've seen most of these movies and found them OK. But honestly the recent Disney production is pretty bad compared to their older movies, and I maintain that the earliest (40's) are the best. Better animation, much more ambitious esthetics (the scene in Snow white when she rune away in the forest and is attacked by trees is a real masterpiece). Most of all I'm really pissed off by the constant 2d degree and references to adult movies in recent Disney productions.
And just to correct one thing : finding nemo is a Pixar movie, distributed by Disney.
Presently I believe Disney has totally lost his qualitative leadership : Pixar and most of all Japanese studios such as Ghilbi do much, much better.

In my honest opinion. The true classics are the ones Disney controlled. Then there was a period of okay pics, but nothing fantastic, hell in the 80's some were betting disney would quite animation alltogether.
However I enjoyed the films from the 90's. It was a reinvention of the mouse. Little Mermaid through the Lion King most are pretty damn good. My personal favorite of the ones Overdose listed is Aladdin, since I'm a huge Robin Williams fan. After Lion King is when Disney once again jumped the ship, the only thing that they've produced worthwhile since are the Pixar films.
As for the classics. One New Years Eve a long, long time ago, a buddy and I noticed the local theatre was running Pinnochio. So unlike any of the others I got to see it on the big screen. I've never seen it on an HD tv, but seeing the artwork and the mastery like that has endured the film into my heart and brain. Normal television doen't do these films credit.

If one were to take a nationwide poll, I would bet that Aladdin would be the clear winner. It had more mass appeal than any Disney movie before it or since, not counting Pixar films.

Totoro was one of my first anime movies I ever watched I own it on VHS and now on dvd. I love the quality of the Ghilbi movies and love them all. I like how they are being rereleased and buy them as soon as they come out. Disney all be it that they are good, they are loosing their edge and Pixar is taking over on them. Ok this is just my opinion.;)

There was something different about the older movies, something gentler and kinder. Maybe it was the fact that the figures looked more cartoon like or maybe it was the story lines. For great children's entertainment you can't beat Dumbo, probably the best Disney movie ever.

Really? I'd say the Lion King. But seeing that Disney poll, many seemed to like The Little Mermaid and Snow White. Hmmmmm.....
I like rescuers down under. My son loves Toy Story, 1 & 2. I've only seen finding nemo, the little mermaid and lion king out of your list though.
