December 1941 ?
Just taking a guess here.

!941, Sept? As part of the convoy protection program. Several US ships, including a destroyer had already been sunk.

I remember reading about some naval gunner who fired on a mini sub in Pearl Harbour sometime before it was attacked-cant remember the details tho.

Vilepagan
12-10-2007, 07:04 AM
Ok, the answer is Oct. 1941, 3 months before Pearl Harbor was attacked. As Old Timer said, it was in response to the sinking of several US ships in convoy.

Here's a new question:

Where and when did the term "deadline" originate ?
I'm looking for the specific place.

Very good, vile. :)

A new question, please, somebody.
If not, here's one.....

What mentally stable Russian Tsar carried on a flirtation with what English monarch?

rendova
12-11-2007, 06:07 AM
The answer is Ivan the Terrible and Elizabeth Tudor. He sent her furs and jewels and she encouraged him in his gift gifting, but secretly confided to her chief minister, William Cecil, that she'd have to be insane to go live in Russia with a crazy man like Ivan.

A new question from someone, please!

Sorry, this is a game thread I see, now.

Okay: What Longstreet adjutant from S. Carolina went on to command his own brigade?

Btw, I should have said Georgia, not S.Car. Sorry for the confusion; I changed my question in midstride and didn't check post. Easier now? Hope so.

Here's a bonus clue: his last name is the same as a color of horse you might see him on.

I am afraid to hazard a guess, shiloh-- I COULD say Grey, but....

My CW knowledge isn't what it used to be. We used to re-enact back in the day--that is, Bubba did, and I tagged along as a "nurse", but I don't think i've ever heard of this fella.

Maybe OP knows. He's a CW guy who's from Georgia.:)

It's Black Beauty.

Here's a new question--

How many gowns did Elizabeth Tudor have in her closet?
Hint--she had to build a special building to hold them all.

rendova

The answer is 15, ooo dresses.
I can just hear her saying, "But honey, I haven't a THING to wear!"

OK--no more Elizabeth Tudor questions.

Here's an easier one---

How many American ships were sunk at Pearl Harbor?

OldPhart
12-11-2007, 06:29 PM
I'd say 18.

Of those ships, how many were raised and sailed again?

Or 21 based on some other sources... all but three were raised and put back in commission (Arizona, Oklahoma, and I forget the other one).

Utah.

Thanks.

I think there were 6 major ships sank, and that the others were naval vessels (but not really warships) but still considered by some part of the "fleet". That is probably where the various numbers of ships comes from.

You are correct, 21 were sunk OR damaged. (some were in areas that you could not actually sink them anyways... lol). I think only 3 actually "sunk" the others were either capsized or heavily damaged (Utah for example).

Here is a link with even more ship info:

edit: 4 sank... forgot to count the harbor tug (must have gotten in the way of a torpedo)

Who was the first U.S. Presedential candidate to be assassinated and what was his religion?Ah, yes. Clever boy. I think I've got it now. He was not a candidate at the time of the "assassination," right? I had to dig out some old books of mine, and I wasted time searching for atheist candidates first, on a hunch. But it wasn't an atheist. I believe I have it and tried to confirm on the net: It was a cultist!
(Am I right? I don't want to give too much away because I had to look it up. But the question is timely, I think.)

rendova

I've narrowed it down to 2 possibilities, AFT ( I don't google unless I HAVE to, lol)----

Either Huey Long, shot by Dr. Weiss, a Jewish man

Bobby Kennedy, shot by Sirhan Sirhan, a Muslim

I'll say Sirhan.

Here's a question:

What was the REAL reason Burr called out Hamilton?

LOL, true, true,, but remember, those dresses were VERY important to Lizzie, as were her 150 or so wigs, not to mention her jewelry.....

Traveler was the name of Lee's horse. Magnus--don't know. Does anyone know the answer to my Burr/Hamilton duel question?

Traveler was the name of Lee's horse. Magnus--don't know. Does anyone know the answer to my Burr/Hamilton duel question?Alexander Magnus (i.e the Great): Bucephalus.

As to your question, Gore Vidal, in his book Burr, postulated some slur on Burr's daughter by Hamilton. I am not aware of any consensus among historians, though. It has always seemed a bit of a mystery, no?

rendova
12-12-2007, 12:43 PM
That is exactly right.
It must have been a serious slur, for Burr to react like that. I've read that Hamilton said that Burr and Theodosia ( has dau) were, uh, "close."

No wonder Burr didn't fire into the air for that insult.

Here's a new question.

Benjamin Franklin suggested to the Continental Congress that the Continentals use this weapon, instead of guns.

Name the weapon Ben suggested.

PS. Alexander MAGNUS....duh!
Bucephaus= "Ox-head".

1. Yep, that's it. Not a bad idea, either.

2. Sure. It was in a wonderful book I just read--Valley Forge by
Donald Chidsey. He made the time come alive--the book was funny too. I'd recommend it to anyone interested in this time period.

Alan Turing was a gay, British soldier who helped break the Enigma Code. When it was discovered he was gay he committed suicide by eating a poisoned apple. Apple computer uses a half eaten apple as its symbol.

I was friends with Jef Rasking (not close since high school) and he like the majority of the Apple management was very pro gay rights. Turing is also considered by many to be the father of modern computing.
